  • If there's any game in the Halo series that's deserving of a sequel, it's ODST. In today's video, I theorise what a potential ODST sequel would look and play like and how it could benefit Halo Infinite's 10 year content plan as Campaign DLC. Though this time, I'm not dropping in alone...

      How about a game called halo infinite: odst?
      In old tradition you play an odst while chief is MIA. Landing on zeta halo and explore what happened immediately after the infinite got destroyed.
      Edit: well, I almost had the same idea only by thinking about a second entry in the odst series.
      Edit2:
      I have 2 several ideas for the story itself.
      1. Instead of switching team members like in the first odst you switch odst squads. Same idea but a newer touch on it.
      2. The suggestion which is easier to have a good story of: meet other odst squads on zeta halo and lose many of them. I mean... This is a battle between weak humans and brute force aliens. This would be a recall to the tragedy of halo reach or the weak and lonely atmosphere of halo 3 odst.
      In short. Escape atriox, get down to the ring and meet up with your fireteam. Find lasky and safe him against all odds. And during this journey see the unsc losing the war. Have those epic firefight infinite failed to bring to us. Make us see the losses of the unsc and maybe have a mysterious twist in your backhand. I mean. We are on a halo ring. There must be something we didn't expect.

    I've always had this dream as well of getting another odst spinoff but in my case I always wondered what happened to the crew of the In Amber Clad after the library incursion in Halo 2.
    It could fit a horror type story too very well since you would start in the quarintine zone a few minutes before the arbiter and company show up.
    After dealing with heavy loses against the flood you would retreat to the ship were it Is being overrun by the parasite, and while trying to get to the bridge in order to destroy the nav data the ship would enter into slipspace and crash into High Charity.
    Waking up after said crash and exiting the doomed ship you would found yourself trapped in High Charity now pitch black with flood running everywhere and the small remnants of covenants slowly losing ground against the parasite.
    Maybe Cortana would guide you deep down into the city streets while avoiding dangers trying to find a safe haven or a way to get out of there.
    In your way you could even find civilian covies and could either help them or ignore them, with the first option prompting some elites to help you back and increasing your odds of survival.

      Would LOOOOOVE a horror centric halo game. Games like dead space and outlast are some of my favorites of all time and I think that feeling of hopelessness and desperation to survive would be amazing in halo; a series where we’ve grown accustomed to being a one man killing machine charging head first into battle

  • @alexfrost2799
    @alexfrost2799 Před 2 lety +83

    Good stuff overall. Honestly, if they were going to make ODST 2 set in Infinite, I think they'd have to some pretty distinct gameplay changes to make the player REALLY feel like a regular human. The nerfs in the original ODST weren't enough. You were effectively Spartan-lite instead of an unaugmented human.
    About the squad mechanic, I'm under the impression that the reason why it didn't work in 5 was because, compared to Republic Commando, Halo is a much more complicated and dynamic game. Mobility in Halo is way higher and enemies react a little more dynamically.

    • @LaperLarden
      @LaperLarden  Před 2 lety +22

      Absolutely. I glossed over it in this video, but the opening mission where you're running from Atriox and chilling with the Spartans would help to set up the size difference. They'd likely have to change things like fall damage, maybe slow down the clamber mechanic and make sprint a limited thing again.

    • @Nefnoj
      @Nefnoj Před 2 lety +8

      This is a super unpopular opinion, but I don't actually agree with idea of dumbing down ODSTs so drastically. The cool thing about the Spartan-lite design is that it fits the Halo dynamic and calls back to the limitations of Combat Evolved, I like that old gameplay preservation in a modern engine, having a weak punch, a need for medicine, and being a foot shorter is good enough for me. A lot of popular ideas seem to restructure ODSTs to feel like a non-Halo game.
      Then again, maybe that's the point of a spin-off, Halo Wars is a blast and it's a completely different genre. Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike games weren't bad either so long as you ignored the grind. There is probably a ton they could do to make it stand out from a traditional Halo and still be a great shooter.

  • @Will_Forge
    @Will_Forge Před 2 lety +20

    My Addition: at 11:00 I think it would be amazing to have Roland leave a fragment behind to help remaining UNSC forces on the Infinity. He helps guide you through the ship while escaping Atriox by giving you direct "turn left up ahead right... NOW!" And if you fail to make that turn fast enough the pathway is destroyed forcing you to take a more dangerous path instead that he has to unlock for you. "Okay, there's another rout, but I can't promise you'll like it. I was keeping some of the Banished caged up in there. Blast doors opening now..." With this kind of run and gun design you won't have to, for example, stop to pause the game for a map but will always have a good idea where to go next, and Roland can even provide waypoints on your HUD.

