"I Don't Know How to Love Him" is a song from the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar written by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics), a torch ballad sung by the character of Mary Magdalene who in Jesus Christ Superstar is presented as bearing an unrequited love for the title character. The song has been much recorded with "I Don't Know How to Love Him" long being unique for having two versions concurrently in the Top 30 of the Hot 100 chart in Billboard magazine, specifically those recorded by Helen Reddy and Yvonne Elliman.

When I was 10 yrs oldold my mom took me to the theater to see this movie 13 times! I was obsessed. I left such an indelible impression on me that I’ve never forgotten. It was my first real exposure to the message of Christ and I’ve leaned on Him ever since. My grandfather thought it was a disrespectful dirty hippie movie. 😂

i totally agree. not a bad song in the whole song. i've been listening to JCS since it came out (1970/71) and i never get tired of it, ever. and i cannot help but crying most of the way through it - it's that moving still. glad to know there are others out there that have it in their hearts.

Please understand it's Mary Magdalene that this movie was talking. Really a bouts from what I gather. She's there in this movie covering up our savior but she's pouring out her heart to him while he's sleeping. I know that this is a mythical movie. It's not the real thing. What Jesus is and what he wants us to know about him. He really came to save us. And to redeem us from our sins. This is what I truly know about who and what Jesus is but I fell in love with the movie. I fell in love with the song because the song says let us know how we must fear him. But at the same time he wants us to know who he is. He said when you look at the father and you look at me, We Are One. I know that Jesus came in the replication of God. The father to save us and to redeem us from ours. This is what I know I love Jesus. I want him to save my soul from my sins. I don't know about anyone else. I only know about me and what I know him to do for me. He changed me, renewed me to become one of his heirs. I know that because of what he is in my heart. Strive every day to try to stay focused on praising its holy d*** I've tried with all my being to know that he is the greatest superstar that ever came into my life. This is what I know. I understand what you are saying but I disagree. Before Jesus resurrection, Mary nor any of the disples knew this for they were expecting an earthy king. From Mary's viewpoint at this time she questioned if Jesus was a God or a man. The musical is written from the viewpoint of the characters before they knew Jesus was God. So it is appropriate for Mary to have these questions about who Jesus was.
In addition, this is a question many people still have. This is an appriate question for them until the Holy Spirit speaks to them.

I can offer this reply to yours: You could be right in your criticism of my reply, or you might be wrong.
I have to disagree. The question is not who Jesus realized who he was or even who he was. The question is who did Mary think he was. We have very little reliable information about this that we can definitely answer this question. The disples were expecting an earthly king. Mary being one of Jesus followers probably had similar expectations. Mary anointing and kissing Jesus' feet, suggests that she had sexual interests. We don't know for sure. As long as we keep our not knowing in mind I believe there is some value into looking at what these Bible characters felt and there motivations. By doing so, we humanize these characters. We can realize they are people just like us. The song "I don't know how to love him" does this. It humanizes Mary. We can relate to her. Now, was this how Mary actually felt. I doubt it.
However, stating that Mary knew who Jesus was is not biblical. She did not know it while Jesus was on the cross. She did not know it when meeting Jesus after the resurrection. How could she know I before Jesus death or resurrection.
