We'll talk everything from what makes a main pop boy, to current main pop boys like Bruno Mars, the Weeknd, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and others. We'll also talk about the double standards between pop boys and pop girls, as well as some potential Gen Z pop boys like Lil Nas X and Jungkook.

    14:48 I don't want to be boring, but to clarify: jungkook didn't get anything from american artits' fanbase. it was the opposite, those artists got the boost after collabing with jungkook, for example, latto fisrt 1 hot 100 (beside usher, the collab didn't have any differents on both him and and jungkook). jungkook's popularity as a solo artists is a pure achievement and hard work of his&bts fanbase. it's a misconception that other artists' fame helped him in anyway

      Him doing a lot of promotions and working with successful Western pop songwriters and producers were also major factors. If he had put out his own songs with his own Korean lyrics there would have been no major Western mainstream success. The same goes for BTS as a whole, they could fill stadium with their Korean music but not get massive radio play without Dynamite, Butter and My Universe.

    Current pop trends say a LOT about what we think about gender. I am so glad you used clips of stars like Bowie and Prince in the beginning because it perfectly illustrates what I mean. A big reason pop draws us in is the aesthetic element (theatrics, as you said): colorful outfits, dramatic performances, expressive vocals, and these are things that are easier for a mainstream audience to digest in women. In some ways, "gender stereotypes" have become even more stifling and suffocating in recent years. It's interesting to me that Bowie and Prince were popular in their time, whereas Harry Styles was ripped apart for wearing a dress. There is an undeniable gendered element to all of this.

    • @burnt.norton

    • @perfectallycromulent
      @perfectallycromulent Před 2 měsíci +31

      Maybe it's because Styles doesn't look good in a dress. I find that his tattoos just turn into dark blobs from a few feet way, and they make his exposed skin look unattractive and blotchy. Generally speaking, this is a problem with most people's tattoos: they aren't placed in a way that allows them to look attractive from more than a few feet away. Maybe you like what you see when you look in the mirror but most people don't see you that closely.

      while this is true, we can’t forget that people like bowie & prince did face alot of public scrutiny for how they were but i think bc we are inna age of social media everyone can just put their opinions out there for everyone to see, whilst back then it wasn’t like that, yk. + i think also the reason they just grew on us is bc they were just being themselves plus they had the talent & personality to back that up. imo harry doesnt my give me authentic vibes it just feels like he’s tryna be elton john jr or something ! like it’s one thing to be inspired by someone but it’s another when ur tryna be like them so bad that’s all people really think of you as (a wannabe, a replica, etc) & the thing with lil nas x it’s not even so much of the way he is, i feel like it’s bc of the unnecessary antics he does. like not even fun, back in the day artist type antics (like prince with his buttch33ks out lol) he does those types of antics that is just stupid & it shows that u don’t have the talent to stay relevant

    • @sellase12
      @sellase12 Před 2 měsíci +73

      I think the reason why Harry Styles and co are ripped apart for being flamboyant even in today's progressive era, yet Prince and Bowie (at times MJ) were given a pass back in the 80s is bc of the political climate. Back in those days, men in flamboyant clothes were simply seen as quirky artists. But when Harry Styles and Young Thug wore a dress it was seen as agenda-pushing or virtue-signalling.

    Jungkook has really good potential, great debut for a 1st project he had to quickly wrap up before enlisting and not much competition when it comes to all-rounders like this... Even when BTS will resume as a group, they've a pretty healthy relationship and always had the freedom to release solo projects so let's see...Lil Nas X, Troye Sivan already have quite a few years in not sure how much more potential growth they'll have or momentum they could gain... even to a Justin, Harry Styles, or Bruno Mars level...

    you can’t disagree that he ain’t one cuz his song legit reached a billion streams on Spotify in 108 days… and his debut album did better than random albums released by some pop artists from the west…

    He also did well in the bb charts by getting no.1 for seven, no.5 for 3D and Standing Next to You…

