The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Anyone here in 2024 ?
Yup. California Dreamin' was a reality for me in those years. LA became where it's at. But not all it's cracked up to be. Aand going back 25 years after the riots, WAAY worse than it was.
Yep. This was (in my opinion) their best song, one of the best songs ever, and still gives me chills. The haunting harmonic vocals are stunning to this day. One of a kind.

Good for you....
You love FAKE PRETEND singing
Are you here because..
You love FAKE PRETEND singing ???
How did Cass Cass git so fat.
In 2000, my 16 year old daughter came to me so excited. She heard a "new" band The Mama's and Papas. I laughed my head off....priceless. I guess the music is timeless.
Heard the exact same words from a young co-worker a month ago about a new group called McFleetwood.
Real Cool...
Yep. Their music was great then and it's great now. Of them all, my two favorites were this one and Dream a Little Dream of Me.
Has she heard Spanky and Our Gang? They're great 💖
Reminds me of my seven year old nephew and his 'new' favorite singer Elvis Presley. When he heard he was dead....he CRIED.
Dear Cass Elliot. Bless her heart, she took all of that on the chin with style and grace, all for the benefit of the group. She deserved so much more. I have no doubt that the Angels in heaven were happy to receive her,for she had a voice that could reign in their choir.
I disagree, she had a sense of humor. When John brought it to her she thought it was hilarious
I heard this was a inside joke with the band. Everyone thinks they are singing about her weight but the truth was she was pregnant with her daughter and they were keeping it a secret from the public. Because of the times they thought it might hurt there career.
Which chin?????? 😁😁😁😁
@@MegaTurdnuggets 😂😂😂
I thought 'getting fat' meant making money.
Someone gave my mum tickets to see Cass at the Palladium, my dad couldn't go with her so she took the nine year old me. Didn't know who she was until that night, but I was a fan by the end of the show. She was engaging and funny all evening and even at the tender age of nine I understood what a great voice she had.
Then a couple of days later I found my mum in tears and momma Cass had gone. I was one of the lucky ones who'd seen her last show. Great loss.
Tell us more about that last show!
I was at one of Janis Joplins last concerts. It was so weird when she died.
@@jorger5777 Memories are such a difficult thing , especially from childhood. They were the days when people still dressed up to the nines to go to the theatre, especially the Palladium and it just seemed much more special back then.
I can't particularly remember what songs she sung, I'm pretty sure California dreaming and creeque alley were involved, probably other mamas and papas songs as well.
I just remember the quality of her voice, the clarity and melody she carried when singing.
The show was also a bit more than just her singing, she engaged with the audience, told a few tales and jokes as well. I remember her tip- toeing across the stage to much laughter just the sense that everyone was really enjoying it.
I wish I could bring the images of her singing back into my conscious and hear the songs she sang that night but unfortunately too much time has passed.
Both Cass and Joplin, gone too soon, but never forgotten 🎶
It sure was a huge loss. I listen to Creeke Alley daily on my Playlist for at work. The harmony is what stirs my soul.
Cass sure could sing - what a wonderful, natural singer
she had some voice that was strong and powerful god bless her
Check out her singing with John denver, leaving on a jet plane, totally live, it's incredible
And I always wondered why she didn't take the lead in songs , with the voice of an angel she sang..m
Love her voice
She was so cute. Had a voice to beat all too. 👍
As of November 2020, only Michelle survives - now 76 years old.
She was 23 when this videotape was made.
Michelle is still BEAUTIFUL...LOVE HER ❤❤❤
She was probably about 2 months pregnant also.
Hey!.....She did not age well.....
@@willomina1990 - A hedonistic life style takes its toll
She is still beautiful. Love the song!!
I always wondered how MaMa Cass felt about having to sing that one line about herself ….such a talent
people weren't offended like today
It implies wealth and success, not fat in the literal meaning but I can see what you mean
she would call herself slim helicopter black vegan today
@@dwes49 it was about Cass being pregnant with her daughter and trying to hide it!!! Not about getting rich
@@Deugzo1 it was about prosperity. John Phillips said it himself. Also included the line near the end “and everybody’s getting fat except mama cass” which referred to the success that the people around her were achieving which occurred at that time.
I don't think any group could harmonize as good as them
beatles, CSNY, beach boys
no vocal gimmicks, no pitch correction, even when they were all singing the same notes, their voices blended perfectly!
This song was electronically modulated in the recording studio, plus, this is a lip-sync
And on top of that, only one guy on the guitar and the rest were uncredited studio musicians. This was very common in this period. Dave McGowan
@@DouglasUrantia And in some of their performances, I've seen Michelle eating bananas and grapes while "singing"; now THAT'S talent!
They don't need to. They're lip-synching.
@@PatrickTheWriter It's a good thing, too, since John forgot to remove his capo before the song started (which he does at 00:05, I couldn't help but notice lol)....if they were live that would've been quite a mess ;-)
Cass and Denny had the voices, but the 4 of them together were magic.
Michelle and John just added for looks lol
@@ethanwood9124 John and Michelle wrote their hits. Including thie one.
Actually I think it’s John and Michelle’s vocals that really sell this song.

