  • Most people believe that the Great White Shark is a mindless eating machine. In “Beyond the Cage of Fear”, a crew of scientists forms a relationship with a 2,000 pound Great White Shark named Bruce. They see through his eyes, swim with him, touch him and, in the end, they attempt a shocking experiment.

"Smart" or "mindful" are a stretch. Way too often shark enthusiasts are trying to label them as "intelligent" - alluding that this "intelligence" is somehow "thinking" or processing ideations. IT'S BRAIN IS THE SIZE OF A WALNUT!! Nearly all of it's "decision making is done by complex stimuli. Of course they can be "curious" and investigative - but ABSOLUTELY NOT in the way we think of what curiosity is. OF COURSE they're going to investigate surface activity by creatures with a ton of activity and are foreign to their normal environment! Does that make them "smart"?? Not at all. Am I saying they possess no intelligence? Of course not, but certainly not complex "emotions" and the levels of thought processing many shark enthusiasts ascribe to them

Because they're not intelligent they have pea brains. Common crows and other way less exotic animals have far superior intelligence but no one cares because they're not a super predator. You people try and attach human emotions and logic to the animal world just shows how disconnected you are

Thank you for another example of the extremely rare encounters with the great whites & free drivers off Guadeloupe Island. Yours is similar yet extraordinarily different, adding aspects unseen & unknown before. In the 80's I was privileged to live many yrs in Bermuda. 2 experiences, in this area stood out. 1 was when the revolutionary ocean vessel of Jacques Cousteau & son, (forgive name omission) was in St George's Harbour & being able to meet & talk to some of the crew. As I walked into St George's nearly every day meeting with people with diverse world wide backgrounds, was never ordinary & more often than not grew my & then my child's respect & love for the planet & it's inhabitants. 1 experience in this harbour, 1 that is usually viewed for seconds on nearly all shark documentaries opened my heart & child's to the plight of these apex predators.
A shark finning ship came into port. All of the killing had been done out at sea. The stench of drying shark fins could be smelt from the far edge of town. On that ship hung thousands of fins, with no more room to hang fins they lay on the decks of this, Japanese registered vessel, in piles. Now nearly 47 yrs later it's not stopped. You're APPRECIATED & VALUED! PLEASE CONTINUE TO do this kind of work. Humanity can't exist without preserving Earth's natural environments!
Peace, Gratitude, Protection to you all!!

The sharks are definitely into it. Not sure why, maybe it's just a novel sensation and they're finding it really interesting, but they're playing along either way. Which, yeah, completely shatters expectations.
And you know, sometimes you just have to find out. And when you've got people who are full aware of the risks and still willing to give it a shot? Hell, let 'em, and keep the camera rolling. That's the only way we learn about things like this.

    • @benfubbs2432

I know why, they have placed gigantic hunks of tuna bait in the water to attract the sharks so their attention is 100% focused on the potential free and easy meal. The divers are completely irrelevant to them and they will keep coming back so long as this bait remains on offer.
It doesn't shatter my expectations, I think it is exactly how I would expect the sharks to behave when they're offered a free meal. The expectations that were not met by me were for the documentary makes who, instead of educating us, chose to deliberately obfuscate and hide that the sharks were there for the bait so they can paint a false narrative of the sharks being interested in human interaction.

Thank you for this!! I've always thought it was remarkable when someone extolls the incredible sensory array of sharks out of one side of their mouth then out of the other side says they can't tell a human from a seal - which they've hunted for ten million years. What an incredible crew on the Captain Jack: talented, smart, courageous. The mermaid wasn't a stunt - she was proof. Anecdotal, but a real challenge to the stereotype.