    I just hope yall understand why he is called the main pop boy… he is a true fan of pop, you can see from his previous song covers, recommendations in interviews and his karaoke lives too before he debuted solo. He does love pop more but he is also interested in covering his favorite genres and new ones which he said himself in his recording film for seven.
    His recording diary for his album will also release soon and you can then understand how much of a backbone he is to BTS.
    Just here to say he is an amazing artist and his music has always been top notch. Let it be his solo work - his recent release callled “never let go” or his previous releases like his singles and fan songs 🥹!
    You will never be disappointed if you check out his ability to perform. He has always been a born performer and singer… his hard work, passion and dedication is the best thing I’ve ever seen. His attitude towards his work is so positive and inspirational. He loves his Armys so much that he has dedicated and even written many songs for us !
    Don’t forget to check out golden ! A masterpiece for real.
    I will only be happy if he gets recognized for his hard work and talent 💜🫶🏻

    Ok, this opinion is coming from a Cis Het male who loves listening to pop music in any form. Women have dominated pop music since the mid-80s, which is a great thing. Pop was rarely a genre for male musicians to shine in anyway. There could be various reasons for this.
    From my POV, men usually have a lower range in terms of singing. And, in Pop music, high/tenor voices work better. So, men suffer from that. The few male pop artists that are thriving have high/tenor voices.
    If you pay attention to the rock/metal genre, it's usually males who dominate in that space, because it's heavier. And, it suits male voices better. Now, many female artists thrive there as well. However, for the longest time, it's been male artists most of the time. Even the biggest male pop artists in the 80s were rock musicians.
    It's only since the late 90s that more male artists began breaking into that "synth/synthetic beats" driven music genre. Name 10 solo male pop artists that were huge in the 90s. Hard to name.
    It's only since the early 2000s that male pop artists started really taking off, for eg., Usher and Justin Timberlake. That's just how it's been. Most importantly, it's great that women dominate pop music because, in other genres, it has been tougher for them due to sexism and various other reasons.

The fact he basically sacrificed extended solo promotions all to serve his country and for BTS to come back sooner just shows how much he loves being a member of BTS. We don’t have “pop boys” because audiences view artists as either aspirational or objectifiable. Audiences aren’t willing to invest themselves in artists whose work they can’t contextualize within their own limited experiences/scope. Pop girls can be both aspirational AND objectifiable at the same time. Pop boys cannot (anymore).
    Artists who are marketed as aspirational (The Weeknd, Drake, Jack Harlow) do so thru a male lens that indulges a vaguely misogynistic fantasy that is key to mainstream success but functions as a deterrent to the pop base. Which is why most of them aren’t really pop artists but rather rap/hip hop/funk etc artists that occasionally dabble in pop.
    Objectifiable pop boys (Shawn Mendes, Bieber, Jungkook) are heavily marketed to teenage girls (and only teenage girls) and their work tends to be seen as douchy and cringy outside of that target demo. They don’t have longevity because that ‘Hey, girl 😏’ schtick starts looking gross and stupid the closer you get to 40 (Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine).
    For us to get new pop guys who actually dominate, audiences really need to get over themselves and be open to something outside of their own expectations. And that’s not really the climate in pop music right now

    Jungkook definitely a lot of potential. He has released only one album but it he already had 3 huge hits from his solo debut album n he barely promoted it before leaving for the military. He had the looks, the vocals, he can dance and has huge charisma will help him a lot . Also, him making sure that all his promo were live performances and Diana Ross mentioning him and his songs and how she liked SNTY so much is definitely a huge boost and praise for his career. Also usher said he loved SNTY when he heard it and really wanted to be part to it and that’s how the remix with him came about. Jungkook would have been huge if he continued to promote as he didn’t have to enlist till 2028 but I do hope he can continue his solo career when he comes back

