    The only issue I have with Perry and a fair number of other builders in Oz - they use majority non Australian woods. We have amazingly stable Aussie woods that are unique, I really wish he had built more of his reputation on our timber. Totally get its a custom shop/customer wants etc but we need to be servicing our timber suppliers better if we want real innovation in the guitar world.

    • @perryormsby9298
      @perryormsby9298 Před 2 lety +39

      We used to use a lot of Tasmanian Blackwood. I got tired of having to buy it years in advance because it was never dried properly.
      Not to mention it was never really available in sizes over 150mm. We’d buy every piece we could get.
      It’s harder on tools, so takes a little longer to build with.
      And then there is the weight.
      We still offer it. We never get asked for it. It costs more, but that’s not a big factor.
      I don’t care which timbers we use, but I’m going to build guitars that can sell easier, take less time, and easier to work with.
      About the only time we use TB now is if it’s a non customer build.
      Our market is 82% international. Those guys don’t care about Aussie woods.

      @@perryormsby9298 Perry thanks for taking the time to answer personally. Mate, firstly I get you are running a business and you have to go where the market is, secondly I fully understand drying and supply as I’m a maker too. My comment though is around innovation, ie making something others aren’t. Yes the Novak fan system is amazing but others use it too. Before Warwick started using Wenge it was a lowly underfoot timber for parquet flooring! My point is this, yes many customers choose the standards like maple, mahogany and the variations but it would be wonderful to see an electric maker pushing our woods as unique like maton do and working with suppliers to get something that was truly Australian rather than made in Australia with imports. No offense meant just a desire to see our wonderful woods shine - literally.

      @@barretprivateer8768 Good for you Sir. Don't be put off by Tasmanian Blackwoods weight Its how you use it - as a neck wood it flames beautifully and it also is a great cap wood as is Red Cedar and Sassafras. For bodies Queensland maple is wonderful and very much like Alder and our Ashes are top drawer. Gidgee works well and can be a good alternative to Ebony for hardness. Silky oak looks like snakewood etc, etc

    This is such an interesting, comprehensive interview about the guitar business and building guitars. I just learned a lot about the man behind Ornsby Guitars that I never knew, and I appreciate that you asked more about him so we can get a little insight about how he built his business and why he made certain decisions. You asked very pointed questions, and I appreciate that Perry was willing to answer things about guitar factories and the general guitar business that I’ve never heard anyone else openly address.
    I’d love to hear more about the different OEM factories out there, whether brands are worried about their ideas and designs getting copied/stolen when they use OEM factories rather than hiring and training employees to build the guitars themselves.
    Thanks for this video!

    • @ORMSBYGUITARSAUS
      @ORMSBYGUITARSAUS Před 2 lety +3

      I think it’s less of a worry in contracting a factory to build oem designs for you, than it is having some random Chinese factory stealing designs.
      We are $18k into a court case over trademark squatters in China. They obviously saw our US trademarks get published and within days applied for one in China. We also applied a few days later but they were first.
      The trade show Music China had multiple copies on display. I personally handed out cease and desist letters to each company. All but one immediately removed products and we’ve not seen them ever use our designs again. One literally shook my hand and thanked me for coming up with so many ideas that they are going to steal. 🤷‍♂️

