Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus' following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

No Judas in any performance of this musical has EVER come close to Carl Anderson. Raw vocal power and range on display, mixed with strong emotion... sometimes it's hard to hear without tearing up, it's that beautiful.

Yeah, it seems that anytime it has been possible for all to get along our betters show us how we are wrong. They are probably right and we are lucky to have them show us how wrong we are.
No matter how many times I've seen this move I still get chills. I have no idea how the director managed to get the perfect cast in this bone-dry minimalist setting and perform one magical scene after another. And the criticism from Judas is in my opinion well-deserved. He was screaming for this dude to stop letting fame get to his head and the Jesus character was like "whatever dude".
And same director did the amazing Fiddler on the Roof

Of course not. It got worse. Churches lie to your face to keep your attendance. Sermons are carefully crafted to avoid all the inconvenient bits. Proven historical inaccuracies are stated as objective, unquestionable facts. The very last thing the Jesus cult wants you to do is question any of its dogma. Because religions fall apart if their followers start thinking for themselves.
If you’re talking about the bible, It has translation and the addition of various chapter breaks has skewed the meaning of much of the text

translations do have errors but, more high fidelity translations are used today or even Latin

Yeah...this whole opera is filled with fabulous music, wonderful characters, and stellar singing. But yes, Carl Anderson is perfect in this role with a voice that makes me feel a bit like weeping. I have so many sentimental memories of this music.

This is an untouchable performance!!! There will never be another performer who can do what Carl Anderson did for this show. He is a master class performer who will never be replicated. He makes you sympathize for Judas's character, and see that he was necessary to fulfill Gods plan.

Now I accept that this is a mythological story, and that the Creator of the universe does not dictate or interfere in the lives of people.

It's hard to believe this movie is 50 years old now! And it still holds up, especially Judas, who makes for a magnificent tragic hero.

It is actually epic...!
i think it’s really cool how that tune is tied to, like, bad things happening. outside of the overture, you first hear it here, when judas is accurately predicting that everything is going to go wrong. you later hear it kick in “judas’s death” right around when judas makes up his mind about his fate. and of course that riff is heard 39 times as jesus is whipped in “trial before pilate”. even if you include its occurrence in the overture, in this movie, the guitar riff is heard as you see the actors get the cross out! i just think it’s neat how that little leitmotif represents something and takes part in the storytelling

Now and forever the very best portrayal of JCS's 'poor old Judas'. This beautiful man and his amazing voice. His performance - especially the betrayal - was heartbreaking.
I cherish this film, and was in love with Carl Anderson from age12 and still. I still get chills over his performance and brilliance. I used to think, as a child, that 'Jesus', ( Ted Neeley), was dull and weak, but Judas, (Carl Anderson) had a valid and heartbreaking perspective. I just love Carl Anderson, R.I.P> for real.

1. neeley has good range and projection, but poor control compared to anderson. neeley has trouble sustaining, and he cracks real bad a few times on his high notes.
2. one word, SOUL. Neeley is playing jesus, filling a role, but ultimately it's just a costume. Anderson IS judas, despite not having a more "Period" outfit like jesus, in fact likely having the least period outfit(save for possibly king herod), you still believe his performance more. you can tell he read the script and got into Judas' headspace, dug deep into his own personal well of emotional experience, and just bled his soul out straight into the microphone. you almost feel he's drawing from a painful memory, maybe a friend he drifted away from after they joined a cult, maybe a depressed friend he tried to help out of the pit, who committed suicide. maybe a serious relationship ruined over a mistake/misunderstanding that ended in begging them to listen, begging to be heard, as they walked out of your life. whatever it is, it melts that wall between actor and character and fully sells it in a way i don't think i've seen before or since.
But when I watch it, I can’t stop thinking of David Cross in Jeepers Creepers.

@@jfkesq I wouldn't say so; if he knew the fate of Jesus, he would not have betrayed him to the Romans. Even if he didn't, a true friend would not do that. Judas Iscariot was a traitor from the beginning; a fairweather friend and a warning to all about what the less-loyal do when they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. In any case, he pulled an Oedipus - if you really believe he did what he did to keep Jesus from dying - and fulfilled the prophecy he sought to avoid.

I saw him play Judas in a live revival in the 90s and he was even better! 30 years later and both he and Ted Neeley were amazing! The show was so good, I went twice!

I'm an atheist, but god this is one of my favorite films of all time. The music and cinematography and performances were just off the charts excellent.

