Today we honor the life and legacy of the legendary Paul Robeson. Robeson was a Renaissance man who was not only an accomplished singer, actor, and athlete but also a passionate advocate for civil rights and social justice.
Born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1898, Robeson grew up in a family of educators and activists. He went on to become one of the most famous and influential performers of his time, known for his powerful baritone voice and his unforgettable performances of "Ol' Man River" and other classic songs.
Throughout his career, Robeson used his platform to speak out against racial injustice and to promote the cause of equality and freedom. He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and a vocal critic of colonialism, apartheid, and other forms of oppression.
Despite facing fierce opposition and blacklisting from the government during the Red Scare of the 1950s, Robeson remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to tour and perform worldwide. He remains an inspiration to activists and artists alike, and his contributions to the arts and social justice continue to be celebrated and remembered.
So let's take a moment to honor the life and legacy of Paul Robeson and to recognize the countless other performers and activists who have used their talents and their voices to make a difference in the world. He is still loved by us in Russia.
He was one of the few that saw us as equals and admired our leaders.
Thank you for covering this man.
He's a legend world wide to this day
I respect Eastern Europeans.
There is a rumor going around that his/Uta Hagen's goddaughter is an Antifa and AntiMajdan and the Donbass Rebel Queen. People say she even wrote a couple of songs about Donbass. 🤣
I think KGB poisoned Paul back in 1961 after he had angered Khrushchev. He fell ill after leaving Soviet Union and had never recovered
No. Goddaddy and Paul Robeson, Jr had no falling out with Khruschev. He never understood what a total scumbag Khruschev was. No, I'm with my uncle and the rest of the Robeson clan- Paul Robeson was killed by the CIA. Same as Pablo Neruda and same as my mother in 2014. " I ACCUSE! "
Thank you so much for this! There is a lovely mural of Paul in Philadelphia, and one of the homes in which he lived is nearby.
He left behind a legacy that is hard to surpass!
What a great man. My dad sang ol man river
He sang in Birmingham 2 UK Birmingham and knew my grandad and sang at his funeral 2 !A🥰
I recommend reading "Black on Red" by Robert Robinson, Chapter 26. It's a story of meeting Paul Robeson in Soviet Russia during his concerts. I came to believe the Soviets poisoned Paul after he got Khrushchev pissed by asking questions about disappearance of his Jewish friends.
😮 I knew he'd sung Ol'Man River in Showboat and had been blacklisted, but didn't know any of that other stuff. 20 languages! All American twice! Valedictorian! Amazing😮
amazing
👏👏👏👏👏
♡♡♡♡♡
Here is an obscure fact: they've named a tomato after him in Russia.
Yes!! 🍅
And a tanker I believe.
The most amazing human being in my opinion. I made sure to teach my daughter about him so that his memory will never fade.
Thank you so much.
When is Steve McQueen going to give us the movie about Paul Robeson that The Guardian talked about 9 years ago?
eh i be in it as my granny ! A
Never. Ain't gonna happen- especially now. Goddaddy was Antifa and the Americans and the Brits are in bed with the Ukrainian Nazis. Can you imagine the scandal if I decide to show up at the premier ? The Donbass Rebel Queen, the author of at least two songs and tons of poetry about Donbass, Antifa and AntiMajdan since 2014??? Not that I would ever do this to Susan.
But it doesn't mean that Steve and yours truly can't collaborate on a script of some sort. I would kill to be able to do a movie about passing or say a ghost story about a silly White girl who's enamored by the beauty of a plantation and decides to hold her wedding or her birthday party there.
I'm still waiting for this!! He talked excitedly about it.....then nothing. I wish someone would take this on. He needs to be rediscovered by generations of people from the 50s onwards who (criminally) know nothing about him.
I am a massive Paul Robeson fan and I am the proud owner of his book Here I Stand. Have you done anything about the actor Noble Johnson?
You may want to read Chapter 26 in Black on Red book by Robert Robinson. It's about Paul's concerts in Soviet Russia
What's a bunny's favorite kind of music?
Hip hop!
