The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Those of us that age really do appreciate our music from the Sixties. Never gets old.
NEVER AGES.
Amen to that
It is really dated. But I was not 10 to 21 when it was released, unlike you.
The music never gets old only us.
75 here, still on it 😊
We will never be this fortunate again.
Never will we be this fortunate again.
That we will never see a hat like that again? =;]
Mama Cass is unsurpassed. She was the voice of heaven
I want to go back in the 60's, and stay there forever. Sadly, its impossible to do so.
Instead of making killer weapons, brilliant minds should make a time machine
Not sure I want to...It looks prettier than now though
Believe me you wouldn't want to. A lot of young people died being forced to go to Vietnam. I remember one 4th of July setting off firecrackers with my neighbors son who was about to graduate high school, and next thing I know he was killed in Vietam only 18. I lucked out, by the time I turned 18 they ended the draft. Plus also not all the music in the 1960s was great, it was like the 1980s, a lot of great music but a hell of a lot of really stupid music as well. I was looking at a video of Freddie and the dreamers the other day, my God, what the hell were they thinking? Plus back then there was a hell of a lot of pressure to get married by the time you were 21 which I sure as hell did not want to do. It was weird, if you didn't everybody thought you were queer but I didn't give a fuck, I wasn't falling into that trap before I got a steady career
Me too...and in the 70s...
Compared to today, I’ll go back to any decade from the 60’s on.
To say they were going for only 3 years is unreal. Their music is profound and seems to have been eternal as the decades have rolled by. Never dates in my estimation; lives forever ❤.
Will we ever have this level of talent in music ever again? The mama's and papa's were one of the greatest of all time. Their music never gets old!
Wonderful music such talent
NO !!!
No
We could only PRAY REAL,REAL HARD!!!
The 60s will NEVER be topped.
I was born in 71 and this song was always on the Radio in England..
England is a smelly place.
Their harmonies were perfect , sounding so beautiful, Michelle and Cass had wonderful voices ..damm near perfection .
Not many, if any, better.angelic sounds, no one around anymore that comes close.
Why are all their videos lip synced?
@@rounds1954 Almost all TV appearances then were lip synched - it was rare for artists to play live on TV - and it was actively discouraged as it took far longer to setup. Also, the technology didn't yet exist to reproduce live the sounds they got in the studio - which meant live performances were often very disappointing by comparison. So although a lot of artists were very unhappy miming (you can often see the less experienced artists smirking at each other cos they felt so silly doing it) it was convenient for almost everyone
There was a trend at the end of the 1960s and into the 1970s to - as part of the record production process - separate the backing track from the lead vocals. This was then used in TV appearances so that the lead singer could sing live while the instruments were mimed - but in the mid 1960s that was very rare and even then it was only solo singers got that.
@@rounds1954 Back then artist were singers regardless of lip sync, unlike today where it's all about appearance.
Denny had the most beautiful voice and carried most of their hits. Together they were magic.
It always amazed me how the mamas and the papas sounded like a mass choir.
probably in the production.i'd bet some of these vocals were double tracked.
Multi tracking was very common.
It was all post production. Phil Spector did it with all his girly bands
@@tomloft2000 most definitely
@@loosilu yeah except it was usually only four track equipment so still very impressive. Seargant Peppers was recorded on for track equipment. Yes I know. Impossible to believe. Tubular bells in 72 used 24 track equipment.
My gosh the harmonies on this song are just mind blowing!
i wish my twin sister and i could have sung the harmonies with this fab band ,We would have blended in rather nicely lol xx long live the 60s era
Indeed they are but that applies to virtually all their songs, Mama Cass great performer and Michelle, well I loved her the first time I saw her on t.v. and love her to this day even now I'm 70
Like a whole choir singing
@@paulyate1642 I'm 72 and I still love her too. Ever since I first saw her on TV in 1966.