SUPREMELY BRILLIANT.
Some of the most clever pop lyrics you'll ever find. Man, Michelle was an absolute doll.
John Phillips, songwriter and arranger, was the brains behind it. One of the most talented groups of the 60s.

For anyone that t doesn't already know, Creque's Alley, was an actual place in St.Thomas , Virgin Islands, where the Mama's and Papas lived for a period of time.
also tells the story of how they met, and the loving spoonful forming
Interesting, thanks.❤From an old '60's fan.❤😂❤
Never get that back
And Duffy's was hip bar there .....
I have seen Creque alley and went to Duffy’s love shack in Redhook.
I’m grateful that I was able to spend my youth with music like this.
BEST MUSIC EVER.

This is about 8 months after I saw them at the Berkeley Community Theater. The best live harmonies I ever heard, or ever expect to hear.
So cool. Been obsessed with band about 2 months now. Its that harmony. So powerful. Love this band
Try a Beach Boys concert.
Superb
so were they as good as their studio recordings?
Fantastic 😊
I love Cass’ voice-she was an amazing singer! RIP
I've just had a reply from someone who alleges cass was a big drug user, I cant buy that myself, all 4 in the group might have smoked a bit of weed at times that a long way from major drug use.
Cass was ahead of her time, a legend, and gone too soon - all in one life.
terrible dress sense though
@@andymatthews7617 well either you believe she was drug free and choked on her midnight snack sammich, or she overdosed on pills and alcohol.

Cass had the best voice she was an absolute legend ❤️❤️🇬🇧
Michelle Phillips was an absolute Doll.
I remember watching this on TV as a young child. When it was over, that's when my parents would send me off to bed saying it's getting late while they enjoyed late night TV and the Flip in Wilson show. I even remember watching Mrs. Phillips enjoy those grapes and banana slices reclining in the tub on Laugh In live as it happened. My how time flies.
Cass Elliot was the star of this group folks...Word.
Oh please... You forget that it was John Philips who was largely responsible for writing the songs, arranging them and forming the whole group in the first place. So many childish comments here 🙄.
Yes. John Phillips did all the writing. My uncle went to high school with him and he said, "he wasn't nothing but a dope smokin hippie"! Washington Lee high school in Alexandria Va. No longer Washington Lee. They certainly had their sound.
I love when Mama Cass throws the harmony over the line, "...thumb out to hitchhike..."....that sounds so damn fine!
Mama Cass, what a natural talent!!! forever missed
Their harmonies are simply outstanding. AND no autotune in sight. John Phillips. Great singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. At 68+ years I remember them well. Michelle is the only one left. They were REALLY good. Give a listen.
And the Wreaking Crew behind the scenes.

Mama Cass, what a beautiful voice... what a striking and confident personality..., She radiates joyfulness...
Outstanding voices and timeless songs not like the shit out today
And, yet, behind the smiles Cass suffered from often-crippling depression. She was never happier, however, than when she was singing.

I have come to appreciate the Mamas and Papas more as the yers go by. Especially Michelle Phillips. What a voice she possessed. And her appearance! The quintessential “hippie chick.”

I'm sure everyone has a favorite song by the Mama's & Pap's but Creeque Alley has always been my favorite. Few groups have this kind of harmony.
I loved Creeque Alley, but my favorite was "Twelve-Thirty." Possibly because I knew Laurel Canyon and Nichols Canyon so well.
Creeque's Ally is located on St Thomas VI. So was the coffee shop Sebastians. I understand they stayed on the island for awhile.
I only found this song and group this year due to the magic of CZcams.

Love their songs, love the vibe as they perform, love the passion they bring. Just a genuine band that I love and appreciate all they did for music
I'm 63, remember there music back in those days, Truly superb.
Trey, the music of the 60s was magical! As a kid in Canada back then, it was a wonderful time to grow up and come of age. Probably every generation feels this way, but from my perspective, the 1960s were the Golden Age. We definitely had the best music. You’re in for a real musical treat (a feast for the ears and the mind) as you explore more and more bands/groups from this era.If you haven’t already done so, get a guitar (my choice) and learn to play this incredible music. The Beatles are the best for a reason; however, there are a lot of great Canadian bands and solo artists to listen to and enjoy. One of the best is Ontario’s Gordon Lightfoot. Genre (folk, rock, Motown, etc) doesn’t matter when you’re listening to great music (as you’ve discovered with the Mamas and Papas). Enjoy,
I was in high school when this music came out and it was a phenomenon…. it was a different and in some ways better time
I'm right here with you, I was born way too late
AYYY love to see it, 2003 here 🤙
