I think Penny Mordant's speech had pauses for applause and nobody applauded until the end when they were probably thankful it was over.
The "Liz Truss Dunning Kruger pause"
At least she is allowed to speak unlike Rosie Duffield.
I can only listen until 1030 every morning. It's awesome watching the Whole show when I get home. ❤❤
You are indoctrinated
Thank you Mrs O’Brien.👌

Penny's speech reminds me of when Joey wrote his speech to officiate Monica and Chandler's wedding.
Can imagine in a few years a 79 year old hanging round outside an off licence asking an 80 year old going in to buy them a pack of cigarettes because they are too young!
😂
If smoking gets banned....then alcohol should be banned too ... no freedom for anyone, then
Ban obesity, as well...
Alcohol and obesity are far more costly and dangerous than smoking annually, but people are too smooth brained to use their thinking caps and understand its the slow degradation of our rights, not to help public health.
This rings of 1920s usa with prohibition. Home stills etc. How can u agree with this? It is just the foot bein g pushed further into the door to turn us even more into a police/facist state.
Ban the SNP!
Ban fascism, bigotry and hate too.....oh, did I go too far?
I guess we can deduce that Sunak doesn’t have any friends in the tobacco industry.
Or any family invested in it.

Wow, as a black market scalper myself I can see the opportunity being created. Thanks Richie!
That "Stan up and fight" bit was like a scene out of "The thick of it".
Christ, I think I’ll take up smoking if the torys hate it😅
Torys hate Christ to
I hate smoking, I hate the smell, I hate what it does to people, I have never smoked in my life, but I disagree with the complete ban.
Any drug, tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and others should be legal to buy, possess, and consume in private. Ban public use, ban operating cars and machines under the influence, regulate ingredients to minimise risk, ban sale to under-18s and tax it highly, ideally ringfacing the money for recovery and healthcare. But in my opinion, adults should have the freedom to do whatever they want to their bodies as long as it doesn't harm others.
With respect, it does actively harm others by putting the NHS under massive burden. Not saying I agree with the ban, I don't have the answers. But to say it doesn't harm other people is slightly disingenuous.
Secondhand smoke is harmful to others. Also, non-smokers will have to pay the medical bills of a smoker when they likely develop cancer or emphysema. Freedom is not free (of consequences).
@@PH5221 so does driving cars, doing sports and 100s of other activities, we would have to be in constant lockdown to let NHS recover with the current level of funding it is getting.
Tax tobacco and other drugs highly; fewer people will use them, and the more someone does, the more tax they paid to cover their treatment...
In my work we see 3 max fax major operations per week (removing a tumour from the mouth/face and harvesting tissue from the arm or leg to plug in the gap). We have at least 10 thrombectomies (removing a clot from the brain) and 15 coiling procedures (preventing a brain aneurysm from bleeding) per week.
No exaggeration- all these patients are smokers/ex long term smokers.
Each procedure takes up theatre time, and there's the cost of paying for surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and healthcare assistants. These patients take up hospital beds sometimes for months.
That's just for neuro (our hospital will be dealing with heart and lung patients as well) and for one hospital in the city. Think how many patients are operated on UK wide.
You simply can't say smoking doesn't hurt anyone else when it puts the NHS under such pressure
It was even more bizarre with Mordaunt's weird pointing gestures. All I could think of was Kenny Everett wearing the big hands.
A total gimmicky method to distract from government failure.
I've never been a smoker. But i wouldn't stop anyone from smoking if they want to. But this isn't about smoking at all
No ? 🤔
Yh unfortunately we bear the cost of people’s personal health decisions such as smoking in a country with a public health system.
Are you OK with speed limits or think people that want to drive fast should not be penalized for doing so?
I'd love to know what you think it is about but I'm assuming it's deeply ridiculous.
And if smoking was say, scrapbooking (something which I personally loathe), yes not the role of government to interfere. But smoking isn't a neutral act. Businesses are making money off of slowly poisoning their customers with an addictive product. If you tried to start selling a new product with the same risks as cigarettes there's no chance it would be allowed. And if that wasn't enough the NHS then has to look after all the smokers which directly impacts you and everyone else.