@@suestephan3255 Well, they';re lip-synching here and on their records they were heavily overdubbed - their producer Lou Adler was one of America's best producers at this time. Nevertheless - even when singing live they had a hugely powerful sound.
Cass Elliott was a beautiful lady and amazing voice!!❤ R.I.P. Sweetie❤
She was a great great singer and a truly nice person taken to early 😥😥😥
Badge had the X factor. Michele not so much but then it made Cass stand out.
Beautiful harmony, lots of drama.
It still riles me when she did Carol Burnett and other shows they would write her comic bits with unfunny fat jokes and she would laugh and go along but it had to hurt.
She could sing like a halo of Angels
She had a beautiful Daugther
Really miss Mama Cass, what a beautiful voice 😢
Mama Cass was so Great & she herself had a special Beauty! RIP angel !
Great??? She was a thief, a doper drug user, and a glutton.
See the NY Times recent write-up on her; she was an amazing person and performer--whose life was cut short far to young.
I agree but that harmony is not all her.
Playback!
@@watsonwanderer8306 it wasn't cut short....she killed herself.
I love this song by mama & papa.
My Father even pointed out Cass Elliott’s’ voice to me as a child! One of the best singing groups of the 60 ‘s!
I love the quiet story of Cass. It's so morbid that people made up lies about her death.
Agree. Cass had the X factor and voice, they couldn’t have done it without her. Beautiful harmony, lots of drama.
It's mainly Denny's voice that takes the lead, but its hers too
@@charlottesnarktimes3242 the best way magic of universal studios hollywood movies show TV and love you to get the vaccine hollywood
Denny and Cass had such great voices!
Michelle held her own nicely against everybody!
Best voices of the group
Cass had a haunting voice I loved hearing there songs!!!
Denny, man what a voice
An absolute Chad
Its sad that the Mamas and Papas only lasted like 3 years. So many classic hits in such a short time. They would have been fabulous if they could've been around for many many years
Success destroys creativity for most people. Very hard to sustain.
Had it not been for inter-group romantic drama, then maybe the Mamas & the Papas would've lasted longer. Shame that Cass Elliot passed on so young. May she continue to RIP! 💐
@EarlHutton2030 that's what happens when you eat yourself to death.
@@thomasjensen6243 Yep!
One of the greatest musical groups of all time. They represented an entire period of time.
I grew up in the 60’s, and this wonderful music takes me back to the best days of my life.
Two beautiful women of rock history ❤
Cass always stands out vocally and visually (respect) as talented and fluid.
i get u shes litterally so stunning
Amazing
That’s why she went out on her own.
She is actually so beautiful
Mama Cass Elliot, ONE of the classiest ladies!! She always was dancing in her videos. What an awesome group, INCREDIBLE talent, ALL of them!!!! ^_^
Oh yeh, a fat chick dancing in a tent is amazing lol
If you can call swaying about dancing.
@@simoneast1973 don't be a dick.
She used to do a lot of drugs, pretty classy right?
There was no doubt that you could hear Cass .Incredible voice.....
Denny Doherty was amazing. And so was Cass Elliot. Their friendship and bond was so strong that they could have been mistaken for life-long, childhood friends.
What a time in fashion. All those colors !!!
Awesome Vocals! I was born in 1967, but I grew up with this music. Michelle was so gorgeous!🥰
Denny had an incredible voice.
He’s Canadian.
Now, this is how to match videos with music. I grew up pop in the 50s and 60s in the San Francisco Bay Area. I still live 30 miles south of the City and I still believe in the spirit of that city.
It will return to it's former besuty!!
Also, from the Bay Area 😊
The only wrong thing about this song is that it's too short :) I could hear these voices all day long, any day
The studio version is about three minutes. I guess they were only alloted two minutes to do the song on the show.
This has to be one of the best records of the 1960s, just sung brilliantly.
It was quite and honor to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show.
True that!
Dear old Ed Sullivan. Everyone tried to imitate him, back in those days!
I would not call lyp synch a "performance", more of an "appearance". But still an honor.
