  • Three WTVJ-4 news stories from 1957 capture the consumer-centered 1950s.
    1. A "Pioneer's Dinner" at Burdines on Flagler Street salutes Miami long-timers. This story gives us a good look at the store's restaurant, the Hibiscus Tea Room.
    2. Shoopers at a Miami -area Sear's store are enthralled by a "Searsnik" balloon -- evidently inspired by Sputnik, the Soviet satellite launched that year.
    3. The Florida Marine Aquarium Association's All-Marine aquarium show sparks interest with its exhibits, notably of "invisible fish."

That is the old Burdines department store in Downtown Miami in 1957. The first clip shows the original Royal Palm restaurant where I worked in the mid 1990s until December of 2006.