    You miss are HEAVILY and I mean HEAVILY downplaying both BTS' and especially Jungkook's popularity. Because let me tell you right now it was Jungkook who helped Jack and Latto not the other way around. Look at the releases that Jack and Latto released after they did Seven and 3D, look at the charting data, the streams, and the views and come back here and try to tell me with a straight face that you seriously think it was Jungkook who got helped and not the other way around. Jack and Latto do NOT and I mean do NOT have as big of popularity or fanbase that Jungkook does and that's not hating that's a fact. Also, let me tell you Standing Next To You was already big before Usher hopped on it, The remix quite literally didn't do anything with how well SNTY was performing chart wise etc. ARMYS literally focused on the remix for like 2 days before just going right back to the original.
    Just to give you an example, Usher's new album titled "COMING HOME" which he added the Standing Next To You Usher remix onto his album, let me show you the difference shall we:
    Standing Next To You Usher Remix- 64M Streams (The original aka NON Usher remix ver. has almost 800 Million btw)
    The other tracks on the album-
    Coming Home- 9M
    Good Good- 55M
    A-Town Girl- 4M
    Cold Blooded- 2M
    Kissing Strangers-18M
    Keep on Dancin'- 2M
    Risk It All-5M
    One of them ones- 2M
    I'm not doing all the songs because I think you get my point now, but all I'm going to say is that Standing Next To You in no way got popular or did well because Usher was on a remix of it. The Standing Next To You Usher remix is the most streamed and VIEWED song on his new album, I think that should tell you enough.
    Like Seven was Latto's first ever #1 on Billboard ever.
    And once again just so you get the point here are the streams of the songs that Latto had AFTER Seven
    Seven- 1.7B (Fastest song in the WORLD to hit 1B streams)
    Releases Latto had after the fact:
    Champagne Shit- 1.6M
    The Grinch Freestyle-1.3M
    Back Outside- 6M
    Can't Get Enough-1.8M
    Sunday Service-13M
    Jungkook just released a song a couple of weeks ago and it already has almost 90M streams and it's not even an actual song it's a fan song that he released for BTS' anniversary, it had no promo, or performances or anything it just got released.
    I'm sorry this is long as hell, but I'm petty as shit and feel the need to prove false claims wrong. Anyway, Jungkook is the Main Pop Boy (I don't care what y'all say, I only listen to the opinions of Diana Ross) and BTS are coming back as a full group next year and anyone w/ a problem (Yes, I see y'all in the comments) cry about it.

      @@crystalsnow1138 I even get pissed off when his golden releases get played on kpop stations. It's in English hence it's not K(orean)-POP. It's rooted in racism because I never saw any artist from a foreign country that makes American pop be labelled as their home country's music. Take rihanna for example. She's from Barbados. Mainstream Pop/Rnb Phenomenon and I've never seen someone say she makes her countrys music. Why? Because it's in English but when jungkook does it, it's labelled as korean pop WHEN IT IS IN ENGLISH . All of this is rooted in racism. About the voice swap stuff you said made me think if an artist like Justin timberlake which made his whole career off of stealing black culture and his sound was mainly rnb. If he was black he would've never been claimed as a pop star because his music was rnb but because he was white they gave him a pass despite him barely making pure pop in his career.

As you said, jungkook gets put into K-pop and the weeknd gets put into R&B. This happens all around too because sza is a multigrammy award winning artist who is mainstream yet she does not get a “main pop girlie” status. She gets labeled as R&B. Yet someone like Olivia Rodrigo, despite being half Filipina (imo she is white passing, she is half white, so I do think this helps her a lot ), makes pop punk music yet she automatically gets called a pop girl.

They all present something and it's great to see them with different aesthetics, it's unfair that sometimes that's not enough for the public but men don't care. Ask them more than just releasing the song, but that will also hurt them in the future because they don't deliver anything more than boring material. Ed Sheera is the perfect example, hugely successful songs and now he is forgotten because he does not transcend beyond the charts, while Dua Lipa, who suffered at the beginning, gave us one of the best eras of 2020s, Future Nostalgia.

Bieber fever was a cultural reset. The ones who come the closest to Justin are Drake & The Weeknd but stil not within the same degree. Justin was not necessarily a consistent chart topper like Rihanna or album dominating artist like Adele back in his peak but he was just so damn popular that it's just unbelievable that somebody were not to know his name.

    Gen X here, just stumbled on your channel and found this discussion interesting. To me in addition to number 1 hits and catchy music (which can be fleeting), I look at the generational pop boys and pop girls who last as making a cultural imprint beyond music. Among your Gen Z list, I view Jungkook as already being the number 1 Pop Boy in Asia and Europe, but not in the US.
    There is baggage - KPOP does have a legacy of cultural appropriation and racism as an industry, and there are ways BTS can be critiqued itself. But, I look at the way Jungkook and BTS seem to be trying to build bridges and overcome this by embracing Black Lives Matter, performing with Usher, and encouraging fans to listen to artists like Alicia Keys. There are obvious barriers for a K-Pop artist; some are not tied to racism (language barriers), but some are (anti-Asian sentiments, which could become rampant again just as they did during COVID-19).
    There are cultural ways in which Jungkook could make a difference and an imprint, together with a potential Korean and Asian wave in pop music that may be coming and has already begun. Jungkook appears likely to speak out in the future. I picture him growing into a type of leadership role, very aware of his sense of responsibility. I'm rooting for all on your list too.

