  • 10 Years ago at my grandfathers funeral my Father asked me to build him a casket for his funeral. A couple good friends came together to help me make this last wish of my fathers come true.

    The family working together to build a "pine box" for the man that helped to build the family. I will say this is awesome, good work, and good on all of you. I can only imagine his soul is smiling.

    I’m sure your dad loved it. About three years ago, my siblings and I built a similar casket for my dad, using his tools, in his shop, with what he taught us and in his style. It was a very meaningful experience for all of us. I hope it brought your family together as it did ours.

    I did the same for my beloved old man, who died in1992. He was an amazing, brilliant and loving man and father to me and my 5 siblings. He fought in W.W. II as a bombardier on a B-17, for 2 1/2 yeras and was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross"- TWICE! He was on a bombing run on June 6,1944 -D-Day. And the only thing he shared with me about the day was that-he had never realized that there were so many ships in the world-let alone in that one place at that singular time. He rarely spoke of the things he did while in the service-an apparently common trait with W.W. II vets. I was just starting out as a cabinet maker when he died. But I knew it was coming and inevitable-he had Alzhiemers for 6 years-and to see him whittling away was heartbreaking.And we all chipped in and took care of him at home till the end. The building took only a week. And was completed only a week before he went. I especially remember taking his measurements . It was then I realized that I was'nt measuring for a kitchen cabinet or a bookcase, it was my old mans resting place for all eternity.. Nice big dovetails and all. I think the old man appeciated the love and sweat that went into that box. I know he did and still does.Being 62 now- I have 3 daughters who are as far away from cabinetry as you can get. In the not too distant future- I believe I will start taking measurements---again. Seeing this video---I havent thought about these things in 25 years. Forgive my rambling. Peace.

      I totally appreciate your "rambling." My father was too young for WWII, but my father-in-law won a Bronze star for making one working airplane from two downed ones in Germany during WWII. I did not know until a few years before his death back in 2006. He was married with one little 2 yr old boy when he got drafted. I still have his letters to my mother-in-law from those days. So glad he lived through it to father my husband into existence! Thank you for sharing about your beloved dad.

      We were different Americans back then. Can you imagine a world war now? The services would be hard pressed to get 1/10th of the manpower it needs.. And can you even fathom what kind of reception a draft would get?

    How long did it take to make? Was your father still alive at the time? Did you do the interior, or did someone else? Was it silk? Or satin? Was was the under lying material for the under bedding? Cotton? Straw? The carry rods, were they polished aluminum? Fixed position, or do they have a swivel point? Do you make them for a living also? Sorry I'm being nosey, but that's just how I am. Looks really good by the way.

    • @codypilcher
      @codypilcher  Před 4 lety +2

      Jeff McKenzie it took us about 2 weeks working on it a couple nights a week. Yes my father was still alive when we started the project. It was about 2 weeks before he passed away. Pancreatic cancer. I believe it was silk. And we used a foam pad from Home Depot. I do not make them for a living. But a good friends father had a cabinet shop and offered to help. The handles are fixed. They are stainless and off a fire engine. My dad worked his entire life as a Firefighter. Evan went to New York for 911 and helped search the piles. Thanks for all the questions.