    • @witherwolf3316
      @witherwolf3316 Před rokem

      The idea is great, but the biggest problem is the gameplay. Generally, you are never running _away_ from anything in Halo, you're always running _towards_ something. Players would be very, very confused and upset when they try to kill Atriox by shooting him and then finding out that they can't and they *have* to run away. It's the unkillable boss problem. If a player is allowed to fight a boss, they should be able to kill it. The only way you could implement this would be as a cutscene, unfortunately.

Or choose to land on top of a tall building to snipe from. Or land far off to remain undetected and try to stealth your way. Not incorporating the drop into the gameplay of a game about Orbital Drop Shock Troopers seemed like such a missed opportunity.

    This is exactly the sort of thing I was expecting from 343 when they announced Infinite's "10-year plan" - regularly released DLC campaigns from the viewpoints of interesting characters. I love your proposal for one of these to be ODST-themed, because I too think a spiritual sequel would be very effective. I really like Wernissage's character designs and the backstories you made for them, and we desperately need to be able to explore different biomes on Zeta Halo, like what was shown in Infinite's reveal trailer.
    I also love the idea of featuring a customisable ODST character for the player who has a central role in the story (akin to Noble Six). Obviously you'd have to record appropriate versions of dialogue so it would be a fair bit of work, but would have the payoff of excellent immersion.
    A couple of things of note are the campaign's opening on the Infinity - why does Lance choose to stay and stall Atriox so that Fireteam Scarlet can escape? There needs to be a reason, either character-based or situational, for Lance to do that. Also, why would Atriox suddenly start chasing Lance, a lone ODST, in the middle of a huge battle? Surely Lance wouldn't be his primary target.
    Perhaps two birds could be killed with one stone here (sorry PETA). Maybe Dr Halsey has tasked Fireteam Scarlet with safeguarding a Macguffin (artifact, weapon, etc.) and to draw the Banished attention, Lance takes the Macguffin and runs to a drop pod, planning to regroup with Scarlet on the surface of Zeta Halo. As @SteadySamurai117 suggested, Lance could then be chased to the drop pod by perhaps a squad of Elite Zealots, who have been tasked with retrieving the Macguffin (a callback to Halo: Reach with Zealots hunting for Forerunner artifacts). A squad of four Zealots would also provide a nice balance against the four members of Fireteam Scarlet - maybe you run into them across the course of the campaign?
    Finally, while I really like the idea of each member of Scarlet having a backstory, I think dedicating flashback missions to that backstory would be a misstep. Although they'd help the player connect with each character, they also wouldn't advance the game's plot. It would be better to have those character-developing moments in the present rather than the past, so that they're more relevant to the events at hand.

  • @Falx415
    @Falx415 Před 2 lety +12

    Not only do I love this idea, I love the story you set up, it has just enough nods to the original without being a complete copy paste, and I'm so glad you mentioned having a squad mechanic like Republic Commando, though narratively it could be difficult to justify seeing as presumably during missions with the squad you'll still be playing as Lance who is not the leader, so maybe it'd just be tied to the ping system Infinite has, narratively it's Lance sending a ping alert to the rest of the squad, "Brite with rocket launcher!" "Elite with a sword!" Etc, and then after it's followed by Nolan giving orders to the rest of the squad, "Focus that target!" "Keep your distance!" Etc, or were you thinking it'd just be a mechanic unique to when you play as Nolan in parts of the game, or would it also apply to nearby marine allies sort of like the original Battlefront II squad command worked where while limited you had a handful of orders, mostly it was just look at a bot ally and say "Follow me".

    ODST had you experience an an event from the main series from a differ perspective. We HAVE the ODST perspective, so IMO a "sequel" not focus on them: Ideally, i'd have it be a Covenant team, say the forces that raided the Truth and Reconciliation and the Pillar of Autumn at the end of CE, or Half Jaw's forces during the events of Halo 2 at times other then when they're with the Arbiter, or maybe the Zealot strike team from Reach, or to your point, a team from the Swords of Sanghelios during the events of Halo 4 and 5. The latter in particular would have a ripe excuse to make have the area you play around in be a Sangheilli enviorment, and we've had precious little Covenant cities or domestic spaces, so that could be neat. The SoS's less classist structure could allow allow some members of the team to be Grunts or a pair of Hunters, too.