@@NnamdiNwtell that to all the overweight and obese people who cost the NHS far more per year than smokers. I know so many fat people bro, most of the guys In my work are overweight and complain about health issues all the time.
Maybe Penny Mordaunt never learned how to move onto the next line when reading?
On the smoking ban all I can see is them absolutely being completely unable to enforce it. It would probably cost more to implement than what it is costing the NHS currently. Plus creating a new illegal market for cigarette (which never existed before) - like 1920s america but instead of alcohol it will tabs
there's always an illegal market for tobacco, has been since forever
If tobacco was any type of real drug I would agree with you. But it doesn't compare to actual drugs, people will just vape. It's not like you would be making illegal all forms of the drug so if you *really* want it you will just do that. Cigarettes are just not desirable to kids the way drugs are.
Fade it out by increasing age limit by 4 years every year. I'm sure there illegal market for every illegal product, doesn't mean they shouldn't remain banned ffs :D
In Ireland the smoking ban was the best decision that Michael Martin, the current tanaiste ever made as health minister. Ever made. And it was a total indoor ban. No exemptions. Pubs, clubs, hotels and all indoor premises are now smoke free. In Ireland. There are outdoor Ash trays. I am no fan of rishi sunak. But this is the right call. Every year in the Irish budget they increase the price of ciggies and will again next week in thd Irish budget on October 10th
@@markdaly1648 That's not anything special. Most Western countries have banned smoking indoors at public places and workplaces.
It's the way her voice rises for that last 'FIGHT'. It doesn't rouse because it sounds thin and lost in a silence which should be applause
It's not just the dopamine, the draw, the feeling of the puffs, the coffee with it, the smell, it's my freedom to enjoy these things
and my 'freedom' to choose not to pay for your health bill
I believe the tax smokers pay on smoking products probably pay for their health care.
@@middleman9183 do you drive a car? that kills people too and we all have to pay for 4 it
@@r2b279 that's a silly comparison
@@middleman9183 1.It's a fact 2.silly? that's an opinion 3.are we now banning McDonald's too? where do we draw the line?
Im all for banning cigis but the main issue is where would the government get the 10 billion in tax revenue that it would lose over time.
I was thinking about this point; I suppose cannabis could fill the tax void. There are proven health benefits to consuming cannabis, unlike smoking tobacco, which causes a myriad of health problems.
The simple answer to that is "somewhere else". The government won't ever go short, there are plenty of other pockets they can rummage through.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the mug at 18:54
Penny Mordant 😂😂 Reminds me of a skit from A bit of Fry and Laurie..
Sorry this has been going on forever,Novada Media and Owen Jones have been shouting the rent thing from the hill tops for so long can't believe your only just seeing this now,fun fact (not) according to channel 4 London borough councils are actually moving people in hotels that are homeless to the north, the rents are a fraction of the cost,if the refuse they are on the streets, how mad is this i rent a 3 bedroom witha loft conversion for £425 a month, what would you pay in london for the same property
I could see an influx in young southerners moving up north because the housing prices down south are outrageous
Since when has prohibiting vices ever contributed positively to the problems surrounding the vice? Everyone loves it when the market provides a solution and (in the UK at least) vaping provides an opportunity for the near total displacement of smoking. When cannabis is ultimately (and sensibly) legalised, are we going to try and ban the smoking of it?
Well, it's already the case. You can get LEGAL cannabis via private prescription, but you aren't legally able to SMOKE it. Only vaping, edibles etc allowed
Penny’s speech was just so wholesome 😂😂😂😂…. Ahhh, this country! 😂
Funny how the libertarians are now telling people what to do. What happened to Freedom?
As a progressive Pirate, I have never been a fan of libertarians. Many only believe in freedoms they agree with, whereas I believe in having government protect individual rights, property, the environment, while not interfering with personal rights and choices. One can do what they want, as long as no one else is hurt, the environment isn't harmed, or property of others is harmed. This means drinking, drug use, consensual prostitution and other vices are not a matter for the government to ban, just regulate...
@@stevemcgowen So you want regulation ;)
Absolutely. I don't believe in anarchy. Regulations concerning ingredients list, age restrictions until one is the age of emancipation. Why wouldn't someone want some regulations? Have you seen Somalia- which has no regulations of any kind? @@SimplySketchyGT