The Mermaid " Hannah Frasier" was the craziest " Dumbest" of them all. If you watch the video again, you will see that every shark that she tried to approach, they all sped up to get away from her. They didn't want anything to do with her. ALL of the crew saw this But not "ONE" Man had the brains to tell her" Hannah, Don't go back in the water dressed as a mermaid. If you want to swim with them like Mark & Brad, just put on a wet suit and go for a Dorsal Fin Ride. But NO!!! Not one of them had ONE CONCERN for her safety Even after seeing that All of the sharks rejected her for some reason. SHE WAS LUCKY THAT NOT ONE SHARK TOOK HER AS A THREAT AND ATTACKED AND KILLED HER. That Pissed me off more than Thad "The Expert " With no schooling to this day and he's in his 60's. He worked at Sea World's Circus and watched 1/2 of the employees get killed from starvation to the animals as punishment and after 30 years of this improper work, The whales finally had enough and killed Poor Dawn & ate her whole body for Sea Worlds Cruel Punishment to the Orca's

And it's worth noting that telepathic connection is our birthright, not some form of magic.

Excellent. Very much enjoyed this. Only one point to make, regarding the early steel vs aluminium cages. I believe the early cages used in Blue Water White Death in 1969-70 (when the very first proper underwater footage of great whites was taken) were actually tubular aluminium, yet still the great whites off South Australia were quite aggressive against them, biting them and bumping them. Just thought Id mention that.

The fact that whites have varied personalities only makes them less safe. It just takes that one time a certain shark feels hungry and/or overly curious for it to take a bite of a swimmer or diver, and an exploratory bite from a 2 tonne apex predator with razor sharp teeth and a 2000 psi bite force is usually fatal. After all Great whites are responsible for the most human deaths of all shark species.
Granted they're not mindless killing machines and we would do well to understand them more and preserve them but we must never relax around apex predators or become too complacent. Every apex predator 'whisperer' has ended up being attacked and/or killed by said predator. They're not cuddly pets.

And why shouldn't each shark in spite of being a bit fishy behave any different than any other animal? Feel grateful around a wild animal that you are alive at all. Because to be wild mean surviving each day the very best you can. The sharks are tolerating your presence at that moment., doesn’t mean for one second they won’t kill you.
Yes it’s amazing that you are swimming with them, touching them.
On the flip side that’s also showing people that they could do the same thing.

Amazing video about a animal that deserves a lot of help from humans. They are gorgeous and we know that they are at the top of the food chain and need a lot of help from us.......

They don't really need our "help" so much as our absence like if ppl would stop messing up our oceans and straight up leave them alone totally they will thrive the way they did before humans had the power to ruin everything we touch.

What if the Shark's favorite thing to eat is Mermaids, and now you just dressed up your diver like bait?

So many divers around the Bahamas dive very often with Tiger sharks & Lemon sharks that are fed to keep them in one location so, ppl can stay on the bottom & take pictures of them. Even though these Tiger & Lemon sharks seem tamed, they still take a legitimate shot at biting a diver every now & then. As long as the sharks in the Bahamas at Moon Beach are regularly fed the divers are always at risk of being eaten. At least with Great Whites there's a cage in the water that's a refuge.

Sadly, that facts are that large sharks sometimes eat people. So, even while there are videos like this being made in Guadalupe there are shark attacks where ppl are consumed.
This is a great documentary & very educational. Unfortunately, really big sharks such as Great Whites, Tiger, Bull & Great Hammerheads are atracking & consuming humans.

....and I don't care what anyone thinks: Getting in the water in a mermaid suit with a wavy tail that looks like a fish lure is beyond stupidity regardless of how well u THINK u know a shark with a brain the size of a walnut you're ascribing sentient thinking to

What would have happened if the shark had attacked? The diver would have had to use his harpoon? Against this wonderful Bruce! The humans decided to take the risk, OK, their choice, but Bruce didn't make a choice and in case of a problem he would have become the first victim. Sorry but I don't understand where is the fun here. Of course the images are wonderful, but I think humans don't have the right to play this game with innocent animals.

Your right the shark had no choice and it most certainly would have been "neutralized" for merely just being a shark doing shark stuff but I'm glad it didn't turn out that way but what happens to the inevitable next time they decide to try this cuz there will be more now it feels like Russian roulette but it's the sharks tha0t truly pay the price.