Same my grandma loved this movie and I liked it because she loved it so much
this is my favorite version, but not just for Carl's voice, it also has a distinct advantage over other versions imo. Every other version I've heard has a different ending, and in those versions, the entire song is basically a monologue directed at Jesus. Every line is a thing Judas is saying to Jesus to try to convince him of his perspective. This (and his live version) are the only ones who break that conversation, when he screams "HE WON'T LISTEN" at the end he's acknowledging that he's already lost knows that it's already too late.
True perfection... I was so fortunate, to see him perform this with the original cast, when they did an anniversary tour... It still brings tears to my eyes... Timeless... 😎🙏🇨🇦

I’m a fan of so many versions of JCS, from original album to movies, soundtracks, stage shows over the decades-Carl Anderson as Judas just blows all the rest away on so many levels: voice, acting, presence, total commitment to the role. In this scene he sets the tone-along with Jewison’s directing, the setting, choreography etc-for the amazing film to follow. I got hooked on Superstar when my dad brought home the original vinyl when it came out. I was about eight. I’m 60 now so I grew up with this. Anderson is incomparable. Now I’ll go watch it again!

He is absolutely superb. On every level. This imo is the best individual acting performance in a musical, whether it be stage or screen, ever. And by a significant margin. He should have gotten far more credit.

I watched this with my 14 year old daughter yesterday. She loved it. She said it was quite moving.. gave her things to think about. And we were both sad at judas's end.. like he was used but it was part of the plan 🤷🏾♀️ I love this musical though. My year at school performed it for a week in 1995!

I grew up watching this film from my parents and we would watch it every Easter. I went to a Catholic elementary school even though our family wasn't really religious. But I remember seeing this performance when I was around 7 years old and it hit me and made me feel for him before I really even had deep feelings of emotion. That's one of the best things about this film, is you don't have to believe in order to pull something from the performances, I truly feel anyone can watch this and appreciate it.

It doesn’t get better than this right here. As a child, my favorite movie was this and it was this performance that drew me in. As an adult I was lucky enough to see both Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson live. They were both still so incredible.

I saw Carl Anderson and Ted Neely perform JC Superstar live in the early 90s. The actress who played Mary Magdalene during that run was great as well. Like you, I feel blessed that I got to see Carl and Ted play those iconic roles. I like the movie but if you saw it live you really felt the emotion both men put into their portrayals. Great performances. Best musical I have seen hands down and I don't get out to the theater these days so it will remain #1. I watched an updated theatrical performance that was done a few years ago in the U.K. and the actor portraying Jesus did a good enough job but there was no comparison between the updated Judas and Carl Anderson. He owned that role...period. I was saddened to learn he passed away. I trust that unlike the character he played he was welcomed home with open arms.

One of the greatest performances of any song ever.
This song, as sung by Carl Anderson, literally led me back to my faith in my 20s after some years full of questions and doubts based on what I'd seen the churches get up to. This song "let me" question things again, and skip past corrupt pastors and priests to return to the source. I still won't go into a church as they define it, but I found my faith again after this.

My mother always tells me there is a difference between being religious and actually having a relationship with God. when you have a relationship with him it doesn't matter what others think, your confidence will be in him and you knowing the truth. @@nasyabugg8240 Exactly. Growing up I didn't see that. I had to come to it "the hard way", I tried to deny my faith, but it called me back. This song was the pivotal moment that helped me understand that. It was the song of doubting, but it was like the doubts I had at that age - and then as the musical went on from there, I found my path. And being a 'rock musical' made it "easy to listen to and open myself up to" at that age.

@@dennisthemenace3695 Look at the words of the inidividual mystics - be it Yeshua (Jesus), Mohammed, Shakyamuni (Buddha), Lao Tzu, or whoever. Their words are often extremely different than what the religions based around them proclaim - and often even out of step with the rest of the book's they are featured in. Jesus' words for example are radically different from anything anyone else says in the Bible. Jesus was all about love and forgiveness and he took in many people who were seen as 'on the wrong side of sexual politics' of the day. The only people Jesus had trouble with was those we would today describe as Capitalists. He was very harsh towards anyone motivated by money / greed.
- When you look to the teachings of the actual teachers, around the world they seem to often repeat a lot of the message of coming together in love / peace, being less judgmental, and seeing the divine in everything around us.

I don't remember why, but in probably 1996 or so I was in the Air Force and checked this movie out of the base library. And from the moment I heard Carl singing this song (which is right at the beginning) I was absolutely floored and hooked.
This is definitely one of the best introductions to a film that I have ever seen. Beautifully filmed. And the music? Beyond compare.

