- Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was both an internationally renowned actor and singer and an activist for civil rights. Born in Princeton, he attended Rutgers University where he was a football All-American and the class valedictorian. He went on to Columbia Law before beginning his acting career. He starred in "Othello" on Broadway and movies including "Showboat" and "Emperor Jones." Robeson stood up for workers and the oppressed, and embraced sometimes unpopular causes such as the Spanish Civil War. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era, and his career never fully recovered.
"It Happened Here: New Jersey" is a production of Kean University, in partnership with the New Jersey Historical Commission. The series is narrated by Willie Geist. President Roosevelt's response to Robeson that it wasn't the right time is a disgrace. Roosevelt did many great things for many people but unfortunately African Americans weren't one of them. Ironically Eleanor Roosevelt was a great leader in all matters concerning civil rights. Maybe she should have been President, not Franklin D. The time is now in all matters concerning the rights and dignity of all men. Besides being the most gifted individual in human history, Robeson stood even taller by sacrificing his well being for a greater cause. Forget the 20th century, Robeson was the greatest man in any century. Flawed but unbowed in the human struggle.
Based on the video above, the president was Truman, not Roosevelt. Otherwise, like the comments.
