There used to be a tradition that the audience would stand during the Hallelujah Chorus. (Supposedly because, at the first performance, the King stood up and everyone else had to stand up as well.)
I remember taking my 85 year old grandmother to a performance of the _Messiah_ and she insisted on standing even though she could barely hold herself up.

Because during Haendel's first performance in 1743, the King of England, King George III was SO IMPRESSED with what he heard... he STOOD UP in reverence. Therefore, it is tradition to stand.
