Just finished icing a 4 tier wedding cake for my son's wedding. Have been making cakes for years, but needed confirmation that I was doing it right so sat down witha cup of tea and watched this. Many thanks for keeping me sane
To all of you who are freaking out about the non-edible extras...traditionally the bride and groom cut the cake for the pictures and afterward the cake is taken to the back or is cut by the hotel/venue staff that is in charge of removing the non edible features and THEN it is taken back to the room and served. Unless you are having a venue which does not have a staff to do this, all you have to do is take the ribbon off. It's not a big deal. IF you wanted all edible ribbon/pendants/flowers, it would be much more costly. Lets just appreciate the tutorial without being so judgy :)
A lot of the comments are kind of negative. Beauty is so subjective. For someone who is on the lower budget scale, this wedding cake is perfect. Obviously it doesn't have a million edible flowers or some kind of amazing theme because it's simple. I have been to different weddings and I have seen some ugly wedding cakes. This one is definitely nice compared to those. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I'm so making my own wedding cake! :D I'm going to do a half chocolate round the back and do the other half like this (without the silver food colouring stuff... tempting fate with that...). I want to practice and make a Christmas cake like this ^^ put some polar bears on top :)
I bet she just made it sound easy, but if I were to do this I would fail miserably. Not to mention you need a lot of materials to make this happen and there is no room for mistake on a wedding cake.
Being a cake decorator myself this tutorial was spot on and very detailed and precise. If you have never done a cake in your life, then it would be difficult to attempt a wedding cake for a first attempt.
The cake she demonstrated does not need a lot of tools or materials. She didn't even put roses or gumpaste flowers so that's half of the difficulty reduced already. Try it first and then comment. You may be surprised
Of course you could always make an edible decoration and edible ribbon for this, but that would use more advanced techniques: I wanted to show how anyone can make something really beautiful very simply! The weight of the cake is supported by wooden dowels and you can see in the video how they are applied. Thanks for all your comments and have a wonderful Christmas. Love Jane x
Hello Jane, how are you?,are you doing any more acting?your wedding cake is beautiful, are you still in your shop as much?,you are so talented, like I've said before, everything you touch turns to gold.
BEAUTIFUL AND IN FACT EASY TO DO! I HAVE BEEN MAKING CAKES FOR OVER 7 YRS, AND THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, EASIEST FONDANT CAKE I HAVE EVER MADE THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO! BRAVO JANE!!! AND THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOUR VIDEO!!
Just responding to sushimama's comment about the decoration: it is in fact quite a heavy, metal brooch and very beautiful in 'real life'. The video probably doesn't do it justice Best wishes Jane x
To answer Showgirl Lola's beautifully posed question: you remove the f***ing ribbons before you cut the cake. How stupid of me not to include that instruction... Or, of course you could use edible ribbon, either bought or home-made from strips of roll-out icing. But ordinary ribbon is very traditional on wedding cakes. Best Jane
I remember watching this when I was little, just watching it is so satisfying
