Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus' following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

Norman Jewison, the director, has talked about how when they were in the casting phase and were looking for the person to place Judas, they had auditioned 4 or 5 other men before Carl Anderson came along. He loved Carl's audition. He was worried though that if he cast Carl as Judas, it would be depicting white people as the Savior, and black people as the betrayers, since Ted Neely, who plays Jesus, is white. And Carl Anderson, who plays Judas, is black. So he was reluctant to cast Carl. But he ultimately came to the conclusion that he would not be able to live with himself if he did not cast Carl Anderson to play Judas because Carl gave the best audition out of everyone and was the best person to play Judas. So that it was he did. I am so glad he did, because Carl Anderson gave the best version of Judas in JCS history.
I can see that concern. The answer, truly, is just listen to the man sing. The role of Judas clearly had the best songs and the power and emotion in Carl's voice made him the right choice.

We did this when I was in junior high in 1977 with an all blind cast. I played Judas. We also did "Grease". I was Danny in that.

I saw this movie in the theaters with my parents. I was just a kid but it left a lasting impression on me. No other actor portraying Judas can match this performance. It still gives me chills.

Lets face it, the 1970's was when human coolness reached it's zenith. Such cool people created the best musicals ever. Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, Godspell, and probably a few I'm forgetting.
So glad my childhood and teen years took place in the 1970's. I loved all the great weed, the hippies, the easy sexuality, and the hopefulness of the youth who thought they could change the world into a peaceful loving place. They were wrong, but it was cool while it lasted.

Over decades, I was lucky enough to see Neeley and Anderson preform together and the see Jesus Christ Superstar yeas later. One time with Ted Neeley and one time with Carl Anderson. As to everything else you mentioned, I have Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, and Godspell either on musical disc or video.

I have always wished I'd seen this in the cinema. My Father did so in the early seventies. He said that when it came to this number, the atmosphere in the theatre was electric. Hairs on the back of your neck stuff - the spirit of Judas descending on a cross, suspended from a crane. Carl Anderson is magnificent here. Should have won the Oscar, in my opinion.

There’s a lot of ways to interpret this song. I’m fascinated by the ending in this version. The visual of Jesus, beaten and tired from carrying the cross, Mary crying at his impending death, cut with Judas jamming out asking if he really meant to do all this. Was it worth it? Is this really part of the plan? No good answers but it’s a hell of a great representation of this song
Gamer's get it. The various Deities and Pantheons of that age often tortured, murdered, and abused humans. The old testament is filled with the slaughter of those who displeased various deities... Christ put ALL his skill points in healing and resurrection. The very worst the Romans, The Sadducees, the Gods could toss at Christ was DEATH on a Cross... Welp, He took it like a real champ and popped right back up 3 days later.

A lot to read into Judas' expression at 1:52
as much as this is a cheesy 1970s rock ballad with disco dancers, the sheer look of confusion and hurt on Judas' face cuts through it all and humanizes this story of asking difficult questions.
If you add in the enterpretation that Carl is actually singing as the Devil in this number, that gives it a whole new level as well. Remember, Lucifer rebelled against god's plan and suffered for it (he suffers still). He recognizes that same suffering in Jesus, yet Jesus followed the plan. It stands to reason that Lucifer would feel confusion and hurt when witnessing this. What is it all for? Why do we suffer?
The Power of Ressurection is Total Victory over both the Temple, and the Empire. Proving the Pharisees belief in ressurection is correct, and proving the end of the Empire... Shortly after Christ rose from the dead, Every pantheon was in trouble, the polytheistic religions were defeated.
Sadly, many came to a brutal and violent end... Christ dissolved the mythologies and religions of his time, by replacing them with Empathology.

The scene begins with a shot of Jesus with his scourged back to the camera, then dissolves to a shot of him in his white garb, turning to the camera, and the instrumental overture is almost triumphant. I remember the first time I watched this movie as a kid (thanks, Mom) and interpreted the scene as Heaven getting ready for Christ to fulfill his destiny and come home...there's just one question left to be asked first.
“Did you mean to die like that?
Was that a mistake?
Or did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?”
No matter who you think Jesus was, he died for us all. Breaks my heart and fills it at once.
growing up, Jesus Christ Superstar was pretty heavily joked about. until recently, I wasn't really into musicals either, so I never really looked into it.
I heard Ian Gillian sing Gethsemane and decided to look a bit into it; hearing Heaven on Their Minds, Gethsemane with Ted Neeley, and this, it's all truly something really special. Carl Anderson is such an insane talent. seeing him lowered from that chain with that insane bassline and funk backdrop to deliver this performance never fails to spark something in me.
the camp, the glitz, the nerve to pull this off while singing about Jesus Christ from the perspective of Judas and showing images of his crucifixtion... not enough words to describe how amazing I find this.
This scene is so hard. I love the first part with the questions, Why did you let things get so out of hand? and Why did you pick such a strange time in a strange land?...Do you think you are what they say you are? but as Jesus struggles to get up the hill with the cross... hurts my heart so much.
I think this entire play must have been very hard to play a character.

Oh wow! Me too! Well, I didn’t play Judas- I was Mary Magdalene in my 8th grade (at Catholic school) production of it. We had a cool old hippy teacher who let us do it as our annual Passion Play at Eastertime.
Judas was never the bad guy. He was rightfully concerned, and his worst fears were warranted.