    • @MashaT22
      @MashaT22 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ORMSBYGUITARSAUS wow, it takes a lot of balls to give such a backhanded “compliment” to the legit copyright holders’ CEO, to say the least. 😱🤦🏼‍♀️ Well, at least you stopped most of the companies who were going to produce Ormsby bootlegs. I bet it made an impression that you were the one to personally hand out those letters instead of a random lawyer. The sad part is that those brands just move on to steal numerous other brands’ ideas. I am sure it is extremely expensive, time consuming and frustrating, to constantly have to fight against copyrighted products.
      However, you make a good point that it’s less of a concern when you contract a company to build for you. Do you think contracted companies sell information to random factories, though? I mean, some stolen designs seem to hit the market very quickly - often well before the legit brand’s own items hit retail. It happens not just in the guitar world, but virtually every type of product. I say this because I’ve seen this scenario occur with Kickstarters where an American startup is still in the development and/or pre-production phase working alongside contracted manufacturers from overseas. Ultimately, the startup itself and/or backers discover knockoffs being sold on Alibaba, Wish, eBay, Amazon, and similar sites well before the trigger has been hit on manufacturing or just as manufacturing begins. That cannot be a coincidence. There’s obviously not way to prove that the contracted manufacturer passed along info to other factories, but some of the copies are way too close to the original designs - even in cases where crucial details were blurred in photos or not shown at all when Kickstarter updates were posted to backers. It is very possible that they took a stab at making these products on their own, but the copies just seem suspiciously close to the original designs.
      Anyway, I appreciate that you took time to reply to my comments and that you spent a considerable amount of time doing this KDH interview. It really was very interesting! I’ve always appreciated your guitars. I wish I could afford one, but I’m very, homebound, and have no cash income (and little help). Been trying to get a donated 24.75” electric guitar from major brands for over two years because the acoustic guitar my mom gifted to me before she passed in 2018 is painful to play for too long due to my disabilities (and then I became ill a few months later, adding to my medical issues), but either I never got responses or was told they have been overwhelmed with donation requests since the pandemic started. It’s a very long story, but I learned to play starting in March 2020 when I was physically able to give it a try. Between my physical issues and a TBI, it’s remarkable how far I’ve come - but now I can’t progress because I’m either not strong enough or it’s too painful to try things like hammer ons, bends, trills, etc being that acoustic guitars are much harder to play that electric ones (even with the action dropped very low and the lightest gauge strings the manufacturer recommends). Playing guitar has become a nearly daily form of physical, occupational, cognitive, and recreational therapy for me - plus, my service dog enjoys the live music as a form of relaxation after assisting me. Anyway, your guitars are stunning, and I always appreciate their beautiful tone and designs even if I’ll never have one of my own. Everyone who has one always says they are very well built. Your artistic talents and furniture background is incorporated into your guitar designs results in beautiful looking instruments with clear tone that can be used for any style of music. I always look forward to seeing your new designs and approaches. Thanks so much for sharing the story about growing up, how you built your business, and the backside of the business because your hands-on approach even after many years of building guitars makes me appreciate Ormsby Guitars even more! 😊❤️‍🔥🤘🏻🎸🔊🎶

      @perryormsby9298 Před 2 lety +1

      @@MashaT22 I’m sure that there has to be some sort of conspiracy going on with stealing designs. We’ve only worked with companies that we trusted or were referred to. Eg: hardware is made by a company WMI recommended. Pickups too.
      We wouldn’t just send out plans to multiple random companies to get pricing.
      China tends not to care about if it’s right to do something or not.

Maybe I was too relaxed whilst watching it, but the ending seemed to be very sudden... You did the guitar talk, he moves on to taking his kids to Disneyworld 'Thanks for the interview Perry, bye'... Maybe there was an off screen reason you ended it that way, and it really doesn't matter, it just seemed extremely abrupt. Maybe I'm the only person who thinks this?

    I placed my preorder for the run 14 Goliath early 2020 and once it arrived it was a joy to play on. I can’t wait until they release the Goliath variant with the headstock it looks awesome. I think Ormsby has a bright future regardless of the trends for headless guitars. Their direction is only getting better with the GTI line for other players to get a hand on Ormsby guitars.

    That guitar you pictured for a few moments with the painted rainbow colored fretboard is among the coolest I've ever seen. I bet it looks sick when it gets slightly rubbed off or whatever over time.

    I'm really curious what finishes he used on the early guitars. Delivery in 10 days is impressive, most finishes won't even be buffable by then. Unless he used automotive urethane like the big makers.
