  • ...WTVJ-4 Showed Viewers How TV Shows Were Distributed
This 1952 story offered WTVJ-4 viewers a glimpse behind the station's scenes without entering its Miami Avenue studio, tracing the progress of TV shows -- recorded on film as kinescopes -- from Miami International Airport to Channel 4.
Before satellites live TV shows were almost entirely local, as there was no means to transmit them. Instead, programs were recorded and shipped by air express to local stations as seen in this story.
This coverage aired during a time of transition, as WTVJ was connected to New York City -- and network television -- in 1952. WTVJ became a CBS affiliate and kinescopes were phased out as network shows came to Miami by cable. The advent of satellites years later expanded TV stations' access to programming exponentially.