If you want to see a great "performance" by them, check them out at Monterey Pop. John Phillips had a lot to do with organizing Monterey Pop as well.
Denny Doherty's tenor is magnificent. One of the best of his generation.
I get chills listening to this fabulous group, what a sound!
Thank The Beach Boys.
Yes,yes,yes....
@@Tallinheels BULLSHIT !!!!
Thank THE WRECKING CREW !!!!
Me, too!♡ right now!!
By God, I was 7 then. Hearing this at 62 I just get goose pimples (or bumps if you prefer). Just incredible...
Me at 61 😄.Cheers frm Croatia
Hey, I know what you mean. I'm five years your junior at 57 now (not sure how that happened...LoL). Gorgeous, gorgeous song. I was 7 in 1971 when my little brother was born and remember this on the radio and being excited about being his big brother! God bless. :)
@@tombixler3512 A lovely memory and a beautiful song. All the best. :)
Hey I'm 61 and really like their vibe
I was 6 I loved them then and still now!
The kind of music that leaves you stunned when you first hear it
This is absolutely hidden treasure😂 I have no idea why so much 🤣
Sweet great Times
Listen to Mama Cass's voice come right through everyones great.
they are lip singing
Mamas and Papas have great songs. 🎶🎼🎵
They could really sing. Denny, had some kind of singing lessons. Michelle, just pure beautiful. Love this group. ❤
Great harmonies and great music. My mother loved this group. She got me into loving this music! ❤
To me they totally captured the beautiful part of the 60s
Their performances will have transcended time , race and nation
Michelle was the epitome of "the girl next door." Stunning.
Denny Doherty was a great singer. I don’t think he gets the recognition he deserved.
I agree !!
He really was
He was a good singer, but his private life....I don't know bro
Teddy Malfoy just talking about his talent as a singer. Nothing else.
Agreed,
These guys were musical magic.
I remember watching this on the Ed Sullivan show...what great talent.
Damn I so remember this the harmonies were awesome and still are.
As a genuine 'Golden Oldie' (81 years young) the Mammas and Pappas evoke such wonderful memories of my distant past, l get a real kick hearing their iconic music. They don't these days make fantastic music like that any more.
I'm 41 years old & i absolutely agree with you. Sorry for my fuzzy english.
Here I am rocking my 75th year on planet earth, and this song is one of my best ever memories of my life :)
Cass was 5 months pregnant here and the best part of this performance is when she takes the mike and sing "Words of Love" live. Wish they would have kept it all together.
Thank you for pointing out she was pregnant during this performance. I hate how people continually mock her weight. I mean shame on her for daring to be an average woman, to be Rubenesque, people act like she was a star on My 600 lb Life.
Só na radiola aí, playback, o pessoal nem disfarça.
@@charlottesnarktimes3242 Yes, she didn't look that bad. She had a beautiful face.
So she was pregnant.Looked pretty heathy and happy.Still what a voice!
Cass and Denny's voices....yesssss
Best voices in the group
Several years later another group from Europe called ABBA was a mirror group of The Mamas & the Papas. Another great great Harmony group. I don't think we will get those days back again with great singing and harmony that will cling to the hearts of teenagers and young lovers like it used to.
its a shame but i agree totally
Yeeeessss my 2 favorites are ABBA and Mamas and Papas for sure!
Monday, Monday" is a 1966 song written by John Phillips and recorded by the Mamas & the Papas, using background instruments played by members of The Wrecking Crew[1] for their 1966 album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears.
Mama Cass, what a talent!
This song... the feeling of having lost something important or dear... my childhood!
I remember watching this Ed Sullivan episode on our black and white TV. Great groups like this with beautiful harmony just don't seem to happen any more sadly!
I sometimes wonder if I've lived in a dream and woken up in hell.
I watched this on Sunday evening Dec. 11 1966.