I always thought the whole musical kinda pointed out that Jesus was just an ordinary man. This song literally asks, why would the son of God appear in a weird village in a place where there were messiahs and prophets dropping out of every corner, but avoid appearing in front of any video recording equipment

this is the best of the best scene of all time. the lead and the 3 back ground singers and the dancers it was perfect and touching.
2:25 is such an amazing shot in my eyes. There’s so much imagery and representation. The sun is representing God and the hill top is death. Jesus is marching with the cross to God while facing certain death and God is there watching from afar. It’s kinda like a “call of light” or “light of life” or “follow the light” moment.
Why can't we see and hear the piece til the end? The end is AMAZING! If you want people to buy let them hear it! I own the movie several times over! I have seen the production on Broadway, and Ted Neeley's touring company twice! I have seen Carl Anderson on stage and he got better as he aged. I can't play the disc on my computer. It won't work BUT I OWN IT! I have paid more times than you can count for this production. Why are you cutting the end off? Those who have not see this production have NO IDEA how great Carl Anderson, and the original cast really are - THANKS TO YOU - AND YOUR NEED FOR PROFIT! THEY NEVER WILL! God help you and Jesus Christ too!

My friends and I used to have a theory that it was actually a post apocalyptic future and that this was all being performed by people who had discovered certain lost relics from before the End; a Bible, some 70’s music collections and imagery, and a broadway performance recording of some kind.😆🤣😆🤣
@@allthingsnerd.4484 The movie opens with the actors coming off of a bus and putting on their costumes. It ends with them going back on the bus and leaving. So yeah, it's supposed to be actors acting out a Passion Play within the movie.
Saw this movie in the theatre was I was about 10 years old. I've seen it numerous times since then and have the albums and cds. Know every word of the entire movie by heart.
I bought the original vinyl album in 1970 ( I've still got it), and saw the film when it came out in 1973.
I like that Judas was apparently in his heaven with a harem of beautiful angels. He was part of God's plan after all and served well. I saw the play as a middle-schooler when it first came out and still have some of the songs playing in my head from time to time. It's a masterpiece and I love it.
Fitsnwellnwith thr Gosple of Judas where Jesus told Judas he isntivign him thr most important chores, to release his if "his clothing" to the plan could be completed. Obviously this was not written by Judas, and thr Gospel of Juadas was not found until long after this move was finished yet it fits. Judas was not the evil betrayer. He was given three chore to betray Jesus so he could be crucified. What woukd have happened if Jeus had escaped and lived a nice long life and married Mary Magdalene, had kids, and died line a regular person? Thr Last Temptation of Christ delved into that scenario.
Judas in this song isn't Judas but a Representation of the modern Agnostic and even those who is struggling with Faith with reference to mass Communations and Mohammed who was born centuries after Jesus died.

Dude, if you love this song then you should watch the movie from start to finish. At the time it was in my opinion one of the best musicals of the seventies. Also, it's one of the best rock operas when doing rock opera a thing. Rock operas were popular during the sixties and ended in the early to mid seventies. Unfortunately they didn't last long cause they were expensive to make.

We did Jesus Christ superstar In my church my Jr yr of high school that's my youth group put it on and I played the part of Jesus yes this is a very powerful movie and an even more powerful play when its put on by 14-16 yr old kids this was 1982 and we did it for Easter just 1 1\2 wks later I left for my yr with up with people tour to Europe ,Italy ,& Israel so I got see some of the places Jesus walked and talked it was a fun yr to be alive and to be a teenager

I was 20 years old when this came out. The broadway cast came to my community college and did some songs from it. It was one my favorite movies at the time and I liked it better than some of the other stage productions I saw.

Ted Neely perfectly captures the anguish, trepidation, doubt, even anger.
Jesus the man in conflict with what he understands to be his calling & purpose.
It's this love of life & reluctance to die that makes his submission a true SACRIFICE
And all the more precious a gift.

No apologies: this remains the best interpretation of Rice and Lloyd-Webber's material, in part because it was made at the time of the piece's creation and thus is firmly lodged aesthetically and thematically in the sensibilities of the time. This doesn't mean more recent 'concept' remounts are uninteresting, just more detached from the material; none seems as close as this, as subtle, as ideologically open ended and, in some cases, provocative [i.e.; the decision to shoot in Israel and Jordan utilizing local military hardware in the months before the Yom Kippur War] - and as sexually ambiguous [no contemporary self-conscious and self-interested gender bending, non-binary, draggy, rhetorical clap trap can come close to the lighthearted casual ease of the pansexuality in this version]. To call the scene 'cheesy' is to grossly misinterpret the time - this was the age of glam rock: chrome, lurex, mylar, fringe, sequins, beads, lycra, plunging v-necklines, backlighting and lens flare...the sheer glitter of this number - a riff on the stadium rock concerts of the time - beats the sullen '50 shades of khaki' paramiltarism of more recent versions in spades.

I agree 100% This is the time period when you can picture a group of people driving out into the desert to find answers to questions they're earnestly asking. Every modern production of this musical comes off as cynical.

I imagine that’s the point: no earthly person can be our savior, nor can any earthly power save us from ourselves. Even most of those that recognize Jesus as someone important are only following him for their own worldly benefit (fame, coolness).
With this understanding of the story, I find every telling to be cynical. Humanizing Jesus and Judas only makes it more heartbreaking.
