Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower Review

  • This is a review of the Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower. I am migrating over from an electric push mower to this mower. The storage requirements are less than a rotary mower, and noise is almost a non-issue. What is excellent about this mower is that it requires about the same effort to push a rotary mower.
    The cutting action is less damaging to the grass blades.

    Works great! czcams.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

    I have had several models of reel mowers. The Fiskars is a keeper. Nearly silent, no oil, gas, fumes or environmental issues. Pushes easily for a reel mower. Made sturdy. Great machine.

    Thank you for posting this. I learned a couple of things about my Fiskar that I didn't know. I have mine set at 4"-the idea being that the taller grass shades many weeds that grow closer to the ground, so they don't get the sun that they need to thrive. . Also, I just learned that the root system of most lawn grasses mirrors the height above ground, so you get a deeper root system. I hope that is helpful, as your video was helpful to me.

    thanks for making the video. My gas powered just broke after 12-14 yrs of service. I'm thinking go to the manual so I can cut 8am & not be rude to the neighbors. The cheaper versions are often difficult so we tend to buy gas or electric. I may go with this model since its easier to push than other manuals, and no more gas & oil maintenance.

    I've really been enjoying my Fiskars this year. I picked it up used for only $50. It's the older style with the black plastic front wheels, but it functions just fine. My mowable yard is just over 5600 sq/ft. and I works perfectly, and the difference in completion time from my gas mower is negligible. I do find the Fiskars much more enjoyable to use, however. There's something to be said about the ability to just grab the mower and go! And I agree, the end result is a healthier lawn.

    Really interesting, thanks for the upload. I love the direction you're going in with the motivation to grow a healthier lawn. I was wondering, you mentioned about the crabgrass at the end, aside from that, and other grasses that are obviously weeds, would you introduce multiple species of grass into your lawn and grow a kind of 'ecology of grasses'? I wonder if maybe that's the healthiest kind of lawn, almost like a little forest :)

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 3 lety

      Crabgrass has been an issue because of my contamination from a neighbor. Tenacity is a great product to get rid of crab grass. Plant grass seed in the fall. Grass gets a lot of rain and cool weather to set root.

    Quick question. Is there a way to disengage the cutting wheel when pushing the mower? There might be times when I need to push the mower from point A to point B without cutting, so being able to engage/disengage the cutting wheel might be handy.

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 3 lety

      Yes. Lean back on the mower and roll it on two wheels. The blades will spin but not cut. If you roll backwards the blades do not spin.

    Good review. Fiskars website mentions a “one-touch handle height adjustment”. I’m short so it would be good to know how much lower that handle could come down. Also, how does it handle wet grass? It rains here a lot and cannot always wait for the grass to dry. Thanks.

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 3 lety +1

      AC 67
      There is plenty of adjustment for the handle for different heights.
      I cut my grass often when it is damp or wet. I live in the Pacific Northwest. If the grass sticks up in the air it can be trimmed. If the grass is extremely wet and leaning over you may have to trim it more than one time.

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 5 lety +5

      Not really. I ran over some fir tree branches (small) and it cut them. A large enough twig will stop it. I highly recommend a walkthrough for rocks and branches. Thankfully, if you hit a rock, it will not fling it into someone.

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 4 lety

      Catherine Butler
      It cut weeds perfectly fine. If they are too tall it will not cut anything. Personally I pull all the weeds. I don’t have a weed issue in my yard.
      I’m not sure about back pain. I know that exercise helps.

    • @lola2837

      Clarification: It will cut weeds if they are the right height. It is best to pull them before you mow. That is what I do. After I am finished, I pull any weeds that I missed.

    I'm looking into a Reel mower so I can get my Bermuda grass very very low and keep it green, but let me ask you how often do you need to sharpen these blades? What's the cost and who does that service? Thank you

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  Před 2 lety +1

      I have never sharpened them. A kit is available in case they do need to be sharpened but it is extremely rare that you will need to sharpen them. Others may have different experiences based on how they maintain the lawnmower. For example trying to cut twigs or leaving the mower in a wet location where rust develops will dull the blades.
