As far back the story goes Monica, Rachel and Ross, Chandler were friends all these time. Considering Ross is older than Monica and Chandler was classmate of Ross, it's a pretty accurate guess that Chandler and Ross might know each other even before Monica met Rachel.
Anyway, Monica and Rachael stopped talking to each other for quite a long time until the pilot episode of the show.

Ross went to college and met Chandler, proof being that the Gellers first met him during Thanksgiving after Ross started college. Doesn’t matter too much but yeah Rachel and Monica are the oldest friendship whilst the next oldest is Ross and Chandler.

I say this all the time: one of the reasons this show works is because it's hilarious to see what happens when you pair any two of them up because they're all so different! And for Ross and Chandler, I really dig that Chandler will always be Ross' best friend, but Chandler's best friend is actually Joey. It makes the dynamic between the guys so funny!