    Amazing work, it feels like a wet dream just listening to the way you set it up but i just want to know how you’ll introduce the characters one by one,
    Like the first one you meet is Ada who just busted in from the roof of the FOB Lance is defending, repelling down with her rag tag squad of Marines almost as psychotic and destructive as her, one of them running a flamethrower and the rest having standard issue firearms… but with more explosives. She wants to greet you in a goofy tone but two ghosts cut the reunion short. Ada being the explosives expert she is just hurls one of those explosive cells at one and blew up the other with her spanker. While her squad of Marines stumble backwards from the shockwave of both explosions laughing maniacally in the process.
    With Nolan, you can accidentally run into when he is breach and clearing a room Lance is in, nearly knocking him out with the wall charges but is still concious enough to know its him, wiping out the rest of the hostiles in the remaining area the Marines begin sweeping the banished structure that you are currently liberating to use as a FOB, Nolan greets you being apologetic and surprised before forcing you get on your feet and help clear out the rest of the building with a heavy firefight between both sides with Ada performing a Pincer Manuver in collaboration with Nolan after coming in later on in the mission.
    As for Colt, him and another Marine who acts as his spotter have been pinned down and are currently hiding by large squadrons of hostiles who are currently trying to look for the pair. Lance rips through their lines causing a distraction large enough for Colt and his Spotter to escape and hold a hill nearby giving you a new asset when you are fighting outdoors but not when you’re inside. He’ll either shoot at a random enemy or prioritize what you decide to spot for him.
    Yeah thats about all.

    I have one dumb idea that probably conflict with the lore in 20 million ways. Gosh I fear the Halo fans that'll read this, but I want the Forerunner enemies to meet their full fruition.
    The big one is a way to tie Halo 4's Prometheans with more traditional Halo gameplay. I've felt like the Prometheans were good as support units, but were held back by the Knights as primary units. Additionally, Halo 4's Covenant didn't feel unique from the traditional Covenant, so I want something to tie the two together: A ragtag set of Elites in silver armor, all that's left of those who defied the Arbiter, led by a single elderly religious survivor of the great Schism wearing a combination of Honor Guard armor and a High Council helmet who excels at Forerunner sciences, he'd lead this group with the same fake sermons we loved from the prophets, Elites followed by Crawlers, Sentinels, Watchers, Enforcers, and NOT Knights because screw them. You'd play as Spartan Davis, who, spoiler warning for Spartan Assault of all things and was turned into a magical Forerunner brick at the end of the game, the same kind of magic brick that Halo 4's Spartan Ops wanted to do something with but quit partway through the narrative.
    He'd be resurrected as some promethean Spartan to serve as a non-blasphemous reclaimer for these Elites and you'd fight Banished and Flood in their attempts to restart the Great Journey... Only for them to turn on you the moment they realize you're not human, but promethean, and too mechanical to help with the great Journey. Some missions would take place from his perspective as he's able to get help from Forerunner technology, and some would take place from Spartan Palmer trying to save him from this new faction.

    LOVED THIS, especially the stuff on Zeta Halo and the overall mechanics of the campaign and it’s true stealthier style. The idea of exploring more of Halo’s rich history of the 3 decades of the human-Coventry war via flashbacks is creative & cool. The multiplayer tie in’s sound great. My two thoughts, one more fireteam member, a big dude with a SAW as an LMG specialist would be awesome. And give a better reason for Atriox to be chasing Lance or make it a member of the hand of Atriox hunting you down, maybe a chance to better flush out Jega Rdomnai? Overall sounds great but sadly my faith in 343i is so low the Mariana Trench is at a higher elevation.

    When you mentioned what happened to the Prometheans I thought that, since they would be still active at that time, we could have sections where they and the Banished are fighting each other, so your better option is to find routes that will not alert them, incentivizing stealth even more.
    I got this idea from Two Betrayals (Halo CE), where I would sometimes try (without success) to let the Covenant and the Flood kill each other (especially on legendary).

    I really like your idea! Whenever I pondered ODST 2 I always thought it would be shortly after the first game, but that has a bunch of weird lore obstacles to work with. But by using your new characters and taking place around Halo Infinite it fills in the gap of that campaign, and brings more attention to the recent events in Halo's timeline.

    a lot of this sounds good, but in particular i appreciate the fact the main protagonist of your proposed sequel is essentially just a more customizable rookie. rookie's death will always be the stupidest thing a book has done when it comes to a character from the halo games that i know of
    for dream story dlc - well, a successor to ODST is right up there, but seconding that i would love to see a DLC with the player as one of the few remaining S-IIIs sent to a swampy area by UNSC command based on data from the first halo installation discovered by humanity - to make sure that there isn't a flood threat on the ring, and if there is, to stop it from escaping containment by any means necessary.
    up third is one based on finding the arbiter as an elite, though i haven't thought too much about that. that's mainly just tied in with wanting playable elites back.

    If they were to make another ODST game, I would love to see something from the start of the war. Something set on harvest or another time period closer to the beginning of the human/covenant war. Or an ODST style game were we play as spartan 3 with SPI armour, were we basically are given a task to complete, like taking out a covenant leader or arms dealer/weapons compound, but shit goes wrong and we get separated from our company and we have to find surviving members and find a way to get off of the planet and make it back to the ship we took to get there or something like that. Could also be where you are being hunted by the forces and you have to try and survive with you little rag tag team of misfits but everyone ultimately ends up dying.

