JRT I agree that I also played it too quickly. I just beat the game having bought it and installed yesterday morning. I played through the game way too quickly and just wanted to it end by the Prison shooting. I definitely would’ve liked the ending more if I hadn’t been hellbent on beating it. I loved the game but I burnt myself out too quick.

It ain't like in Mafia II, where we see a Tommy that seems weak and hasn't passed through what Tommy really passed. He accepted that someday was going to get killed after what Sam said to him. He knew that since the day he entered on the family his life had changed forever and every act will have some consequences that he had to face, and he did.

I honestly don’t think he died. He got shot in the chest, not the head. And if u remember earlier in the game Paulie shot a guy in the chest thinking he killed him but he was alive. And then the recurring saying Sarielli would say and the guys would follow going forward was 2 in the head. This makes me believe Tommy didn’t die. But what do I know. I just like conspiracies

I actually found this ending a lot better. In the original one, when Vito and Joe approach Tommy in the original game and in Mafia 2 the same happens, Vito calls him "Mr.Angelo" which giving the fact that he had changed his identity should have startled him immediately. But it wasn´t the case. In this remake, I love how he throws the hose to the ground, like giving up, showing that when he heard VIto say "Mr.Angelo" he instantly knew what was going to happen. Nothing, a little detail that I loved from this ending.

The comparison between these two :
Tommy atleast had a family as a gift for joining the mafia. From a cab driver to the most fearful made-men of Salieri. The luck said he can't refuse. So he joined and want too much from it. But atleast he still has a family got his back for him after thing is not as it seems and has a long time enough to see his loved one.
But Vito, he absolute lost everything after joining them. He do everything it takes to get big but it's not enough for him. Ended up being a pawn. Being used by the Clemente and ended up in the hellhole. His mother died without saying a goodbye, his sister dumped him after protecting her from abusive husband. The Irish made his life a living hell when they burned down his house he dreamed to be made. Got somehow backstabbed by the informant he pretended as a close friend when he first met. And never know what happened to his father. He still has Joe at his family until Leo said he wasn't part of the deal. The ultimate price had to be paid if he want to still breathing. He never get what he wanted. When all is not enough for him, he risked it too much and ended up losing it. Including his family, Joe.

The moment he heard his real name, he accepted he dropped the hose and accepted his death. After being shot, he assured his family that now that Salieri got his revenge, they are finally safe. Back in the day, the Mafia generally went only after the culprit and not after the family. Same here: in order for Sarah and her children to be safe, Tommy had to die.

Mafia 1's original ending narrative after Joe shoots Tommy, when the original Mafia game came out in 2002.
"You know, the world isn't run by the laws written on paper. It's run by people. Some according to laws, others not. It depends on each individual how his world will be, how he makes it. And you also need a whole lot of luck, so that somebody else doesn't make your life hell. And it ain't as simple as they tell you in grade school. But it is good to have strong values and to maintain them. In marriage, in crime, in war, always and everywhere. I messed up. So did Paulie and Sam. We wanted a better life, but in the end we were a lot worse off than most other people. You know, I think it's important to keep a balance in things. Yeah, balance, that's the right word. Because the guy who wants too much risks losing absolutely everything. Of course, the guy who wants too little from life, might not get anything at all."

      Mafia did this much better.
In Mafia 1 Tommy was killed by two unnamed thugs. In Mafia 2, it is revealed (or retconned) that Vito and Joe where the ones who killed Tommy.
It all came down to the pacing of it. People who played Mafia 1 knows Tommy died in the ending. It is shocking, but when the second game came around fans were used to it. Mafia 2 had us getting to know and understand Vito as a character and enjoy his story. The big twist of him and Joe killing Tommy comes up near the end of the game while Abby killing Joe comes out of nowhere in the first few hours. Instead of a "Are you fucking serious?!" kind of reaction, it's more of a "Holy shit! That all makes sense now!"
The execution, pardon the pun, was much more respectful as well. Abby draw out the scene as long as possible, making the audience despise her despite the writers wanting players to invest in her while Vito and Joe made it quick with a shotgun blast to the chest, in a sort of "sorry, nothing personal, this is just business" to fit in with the Mafia setting.