Listening to the Blu-ray audio commentary with Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley they mention that even though the story is about Jesus, it’s all told from Judas’ point of view. That’s what makes it work as a rock opera. And Carl Anderson must have understood and embraced that. It’s really a magnificent performance.

Such dred in this opening scene. The music makes the mood. Guitar is so amazing as it grows in volume and emotion. The pose Judas poses on the rock is iconic like a gargoyle/angel overlooking the scene and knowing how this story will end. A voice screaming in the desert.

What an amazing performance! Anderson captures the sincere love, passion, and growing angst while providing a vocal tour de force. And talk about grabbing the audience by the throat and never letting go, within mere seconds the viewer knows they are going to experience something transfixing and transformative. The mixture of raw, barren authentic scenery with bright colors and a youthful cast showcases the tension unique to cinematic and chronological anomalies that command the entire film. One of my favorites is the scene of poor Judas being chased by the industrial monster armed tanks that suddenly appear out of nowhere in the desert. WoW! Filmed amidst the background of the then recent1967 Six Day War followed by the Yom Kippur War OF 1973, the essence of ongoing human conflict is brought home.
Carl Anderson was amazing! So powerful & passionate. He helped us see a man who was deeply afraid - for his people and for his teacher & his mission.
And thus, frustrated & angry.
He thought he was the only smart & practical one while others had "too much heaven on their mind".
When he sings "We are occupied; have you forgotten how put down we are? And they'll crush us if we go too far," Judas reflects the thinking of many people who've lived under brutal military occupation for several years. (I was growing up under martial law in the 60s & 70s)
TJSS was brilliantly written & scored. And Carl Anderson was perfectly cast. Thank you to all inbolved in its creation and all the various productions

It has all been said a million times but here's another one - they were ALL superlative. Magnificent performances from each and every single person in this film. Carl's, though, is stunningly beautiful (as is Ted's Gethsemane).
I have seen JCS live twice, once on the 50th anniversary and once several years before, the Judas' don't come close..... what a Talent, Carl Anderson. A joy to be able to listen to his vocals whenever I need that vocal dose of Faith.

Back in the 70s and early 80s this movie played on Easter Sunday along with Godspell. Great memories.
I've never been into this work and never seen it in any form but I went to see the stage show for the first time last night in a sold out regional theatre because one of my young relatives was one of the cast. I don't know what I was expecting but I certainly wasn't expecting an extremely engaging and thematically rather dark progressive rock opera!! I can now see why it still remains so massively popular even after 50 years.
I think this whole production could not be topped. Some things are just perfect the first time around 🥇

They were ALL phenomenal...it still gives me chills to watch it, the music, the scenery, the story. My faith is restored every time I watch the movie. Amazing 🙏❤️

@@melgibson1284 As an atheist, I disagree. Super controversial at the time for sure (I was born about 8 years before the movie was made but it didn't cross my radar until I was a teenager many years later). I'm from Ireland where there were protests outside cinemas from some people who considered it blasphemy. This is not surprising as Ireland was an UBER CATHOLIC country at the time. Apparently the protests died away when Vatican radio started playing some of the tracks (who knew!). I think the musical tries to humanise Christ and the people around him. I have no idea if the man existed and I certainly don't consider him God, but his/the teachings were pretty epic nonethless (unlike the old testament, which American "Christian" fundamentalists seem to love so much ).

this intro riff is sooo sick.
I always was stuck by how he said “we are occupied” on the inhale almost whispering like he doesn’t want others to hear it. Like even tho he’s by himself and in his mind Jesus is leading them to ruin, he is Still playing the part he believes Christ can deliver them. And what’s even more astonishing is he’s right. In order for there to be a Jesus the physical human form has to end at the cross. As a kid hearing the story of Christ at first like most I hated Judas, my mom showed me this and I instantly and ever since have had such a profound empathy for him. He was at Jesus right up into the events of the arrest trial execution. The grief of his death made him take his own life. This movie gave me the empathy for Judas Christ would of wanted me to have. Carl Andersen was born for that role and no one I’ve ever seen has even came close.
saw this as a kid. been checking out a few later performances. anderson, neeley, and elliman. never got better.
Watch this fabulous movie often since it was new on the big screen and still greatly moved by it every time

amazing and i really hope he enjoyed performing this because i would have loved this. not only does he get to sing the best song of this musical, he is also in the best location of any musical i have ever seen. blues skies, sun and sand/rocks. yes please!
