What is the role of dalfampridine (Ampyra) in multiple sclerosis patients? We asked four clinicians to comment: Brian Weinshenker, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; Neil Lava, MD, of Emory University in Atlanta; Andrew Goodman, MD, of the University of Rochester's Multiple Sclerosis Center; and Lana Zhovtis Ryerson, MD, of NYU Langone Medical Center's Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center in New York City. The drug boosts walking ability in some patients, our panel agreed; trying it for a few weeks will identify those who respond without marked adverse effects.

Frampridine really helped wth my walking. It also seemed to help with other things: For awhile, I was able to play the piano. My MS has deteriorated over the years so y wlking still has grown worse. However I still notice when I have missed a dose -things get really bad.
The problem for me is the twelve hour spacing. I have told that I am to take it an hour before I eat or two hours after. Then there is the laxative which has the same restriction plus the other medication. My life is run by the clock! I forget one thing or another or am busy so about once a week a miss a dose of the Fampridine.
The other is that, here in Canada, it is very expensive. Fortunately, while I was on Long Term Disability, my insurance covered 85%. Now that I am over 65 years, the manufacturer, BioGen, generouslyprovides it to me. I am very, very grateful.