    Absolutely love this concept. I personally think the battle Royale being played as odst would be sooooo unique. Maybe it could even be pvpve; Keeping the stealth elements sacred. All players would drop in their pods at random locations on the map. Equipped with the standard suppressed smg and pistol; but replacing grenade slots and throw with medkit storage and healing usage (as I think grenades are a big problem in standard multiplayer and I think they could have an extremely negative impact on a “Battle Royale”. Players could stealthily traverse the city avoiding conflict with ai or rival players; or on the contrary, players could charge at ai defenses, patrols, compounds etc. To attempt to lock down special weapons and defense points. As mentioned with the med kits, The health system would be traditional odst; recharging shields but permanent health loss beyond shields down until healed with a medkit. Major points of interest on the map could create vast scenarios that dictate/control/change the gameplay each round. For example, clearing out the most heavily fortified AI compound would be one of the hardest things to do in a round; but doing so would allow you to access a command post that allows you to see all AI positions, maybe even give you the ability to give those enemy ai “orders”. But If not completed in a certain time after alarms are sounded all ai units on the map will rally at the compound. Another idea could be a POI that results in the superintendent aiding you for the rest of the match; sealing/opening certain paths, warnings of danger etc. Ammo would be sparse on any and every weapon found from the battle(s) that took place before. Same idea with some variation for a separate mode that’s for the VSM run and gun BR crowd; remove the AI, increase ammo, med spawns and any weapon that’s not the smg or pistol that players spawn with will come from drop pods. I could even imagine a mode incorporating these ideas with “raids” like escape from tarkov and The Cycle. Pvpve missions/tasks that could create a much needed secondary “progression/reward” system opposed to the simple battle pass being the one and only “end game”. Endless possibilities with the ODST concept alone that could REALLY prove 343s ability to actually deliver by creating fresh and unique “game modes”; not custom games 343, different ways of experiencing halo. Outside of the box like Reach’s “invasion”. Your only chance to keep the community on your side is to prove yourself before forge is released. After that, the community will take it into their own hands; and won’t believe in or trust in your vision any longer. we do believe strongly that forge will save halo, but will it be saved by you? Or by us?

    Considering the many stories of the Infinity arriving at Installation 07, I came up with another story for an intro mission for the main Infinite campaign. I felt that this story along side with ODST 2 would be a perfect way to add more lore into the universe.
    for the opening of the campaign, it should've had you in the POV of a random S4 doing orientation on the gen 3 armor (the look l/r and up/down). Then report to a weapons armory for shooting range training for further calibration of the gen 3, but the second you arrive at the weapons armory, the 1st banished ship hits the infinity. Battlestations call is given and you are sent to repel boarders for the "intro to combat" portion of most opening missions. Order is given to abandon ship and you work your way to the hanger to try to get on a dropship. You see a group of marines getting pinned down and you get the objective to assist and cover them into a pelican. They successfully board, but you are then punched by atriox which sends you flying for about 10 yards(which should've acted as the intro for boss fights). You and atriox fight it out, but for story purposes, you lose and Atriox kills you. Atriox then proceeds to move to the other side of the hanger where the master chief is located which leads into the initial opening cutscene. Following the opening cutscene of Halo Infinite, it lines up with how the team of ODST 2 gets off of Infinity.
    (and as an easter egg similar to killing makarov in MW1, you have the ability to kill atriox early causing a time paradox easter egg but doing so will be very very difficult. If this is done, the player is killed by getting gunned down by overwhelming enemies or dies in the fireball as seen in the cutscene when the chief is thrown off the infinity)
    As for the Spartan 4, if 343 ever wanted to get rid of Palmer, we could replace the spartan 4 with palmer which IMO would be a fairly decent redemption arc and continues to play into this game's theme of redemption (as we later see with chief, echo216 and the weapon in the normal campaign)
    Later on in the normal campaign or campaign DLC from Chiefs POV, you can hear marine chatter about a spartan 4 who covered them as they boarded a pelican but was subsequently killed by a massive brute. (as an easter egg to your sacrifice)

    Nolan - Khary Payton (Sovreign Uriel from Legends of Vox Machina) The man can do both high energy and gravitas whilst really selling the experience of the character.
    Ada - Cherami Leigh (FemV Cyberpunk) is absolutely perfect at portraying rough and ready characters with hidden depth to them.
    Colt - Neil Newbon (Astarion BG3) Excels at realising complex characters and bringing their core emotions to the forefront in gripping ways.
