    Special shoutout to two artists I discovered in 2013: the first one is Lorde. "Pure Heroine" man. I was an angsty teen and that album made me feel SEEN. Lorde's impact in the 2010's can be palpable even now with many artists that came after her (and of course "Melodrama" is a masterpiece). Also, shoutout to Haim for "Days are gone"; that albums still slaps, especially the first half and it's been amazing following their musical growth. In conclusion, both were many of those first albums that I listened in full; they definitely changed my surface level approach to current music and how I love a good put project, wether a full album or EP.

    I also think that 2013 brought up the conversation of cultural appropriation into the mainstream. It has always been around but I think some antics done by Miley, Katy, Iggy and Robin Thicke, the movie “Spring Breakers”, twitter and Tumblr made it easier for many people to call out things in pop music more critically. I don’t know if anyone agrees.

    • @naomi.cannibal
      @naomi.cannibal  Před rokem +4

      You’re right! And I think that really hurt some artists like Katy who weren’t “ahead of the curve” and had a lot of past work that could be used against them, even recent stuff on Prism. So I think with Witness she felt extra compelled to lean in and “be on the right side of history” which confused the album a bit, bc Katy had never been the girl we were checking for for conscious pop. But that’s just my lil essay 🤷🏾‍♀️ lmaoo

The fandom wars on twitter and tumblr were crazyyy. I have flashbacks now whenever I see fandom debates for kpop groups because these are the same type of bickering we used to have for western(especially american) pop music when we were kids. I think later on the rise of Halsey and Melanie Martinez (I was fan of them too lol) changed the game and started this alternative female music era. And not gonna talk about trap stuff I was never interested in hip hop so never did follow that section.

    Do you ever think that it's interesting how there was this whole subset of western pop music which had this eclectic alternative vintage vibe to it back in 2009-2014?
    At the time, a lot of major artists who could also be classified as alternative or alternative leaning, essentially shared the same core ideas behind their sound, like some kind of a vintage sound for instance.
    Examples would be
    Lady Gaga Born This Way - a very diverse record, mainly comprised of electro/synth/techno pop, which was obviously "retro" influenced in its sound, referencing a lot of music and artists from 80s and 90s in its sound (Marry the Night being inspired by queen of the night by Whitney, or you and i sampling Queen) and overall sounded very "vintage" and analogue.
    Lana Del Rey Born to Die, which was again, all about the classic 1950s, vintage vibe, visuals, sound merged with lo-fi/analogue sounding beats and soundscapes.
    Florence + the Machine Ceremonials, which was, again, very heavy on strings, lo fi synths and vintage/antique inspiration.
    Lykke Li's Wounded Rhymes, which is yet again very very lo fi, dark, moody.
    All of the aforementioned albums are dark, energetic, done by female artists, all of them heavily feature some sort of retro/vintage/antique aspect in their sound, usually from somewhere within the second half of the 20th century, all of them were alternative in their sound and also had a very "lo fi" quality to their synths and any of the artificial elements, like beats and so on.
    It's just really interesting how they all seem to share a lot of similar qualities and they all came out within 1-2 years from each other, but nobody really talks about it.

    great video as always! 2013 was a year i often revisit and recall fondly. now, come to think of it i now see newjeans’ recent release as a culmination/embodiment/nutshell of points you mentioned, most especially about k-pop’s gradual foray into the west, song lengths getting shorter to garner virality and streams, every song having a music video with some kind of incentive to get people watching them, and dropping content almost out of nowhere (this has been the case with their debut era), and minimal/repetitive or simple lyrics. and though contentious and may have been a thing for decades but feels more accelerated nowadays, i might even add to this the prevalence of artists getting into the spotlight below 18 years old - lorde was 16 when royals put her in the spotlight, and now we have billie, olivia, and nj.
