  • Nyckelharpa isn't a common instrument at all and therefore it's quite hard to find one. Here are some tips to help you in the process.
    Here is the link to my webpage with adresses of builders, bow makers and teachers for nyckelharpa :

    Please help expand the list by telling me about more builders, courses and teachers, and giving characteristics of the nyckelharpas of builders you know (types of nyckelharpas, type of sound, famous musicians who play them...)

    I really appreciate you stressing the importance of not going "cheap" on the bow! I will follow your advice! And I also thank you for the specifics on your website; I've already followed loads of links from their, as I go "bow" hunting! AWESOME!!

    Good advice on purchasing a beginner vs advanced (expensive) instrument. I purchased a "beginner" nyckelharpa 15 years ago, and went through stages of being interested and not interested in playing it. Recently I have significantly improved my beginner nyckelharpa's sound with better strings, a better bow and some maintenance (tuning the tangents) and am more inspired than ever, and am planning on purchasing an advanced instrument. If you persist and find that you still love the nyckelharpa you will probably want a better one later.

    Thank you so much Emelie, I was planning to buy a nyckelharpa since I moved to Sweden and I got the chance to watch and listen to Josefina Paulson and I can say that your video and tips helped me more than you expect. I am looking forward to buy my first nyckelharpa. Subscribed :) Thank you again.

    Fantastic advice, even for other instruments! Obviously price ranges vary, but if you're getting nyckelharpor, fiddles, dulcimers, or any string instrument, these are great tips. Make sure the instrument is in good condition, and try it out (or ask for sound sample) to see. Thank you for educating us on the specifics of nykelharpa purchase!

    Love the sound of the Nyckelharpa. I'm increasingly tempted to build one. I have the big advantage of being a professional guitar maker and I've made other types of stringed instruments too. I know there is a book and DVD on how to build one. I guess I should just take the plunge and stop prevaricating!
    As for cost. Obviously they are relatively high compared to many instruments. After all there's no factory that produces them in great numbers. It's individual makers with low output. Having said that when you compare them to the cost of a good handmade violin or guitar then they aren't all that expensive - handmade violins and guitars can cost a huge amount.

      Well it seems you're kindof decided to build one yourself actually ;) Do you need a little push ? I give away pushes for people to get/build/play nyckelharpas, for free ^^
      Exactly about costs ! Basically as it's not a well-known nor mass-produced instrument, you rarely find very cheap ones, but they also don't reach the incredible prices of high-quality violins or even guitars. I would say nyckelharpas compare in price to a good quality basic guitar, kinda. Then it depends on the builder, as always. Some are really expensive.

      @@EmelieWaldken Lol !! Thanks for the little push. . . . . over the nyckleharpa cliff?
      It's a pity that there aren't cheaper playable instruments that are reasonable. With violins and guitars it's easy to get an instrument fairly cheap that is suitable for a beginner. That encourages people to have a go and they don't lose too much money if they decide that playing is not for them. Of course some who stay with it go on to buy much more expensive instruments, as I know as a guitar maker.
      I just have to decide what size and how many key rows for my nyckelharpa. I don't think the construction will give me too many problems (I've been making instruments for nearly 40 years!). Playing it will give me much trouble I am sure. I might have a few questions for you when I finally pick up a bow :-)

      @@vihuelamig I agree that it's a pity it's so hard to get our hands on reasonably priced instruments... basically these exist but only in Sweden kinda and one needs a little luck, too. Still, most makers (including outside of Sweden) offer a rental service for beginners, which I think is great !
      Size, you decide (I have a tendency to love big instruments, like mine is, because it tends to give them more "body" aka sound, but having a light-weighted 'harpa is VERY appreciable !
      I do recommend you to build 4 rows directly though. It's SUCH a great feature, an extension of this (already amazing) instrument ! I don't get how most swedish makers are still at 3 rows, seriously ^^
      Don't hesitate if you have playing questions - when you'll have built your 'harpa ;)

    • @vihuelamig
      @vihuelamig Před 5 lety +1

      @@EmelieWaldken I've already ordered the Soren Ahker book. I may even make a 3 row in traditional style (from solid sides) and another 'modern nyckelharpa' with 4 rows, with heat bent sides - more like what a violin or guitar maker would do. Maybe I should take photo's of how it is constructed and turn it into a CZcams video. There isn't much on CZcams showing the construction. Of course there are hundreds of videos for violin and guitar construction.
      Anyway it will take me some time before it is finished, maybe 4 or 5 months.
      Yes I'll try to make them as light as possible. No ebony! (it's a very heavy wood).

    Hi Emelie. I hope you won't mind if I'm sharing here a useful information for european people. Please remove this post if it doesn't match your expectations.
    Jean-Claude Condi (Mirecourt - France) organizes some stages at his workshop where he coaches people and helps them building their own nyckelharpa. Beware, the stage/work load is rather intensive (8 am to 8/9 pm). Wood crafting skills are recommended. All tools and material are provided. The different pieces are pre-shaped on tool machines (no debate here) so as the instrument can be completed within roughly 10+ days. Small/simple finishing operations (like varnish) are left at the trainees' discretion. I saw these instruments : they are visually simple and maybe a bit 'rough', but if you are skilled enough you can slightly personalize it (f shapes, decorations). I'm playing one of them in a video on my channel (first nyckelharpa steps ever. No rotten tomatoes, please !)
    2 weeks ago I met a belgian couple (originally hurdy-gurdy players) there, that just achieved their nyckelharpas. Their instruments played beautifully, and the woman's one (I can't remember her name) was an absolute visual piece of art. I'm afraid JC teaches only in french language... The stage cost is about €1400/1500 which is REALLY fair imo (housing and food upstairs, in his own workshop). You have to purchase a bow and a case separately.
    Not for everyone, I agree, but strongly determined people can get their instrument in this way for cheap. He himself confesses that it's a convenient and worthy way to spread the 'nyckelharpa culture' for a very reasonable amount of money. You also have the pride and satisfaction to build the instrument almost entirely by yourself...

    Hello Emilie, would you know of any builders who build nyckelharpa's for left-handed people? (I live in Belgium)

    • @EmelieWaldken
      @EmelieWaldken  Před rokem +1

      I guess most builders could do it, it's just about asking ! If you get a nyckelharpa built for you it shouldn't be difficult, but finding an already existing one is a much greater challenge.
      I have a list of builders in continental Europe here www.emeliewaldken.net/nyckelharpabuilders/europe-outside-sweden
