It's a great late-night mood album. I don't think there was anyone else that sounded much like this in 1987.
This is one of the best “1,4,5” chord progression bands. I agree it’s a very one note album but it manages to make this basic pop songs into something melancholic and melodic in a really indie way.
I think Honey's Dead by The Jesus and Mary Chain is a great album. And it's different
Love your reactions long time (well, since Covid lockdown). As a 17 year old, in 1987, this sounded a lot better than it does today. Still a few great tracks, particularly About You. 1987 was a strange year, with this album and the last of The Smiths, but the beginning of a really interesting phase in alternate music, pre-Madchester. I’d highly recommend The Wedding Present’s George Best, The House of Love album with Christine as its opener and Lovely, by The Primitives. Also, a must listen is My Bloody Valentine’s You Made Me Realise EP. Sorry, I’m a mid-50s bore 😊
Good call on the alt-country hunch you were getting - they went much further down that road on '94's Stoned and Dethroned
Such a great album and band. Love the sound textures, specially what they did with the guitars. Also, the melodies are beautiful and original. Disagree they're derivative of Just like Honey. My fav track is Cherry Came Too.
I think you can hear Velvet Underground self-titled third album a lot on this one.
It must be time for the Second Coming by the Stone Roses. John Squire's guitar work is next level
Darklands isn't my favorite J&MC album, but I still love it. I don't notice all that Just Like Honey's influence on this album, as you pointed out. But I understand what you're saying. It's such a catchy song... When you hear those guitar tones and some similar chord progressions (in some tracks) It's hard not to remember the band's first album. But, apart from that, I think it's a very different album, with its strengths and weaknesses, which shows them moving in a new direction, without all that noise, which is cool, but gets tiring after a while (at least for me). Automatic and Honey's Dead, their next albums, represent what I consider the band's best, powerful melodies and a more infectious rhythm. I believe, however, that you can better appreciate Stones and Dethroned, a more acoustic, almost country J&MC, as you rightly observed, at one point, in Darklands. To finish this long comment (sorry), their latest album, Glasgow Eyes, is surprisingly good. I place it among the best in the band's discography.
I'm a die hard fan but haven't enjoyed the last album. Their last truly good album was Munki, a late 90s release. That's a long time ago.
@@justaguy1451 I really loved it. It's a bit surprising for the use of synths. But it sounded refreshing and very enjoyable for my ears. Much better than the last one, Damage and Joy. Munki is a great album too, a kind of summary of their entire carreer.
@@lucianoteixeira7993I find their last album really outdated. It sounds like what some people were doing in the early 90s, people like Daniel Ash and his band Love & Rockets. I enjoyed their previous album better, even though It is comprised mostly by songs previously released on Jim and William solo work plus songs they wrote for Linda Reid's Sister Vanilla project. I already knew and liked the songs, but not how It was rerecorded. The production was pretty sloppy, not up to their standards.
I`ve never heard April Skies described as "not bad" before.
This wasn't well recieved by fans at it's launch due to the huge change in sound from Psycho Candy even if the songs arent structurally that different. To put that in perspective, a lot of JMC fans felt more feedback somehow meant a more genuine JMC song and also didn't like the slower songs like Just Like honey from the debut album .
I can understand this a little because JMC made their name on the chaotic feedback that accompanied their songs, so fans were expecting more of this.
My favorite 'Double Negative' album!!!
They are a Scottish band!
Dare I say the 3rd last song has a little Ramones feel
