  • HEIF/HEIC Files: What are HEIF image files? The Jpeg has been around for over 27 years but is there now a new kid on the block? The HEIF/HEIC file format offers higher quality images on a file half the size of a traditional Jpeg. In this episode we look at what they are and how they compare to Jpegs.

      Hi, yes it is long overdue, we will have to wait and see if the camera manufacturers start using it. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.

    MacOS start from HighSierra is now support HEIF format. Windows 10 as well, but with free additional codec provided by Microsoft. Converting HEIC file to JPEG with the same quality will increase the size 3 times bigger

      Hi Fandy, there are definitely some work arounds available at the moment. It will be interesting to see if other camera makes start using HEIC as well. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.

      Windows 11 doesn't support HEIF and even after downloading and installing the HEIF codec, it still does not work. Do I need to turn something on, somewhere?

    I would love to see a comparison to AVIF and possibly even WebP. Those seem to be even more efficient than HEIF, though WebP seems more geared towards text than photos - it definetely does work well though, being smaller than JPEG by quite a bit. The main advantage I still see HEIF and AVIF have over it though is 10bit and different chroma sub-sampling support. HEIF 10bit is such an improvement over JPEG 8bit alone, even though the files aren't that much smaller for the same amount of visual detail.

    I am more inclined to wonder whether HEIF is stillborn. It will require much more than a technical superiority photo or computer nerds can rave about, in order to unseat a standard as entrenched as JPEG. It may be that jpeg can “only” record about 17 million different colours, but it is estimated that the human eye can distinguish “only” about 10 million.
    I am reminded of the way that Linux fanboys have been predicting the imminent demise of Windows ever since Linux first appeared, more than thirty years ago now.

    Right. The HEIC is a step forward. Unfortunately the folks running image sites like Flickr have not gotten around to hiring a coder to help the transition. Hasselblad just added HEIC to the X2D, 10 bit files, about 25 - 30% smaller. It's an improvement.

    Did you watch Gordon Laing's comparison video? It may have been a pre-production camera, but it seemed that the Canon implementation of HEIF may not be quite ready for the mainstream yet.

      @ThePhotoShow  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Fraser, yes I did, it is hard to tell if it was an issue with the camera or the Jpeg conversion. Until PS and LR fully support the format I think everyone is just using work arounds.

      I have no idea "how" it works, but I bought a Canon R7 recently with this new format. I have done some tests and it is doing something amazing and I have no idea why. It is super clean! I can shoot at ISO 8000-10000 with barely any ISO noise. If I shoot raw, I get the usual APS-C garbage noise. On the R7 it is an HDR PQ HEIF file... so it is also giving amazing dynamic range. You know how an average scene spans across most of the histogram, well with this HDR HEIF format the scene only fills 2/3 of the histogram and there is tons of space to the left and right of the histogram. So you don't lose any highlights or shadows, even in extreme contrast. I have never seen anything like this on my FF cameras shooting raw. The funny thing is, noone is talking about it. People just do their usual raw shooting and don't investigate. The R7 even does HDR PQ CR3 shooting.

    You can open heic in photoshop, but you can't edit the file without having to save as jpeg. This makes it useless for photo editing. How can this be? PS has had years to figure this out. What's the hold-up.
    Here's an annoying example... You take a photo on your iPhone. You open it up in PS and look at the image size. It's 72 dpi and the dimensions are huge! If you want to shrink it down you have to work on the dpi and the dimensions. Fine. But, if you alter these the only saving option you have is jpeg (or tiff or other non-heic formats). Basically, you cannot alter an heic file at all. Only when this is possible will I entertain switching to heic.
