The problem with the Asus ROG Ally is the price. There's no way that they'll be able to touch the $399 base Steam Deck price. I'm pretty much 100% sure Valve is selling at least that base model at a loss, and they can because of their commissions from Steam.
Asus cannot do that; they make most of their money from selling devices. So they won't be able to touch that model, but I also don't think they'll be able to touch ANY of the higher-end configurations either. That's because Valve actually supports right to repair, they run a custom UI for game mode (they still have a desktop mode for those who want it, but Windows 11 wasn't meant for this form factor), and Valve has commited for quite some time to the specs of the OG Steam Deck, which is part of what created a big community around the Steam Deck. Asus will probably update the specs in a year or two, and then there goes the support!
And yes, the objectively better screen is really nice, but it's 16:9, which means things like FPS counters will cut into the game, and that and the performance jump alone isn't worth the likely premium over the Steam Deck.
TL;DR, the Steam Deck isn't going anywhere.
This, 100%. No one is going to touch the steam deck.
Ohh pricepoints might be concerning at the least, i heard rumours it being about 799$/699$ for the base model which really for many might make a decision over the top of the high tier SD..
No one's buy 399 stdeck
@@kelleralvarez2303 Not true. Since you can upgrade any of the models' SSD, it actually makes sense to buy the cheapest model and do a diy SSD upgrade.
@@cameronbosch1213 it's that's the case then if asus being $500, for sure it will be a hit.
You deserve many more subscribers, great job!! Continue constantly with the videos and you will quickly reach the top
I wouldn't even look at anything without trackpads.
The trackpads are severely underrated !
At first I thought I would never use them except for web browsing.
But they're a must for point-and-click games, strategy, management...
Playing The Sims 4 without trackpads would be weird now that I'm used to them.
Trackpads are a must for fps games for me
@Harisson Bond Same! For FPS I aim with trackpad+gyro. In Noita instead of the default twin-stick controls, I move the cursor with the trackpad in Mouse Region mode which works way better. Most of my channel videos now are just playing Steam Deck with the trackpad lol
@@DoubleJumpPunch that's great ! In FPS games I find I dont need gyro anymore because the trackpads are that good and accurate in performance
@Harisson Bond That's awesome, maybe I should practice trackpad-only as well :)
If the ROG doesn't have a great support system by their community like the Steam Deck does..then this won't be worth buying.
Quality Videos my man. Keep it up. Subbed.
Great video.. Well thought out, concise, accurate, and professionally done. And I agree with your thoughts as well. Thanks for posting, subscribed!
Lack of trackpads kill it
Who's here after just ordering a steam deck?
the deck gets awesome support by valve, whereas asus just depends on MS for making Windows handheld compatible.
@@DarkionAvey yeah that’s gonna be a problem
No contest. Steamdeck till the cows come home!
The ally looks pretty ugly imo, and little sidepoint trailers where for the most part kinda cringe xd.
Specwise it seems like a hell of an handheld and they say price will be competitive, although this for me would absolutly be a a no go, as i am prefer linux support over windows.
I listen to CZcams at 1.2x, and at that speed you sound exactly like Dave2D :D
They could have a lot of success with smart pricing
Background music is too loud at times
I’ll make sure to adjust it for the next video. Had some different headphones on mixing this one. 🎧
I agree, the music at the beginning was very loud compared to the voice, needs some proper mixing. Otherwise the video looks very very pretty, guess shot with Red camera. Amazing quality overall.
steam deck is hard to beat at that price,
I read Sony's new handheld will just be a streaming device & require a ps5. It would have been so cool if they kept the xperia play around
That sounds like an immediate flop.
@@cameronbosch1213 lol yup.....big time.
@@AllKinaTing Oh boy, does it REALLY look like I was right...
@@cameronbosch1213 lol facts
Keep going 100K maybe next year? :)
👀
The only way asus makes money is if they sell theirs at 500. Which would mean they sell every single one at a loss. They won’t be able to do it. It’s like every car company and the ev game. Ford loses 20,000 on every Mach E they sell. Hyundai only makes 800 per car. Tesla makes 25-30%…. 20-50k per car. Lol. Valve is now in the same position. The only way anyone will be able to compete with valve is to either sell at a huge loss… or be lucky and barely make anything.
Valve can do because they take commissions from Steam. Asus can't do that.
The will sell 3 million before the end of the year
Doubt
Hello, is there any chance to chat?
At £1k there is no way anything will beat the steam deck. At £500 perhaps but the steam deck is king. So much so that I'm holding out for a switch 2 for my boys birthday however might buy a second steam deck for his own use
Asus makes horrible software. I’ll pass.
And it's Windows 11. Which is pretty much only good for games with broken Linux Anti-Cheat or of course, spyware.
I had an awful experience with the ROG Phone 5.
Their Android 12 update set a thermal throttle to the SOC of 43°C (vs 50 in Android 11), because the phones' motherboards were melting due to the excessive heat. Even after they marketed the superior cooling technology in their elite gaming phone.
What this meant was that a 370$ Poco F3 with a Snapdragon 870, beat my 1100$ Gaming ROG Phone 5 with it's SD 888. Not happy at all.
I downgraded to A11 and performance came back. Shortly after the phone died.
I switched to a Red Magic 7S Pro and never looking back.
Back on the handheld PCs topic, I feel the deck has a pretty important advantage in it's control scheme. The trackpads and gyros make FPS games a lot more enjoyable.
The performance claims on this one are interesting, but we'll have to wait and see.
@@cameronbosch1213 Yea but I mean I wouldn’t mind Chimara OS on it
@@gsharpshooter80 True, but the Steam Deck is much more optimized for Linux than the Asus ROG Ally.
never been a fan of april's fool,
i just hope this is real and can make a dent on portable-pc-handheld market
Probably not. Steam Deck isn't going anywhere
If I remember windows don't have a good put to sleep mode and come back where your game is left off. Alot keys things Asus can do can't do in the software side of things.
Early gang!
Let’s GOOOOO! 😎🔥
Ally $650 base won't beat Steam Deck sorry!!! WIN11 sucks and viruses over Linux and its community support!!!
