I saw a horrible comment on here where someone said everyone and their dog is singing at the Met Now. That is the most stuck up comment to say about the people who work hard to get to sing at the Met. I gather it hasn't been easy for them. Who ever made that comment obviously has nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. If anything we should be more encouraging and supportive. That's why many people have this perception that opera is only for stuck up people. Opera is for everyone. And if people are encouragedthen it will allow spaces for people to come forward and share their skill and develop it. Not bring them down and making them feel less than.

Two contraltos. I understand, everyone is very happy if able to hear a real contralto not a mezzo who sing the contralto roles.

Mrs Slack made her Met debut in 2006 with singing the title role in Luisa Miller. She is now doing a bunch of Serenas, Toscas, Wagner etc. Mrs Arwady debuted at the Met with singing Pasqualita in Doctor Atomic in 2008. She also sang a few Erdas in the ring cycle and Marquise in Le Fille du Regiment. Ms Wilson made her debut at the Met in 2014 as Aida and she recently reprised the role at the Met. Other singers do similar things as well.

Sorry, but that title will always belong to La Scala, followed closely (or tied) with La Fenice. The Met (used) to fall in line then around # 3 or 4. Of course each house has had major artistic decline - so you basically must remove present bais and use historical ranking

SINGING is NO LONGER in EVIDENCE, LISTEN to KIRSTEN FLAGSTAD / ELIZABETH RETHBERG / LINA PAGLIUGHI / ELEANOR STEBER / BENIAMINO GIGLI / JUSSI BJORLING / SERGEI LEMESHEV / GEORGES THILL / HANS HOTTER / DOROTHY MAYNOR / HINA SPANI / APOLLO GRANFORTE / PACETTI / LISTEN TO THEM!

Their voices are exceedingly beautiful. However, singing pupils should be taught how to take better care of their physical shape. Diet, exercise and routine should be included in their formation as a whole artist.

Very wrong! For all the reasons in the world they should loose weight. It's about their health in the first place, not their physical appearance. Loosing weight does not affect the voice or affects it but positively (better breathing, lower blood pressure, stronger immune system to fight/prevent the infections etc). It's a stupid myth this with loosing weight=loosing voice. A totally wrong concept, not proven scientifically, and an excuse for the singer to overeat.

    • @alinazamfir7679

+Henry Carey please explain me scientifically how weight loss negatively affects the voice. And also how can these obese singers can be healthy. A!!! They didn't develop diabetes yet and their cholesterol level is not yet 400 and their blood pressure not yet 180. Yes. That's possible because they are very young. But they ARE NOT healthy!
