This is still a favorite movie of preschoolers and kindergarteners. And dads/grandpas who either like NASCAR or reminisce about Route 66. It doesn't try to revolutionize anything about animation, but it's a textbook example of how to take a familiar story template and apply it to a new context, flesh out the characters, and give it broad appeal. All the story pieces are in the right place and have space to breathe. I've always had a soft spot for this one. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hudson Motors Co. dominated NASCAR in the Early 1950s (specifically 1952-'54) with the Twin-H 6cyl Hornets. I'm an old Sports Car Club of America race worker. Ignored this film for years because I heard it was NASCAR-centric. Big mistake on my part. My daughter brought over the DVD on a visitation weekend, and I spent most of it saying, "Holy S! that's really (real racing guy)!!" The announcers, some of the race cars, I was just blown away. That scene with McQueen (named after the actor, Steve was also a racer) chasing Sally down the windy road brought tears to my eyes..I've actually done something like that on a 'track day' where people are allowed to drive their street cars on the race track. To 'car people', it's like dancing with someone you love. Oh, and the yellow flag on an oval means 'accident - slow down'. IIRC, all flags are waved on ovals. For sportscars, if displayed motionless it means "do not pass anyone", displayed waving it means "you may have to avoid something". And the little car in front of the race cars is called a Pace Car in the US, and Safety Car elsewhere. RIP Paul Newman..he was a member of my Club. The rule was only talk about racing (he'd talk your ear off)..the movies were his 'day job' and he didn't want to be bothered with it. He was actually good at it, won four National Amateur Championships and placed 2nd in the 24hr race at Le Mans one time.

What I love most about Cars is that despite the fact this is a universe where everyone is a car and that it highlights Lightning McQueen’s racing career, more than anything this is a story that so painfully well mirrors the stories of a lot of real life small towns (along Route 66.. but can also be extended to just about anywhere) that have been forgotten over time and about just how important small towns like Radiator Springs and small local businesses are who struggle to stay afloat among the superhighways and mega corporations.

This movie is dedicated to Joe Ranft, who sadly passed away during the production in 2005 in a (tradgically irony) car accident. He and his firends were riding in Ranft's car when Elegba Earl, who was driving the car, lost control over it and crashed through a guard rail and went into the mouth of Narvarro River. Ranft and Earl were killed instantly in the impact while their friend Eric Frierson survived and got out through the sun roof. Ranft was the co-director of Cars and voices Red and Peterbilt. His memory was also decidated in Tim Burton's Copse Bride.
Joe Ranft was the storyboard artist and story man of many Disney Animation films of the late 80's and early 90's such as The Little Mermaid and Beauty and The Beast and the Pixar films Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc, plus The Brave Little Toaster, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. He also voiced many characters like Elmo St. Peters and the clown in Brave Little Toaster, Igor in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lenny in Toy Story, Heimlich and a fly in A Bug's Life, Wheezy in Toys Tory 2 (he also reprised as Heimligh in the credits blooopers), Pete "Claws" Ward in Monsters, Inc. (In the same movie, one of the scarers has the surname Ranft as a referee to him) and Jacques in Finding Nemo (his brother Jerome took over voiding him in Finding Dory).

So my dad had to drive her home to pee and then drive her back to the movie so they missed like 30 minutes of it. One of my dads favorite stories to tell from when we were younger lol. Also would like to point out that The King is actually based off (and voiced by) number 43 Richard Petty! As a big (but new) F1 fan, hearing Michael Schumacher at the end was so emotional. But also a few other F1 drivers have voiced some of the cars in the later movies (eg. Lewis Hamilton as himself, or Sebastian Vettel as Sebastian Schnell(German for fast), or Fernando Alonso as a assistant something (I don’t remember right now) in the Cars 3 movie) and like some comments already mentioned quite a few NASCAR drivers/legends have voiced characters in the movie franchise. So it’s really cool rewatching this movie, now knowing how much of racing and it’s history and different series really live in this movie.

The restaurant is still there since the truckers still stop by there to eat, as well as the workers from the quarry next to it, but the candy shop that I always went to to buy candy closed down. I think I would give "A Bug's Life" the outcast award, although I do like it a lot. I actually should rewatch it. It's been more than a minute since I've seen it.

this movie is about enjoying the small stuff and most importantly enjoy life while you're still alive. Lightning had to learn that the hardway because he was spoiled and obnoxious until he arrived in Radiator Springs

Lightning making it through the smoky wreck is a bery subtle nod to Jeff Gordon as a driver.
All hell could break loose, and the majority of the time you'd see him come through it.

That Guido pit stop was one of the most epic scenes ever!

Love watching your reactions, Natalie! As someone also relatively indifferent to cars, this movie definitely surprised me as well back in the day. I also got to finally go out West and drive bits of Route 66 last year and it made this movie hit so much harder.
Would love to see you react to another wholesome and fun movie called That Thing You Do! Tom Hanks’s directorial debut in the 90’s, it’s so fun and not many reactors do it. Please and thank you!

I loved the song Find Yourself in the end credits. It's one of those songs that hits hard for someone that, maybe, never knew what home was.

And part 2 is awesome, too. I haven't seen part 3 yet, so I can't speak to that, but part 2 is awesome, too.

In the italian dubbing to adapt the issue of having Italian speaking characters, they gave Luigi a strong accent from Emilia, while Guido speaks a very tight (and hard to understand) dialect from Modena. Guido's italian voice actor is Alex Zanardi, an ex racer who got in a terrible accident that made him lose his legs in 2001, and then got into paralympic racing on handbikes. Unfortunately he was in another terrible accident in 2020 that involved his head and we barely had any news about him since, much like it happened with Schumacher 😔