The first time Iheard them that was it ......Im 68 now still feel the same 😀😀😀
I'm 68 years too. Seems like yesterday.
what a fantastic sound they had and this type of harmony singing has unfotunately gone today so great to have this to watch and admire.
Good group. Great harmony. Memorable songs.
I wasn't even alive in the 60's. But I can FEEL the vibes, like I was actually there, so cool how music can create feelings of nostalgia from a time I never knew.
@dolphinshark3202 I'm 74 yo and imho the 60s was the absolute best decade ever warts and all. Best music, best cars and much better, simpler times. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
One of my all time favorite songs...💚🎸
I'm glad I grew up in the 60s to appreciate this awesome music they were such a talent harmony
2004 baby and very jealous
I could watch this a thousand times and it would never get tired. Thank you.
wish id have lived in the states around this time.what an era.
Me to this world today is total crap
Why in that time? Why not in this one?
When seeing this it always graps me to the troath. These young powerful people are now old or passed away.
Their voices and harmonies are so mesmerizing!!! I needed more than 3 minutes
@Peter Evans Wasn’t their point
i could hear that song for ten or more....
Although the song later got so overplayed, it was a sensation in 1966 (3 weeks at #1 in May) and became many people's favorite. The harmony here is unmatched. I miss the 60s a lot. Lovely Cass wore those clothes on another appearance on the show.
I was a young Airman in Thailand when this song was released, it brings back special memories,
'65? Wow, that was a while ago.
Wuts ur age now
this is one the all time greats !
I’m absolutely in love with Michelle Phillips ❤️💛
Years later she had a guest appearance on Star Trek: TNG and she looked even more beautiful. I didn't recognise her at first.
I don’t like mondays this is the perfect song for that day. I love the mamas and the papas.
I Love them too!🤗
Well never hear a voice like mamma cass..her voice on that group is finominal!
my mom had this album... bless your heart 1940-2016, came from germany in the the 60s and loved this album not knowing a single word of english, coning from Germany.
Hi,how are you doing?
Great song and very timeless
Love how the harmonies are worked out on this song...Good stuff man.
My middle school used to play this classic every Monday morning lol. Good times
Mama Cass Eliot had a wonderful voice and she looked so kind. What a pity she died so early. Bless her. This song is so beautiful, full of hope.
Their harmonies are always so impressive. I imagine listening to them singing live would show that their voices were very loud when they were all singing together. Very powerful voices.
i remember after many hard years of labor I finally got to make monday a day off for good. i would sit home relax and listen to this song. that was cool.
those harmonies are just unbelievable, is there anything more perfect, beautiful and serene?
Simply, the greatest harmonies ever ❤
I was only 2 when their music was first hitting the airwaves, but my parents had the vinyl album! Later, when I was a fat teen, I took comfort that Mama Cass was big, but she could sing!!! 🎶 I loved all their songs and their harmony!
Good for you gal.
Cass was the big sister I never had.
Fabulous singers.
Best era of the music 🌴 I want to live in LA 🇺🇲
First time I hear this I was 12 yrs old in an arcade back in 1983 it sounded surreal then as it surreal now. I love it.
This song is a memory clear as a bell to me when I heard it on the radio whenever my mom would play it.A hauntingly cool memory from my childhood at around 7 years old in the 67,68?
Loved their harmonies. Loved Mama Cass above all. Great group.
Hi,how are you doing?
I am becoming such a huge fan of theirs! I especially love dancing in the street and do you wanna dance!
The music the groups the songs were much better back then.
Great performance
Trip down memory lane is so good for the heart and soul!...Feel good factor every time I hear these old classics ❤❤❤
Shout out to the brilliant Lou Adler who was the Record Producer and the California Sound Designer of this timeless musical production...
Joyce
Makes me happy and want to cry with joy 🤩
All of them were so talented and awesome, Mama Cass being my favorite! ❤️
Hi,how are you doing?
I love you Cass Forever!
A blast from the past !
Every Monday at work I have to play this song. Makes the day.