    • @perfectallycromulent
      @perfectallycromulent Před 2 měsíci +1

      Gen X here, when it comes to cultural appropriation African-Americans were taking what they wanted from Asian cultures before KPop existed. Wu-Tang Clan are not Chinese. How many have claimed to be lyrical ninjas, or samurais on the microphones?

    • @billkerns9258
      @billkerns9258 Před 2 měsíci +9

      @@perfectallycromulent Indeed, appropriation of Asian culture happens too; that's far from new; see the writings of Edward Said on Orientalism. I'm not disputing you in the least here. We should stand against both anti-Black and anti-Asian racism and forms of stereotyping, exotification, and fetishization as is so common in the way Asian cultural traditions get appropriated.
      Anti-Asian sentiment (e.g., bigotry) and stereotyping are obstacles to a possible Asian wave in pop music and to Jungkook being the leading male pop voice in the US.
      When I speak of artists as having an imprint, this is part of what I mean, Jungkook can help change perceptions and build bridges. He can address racism in the US, Europe, South Korea, and Asia. Look at the way K Pop fans went after white supremacist websites; that's not only because of Jungkook's anti-racist stand, but Jungkook played a role in terms of influence. It's very noteworthy that many K-Pop fans are increasingly politically aware and vocal. It's also noteworthy to look at both musical and political trends among Gen Z not just in the US, but in S. Korea and other parts of Asia, I find it deeply encouraging to look at a rising generation that appears more progressive and anti-racist than mine. On the topic of Jungkook and K-Pop, I can think of quite a few Asian artists today that address issues of racism, LBGTQ rights and personal dignity, and class-based discrimination. See for instance themes in Namwe's (a Malaysian artist) Stranger in the North.
      The artists that last and are truly generational make an imprint on the views of their fans. They contribute to lasting trends and changes both in music and society. Jungkook has that opportunity, and I think he will do it (but not alone). Thirty years from now, I think we'll look at Jungkook's career as one that made a difference. And not just because of some catchy songs.
      The reason I picture a coming "Asian wave" or "S. Korean wave," at the very least, is because of the quality of the artists that are around now and upcoming. Groups like BTS, Twice, and Black Pink are paving the way, and there is another wave coming of brilliant young artists.

    I think part of the issue is that now people seem to consider "pop music" to be "the music that's most popular." But people like Bowie and Prince, used as examples here, weren't considered pop music in their day. They were rock or r&b, or just Bowie and Prince, singular entities. But the main point is: in the past, music by men was very rarely called "pop." You had to be an a boyband full of white boys to get called pop. The term was mostly code for "a white woman is singing this song" for a long time. If you were a white woman and didn't want that label, like the Go-Gos or Bangles wanting to be considered rock bands, you had to fight it with your music, looks, and interviews, and even then, good luck to you.

    My favorite male pop artists are Harry Styles, Conan Gray, Shawn Mendes and 5sos (if you want to count them, I will here). I don’t think Shawn was ever cut out for pop stardom, so I’m kind of hoping he goes back to making music soon and it doesn’t have the same generic obvious radio hits he used to put out every year or so. I hope he just makes the more acoustic music he’s always seemed more inclined to. As for becoming a main pop boy, I think Conan Gray could do it. His newest album definitely has a crafted aesthetic that lends itself well to an “era”. I think his music could appeal to a more mainstream audience, and I think he’s already had some viral success on some of his first album songs. I think Luke Hemmings of 5sos has the image, but I don’t think his music has a mainstream enough appeal. And I wouldn’t want him to blow up individually bc I don’t want 5sos to permanently split up.

    Hey Naomi, love your videos.
    I think one of the biggest reason why we don't have any big male popstars right now is because male artists fan bases are not that active on stan Twitter or in the pop scene.
    I am not speaking about all of them, there are obviously exceptions (most notably Harry Styles, Omar Apollo and Troye Sivan for obvious reasons) but I think due to the shift in how the music industry sells music right now in the pop scene. It has become difficult for men to market based on "relatability" to pop audience which is mostly girls and gays.
    I do miss male popstars especially those from the early 2000s or the 90s. Maybe tiktok can change the scene as male artist doing viral dances n pop gimmicks will gain more traction but time will tell. (Sorry for bad English, I am not native speaker)
