Tyla, the now Grammy nominated artist from Johannesburg South Africa, has been making a name for herself with her music, most of which she calls 'Popiano': a blend between Amapiano, R&B, and pop. While creating buzz with her singles Getting Late, Overdue, and Been Thinking, Tyla's also been enjoying the viral success of her song Water. Tyla hopes that with her music, she's able to breakout as one of music's best new acts, something she's said doesnt' happen all too often for people where she comes from.

I’m so happy that more and more Africans are getting more global success. I definitely think Tyla is here to stay considering she’s already gonna drop an album right after the success of Water. You can tell she has so much pride and joy in her music and I really hope we see more artists like her gain more traction.

I think what makes Tyla special is the fact she can blend a very new sound into pop and rnb. Also the fact she can really sing. Water is such captivating song because it has a choir aspect to it with the vocal layering which is common in afrobeat. But it makes it spiritual in a way that its low-key a gospel song lol.
Tyla’s sound is specifically amapiano mixed with pop, has nothing to do with afrobeats. Amapiano is South African created and still growing here and afrobeats in west African and South Africans don’t do afrobeats

Specifically the production is Amapiano.

fun fact, BTS also used gqom in their song idol. You'll hear it clearly at the beginning of the song. I think that's why they do the gwara gwara at the chorus because the gwara gwara is also associated with gqom.

I'm not exaggerating when I say Water is THE song of 2023 (and one of the best songs I've heard). Idk how to describe it but when I first heard it, it's like I got an instant crush. Tyla's soothing vocals, the soft lyrics, and the instrumental are so captivating in a romantic way. Every time the explosion hits after "Set off my whole body", it gives me goosebumps. Such a well-written and breathtaking masterpiece.
I didn't realize the song has amapiano influence. I'm still discovering the genre and my favorite from it is Fatela by Aymos & Ami Faku (also a beautiful song).

5:39: Fun Fact: DJ Lag is a South African Gqom producer and originator of the aforementioned genre and happens to be the man behind in infectious and anthem sound of Beyoncé’s MY POWER which happens to be a Gqom song as well. The song features Nija, Tierra Whack, Yemi Alade and fellow South Africans Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly.
Amapiano are not necessarily Afrobeats inspired, but it came from a South African old school dance genre, Kwaito which is why they both tend to be slow because they are inspired from "slowed down house music" from the UK and American Hip-Hop, Jazz and Disco.

I just want to say thank you for mentioning that Tyla doesn’t identify as Black. A lot of people are trying to push her racial identity as just Black, but she’s a mixture of African, South East Asian, and White. Just because she “looks Black or half Black” doesn’t mean that’s her racial identity. I thought people would know this, especially in the U.S.A., but here we are. That being said, I like ‘Water’ a lot. Can’t wait for her debut album😅💯

She's what we call coloured. Trevor Noah has explained that coloured people are their own community. Not necessarily because they're part black and part white. Tyla is coloured but Trevor isn't. Make sense?

It's not about Tyla not identifying as black but that she has a strong identity already as a colored, a South African, and African. She is undeniably all these things that don't need to be further elaborated.

Folks mainly pop music fans love trashing this era of music mainly bc it’s the same as the early 2010s but I much prefer this era bc many artists from niche/underground genres are able to achieve massive success and recognition without the need to dumb down their original sound or cater to a American/western audience. If artists like tyla, bad bunny, Rosalia, Megan thee stallion, flo, and even Billie eilish came out in 2012 as suppose to today they would have change the unique qualities that makes them artists bc making generic EDM pop music was the standard to crossover or they stayed exclusively to their niche market and not get the chance to crossover im here for it, embrace diversity, originality and individuality among niche/underground/international artists coming up, i can’t wait to see what tyla does next