That "Stand Up and Fight" speech is demented.
There is effectively a ban on sugar, it’s nearly impossible to find soft drinks and juices that are not artificially sweetened now. It all just one little step at a time until virtually everything that’s enjoyable but slightly dangerous is banned in the name of safety. James I just love seeing you on CZcams.
That Penny Mordaunt speech sounds like something Nicola Murray would deliver in "the thick of it". Maybe she lost the last page of the speech and started making stuff up.
As Allen Carr put it so beautifully, the pleasure gained from smoking a cigarette is exactly the same as that gained from removing too tight shoes. Anything which can help people give up the awful habit should be very much encouraged.
Well said
Just let adults make there own choices and do what they want. Put a pack of cigarettes back to £2 and stop rinsing people's money. I choose not to smoke, simple as that.
"...and once Earth's population stands up and fight, neighbouring alien civilisations will stand up and fight, and once they stand up and fight, the next galaxy's civilisations will stand up and fight [...] and when our universe has stood up and fights, parallel universes will stand up and fight!"
1 July 1937 was when 999 was implimented in London.
Hi James. An answer for you. The French have a kind of slang called Verlan which rather than using rhyming words, swaps syllables around. It's the French equivalent of rhyming slang, but the last syllable becomes the first. So the name 'VERLAN' (pronounced as it looks Ver-lan) is itself an example as it's the other way around (l'invers) of the word l'invers (pronounced Lan-ver) Corrupt cops are known as Les Ripoux (ree-poo) (the title of a famous French film) which is the other way around of pourri, (poo-ree) meaning rotten. It's quite fun.
How about side effects of being a smoker not being covered by the NHS??
I am an american. I am a smoker for 40 years and i wish america had banned it years ago.
Similar to how prohibition, making drugs illegal, and gambling bans worked in America. Lets not forget making gun crimes illegal. All of those bans worked, no?
@@stevemcgowen as someone who smokes and lost my grandfather to lung cancer, sometimes people need to be protected from themselves.

So glad I was born in '68. Don't currently smoke. Used to. Glad I've still got the option...
Not sure who that Labour politician was, who spoke of the pleasure of smoking, but I suspect that (as with a lot of the older generation of Labour politicians) there’s a bit of having read Marx behind the remark: “Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the of the people”. With the obvious double meaning that it soothes ills, and also stifles critique. Same surely applies to the consolations of a cigarette…
And energy is reserved to Westminster

Woke ageism? 🤔
They just made smoking way more exciting for 14 year olds. It’s gone from being something old people do, to something illegal, rebellious.
I am a smoker and I think it's a great decision. In fact it's the only thing a tory has ever done that would be agreeable with me.

The Tufton Street think tanks, funded by the tobacco industry won't allow any ban on cigarette smoking!!

Ok James time to speak on the whole of the U.K., in Scotland the Tory’s work hand in glove with Labour, the Tory’s for the first time got into Scotland’s councils because Labour went into coalition with them !! this need to be addressed
They will then complain that we need more austere because the tobacco tax revenue has gone down. Notice that it will not take effect for years. That way they will be gone from office or switch it back again before it takes effect. What is not to like? That they are not doing it now.

I think the Jay walking example was pretty bad considering it was a lobbying tactic used by the automotive industry to demonise pedestrians and prioritise car centric cities/towns.
So that joke you cracked about milk and two sugars in your mug was simply that. I've been stressing about your giant mug having eight sugars in it.
surely banning smoking in public would be a better way to control it's proliferation. Mind you within the apartment my mother used to live in in Sydney (australia) it was illegal to smoke! I thought that was a bit OTT - you should be able to do what you like within your home as long as noone around you (i.e. children and other vulnerable people) was harmed.
As long as they ban smoking and alcohol and all exhaust fumes at the same time I have no issues.
