- A Friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer 3 years ago. She asked me to make her casket. I was honored and scared at the same time. She didn’t want anything fancy... something simple with inexpensive materials. The first half of the video was shot in February 2022. The second half was shot in July 2022.
I was happy to make this for a friend & her family.
I love you guys xo
Thank you!!

44 years as a potter, I made about 25 burial urns, for Parents, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts, best friends and for people I did not know. These were the most difficult pieces to do, with all the tears running down my face. Vaya con Dios to all of these people. Thanks from St. Paul Minnesota.
God bless you..God does go with them, never leaving our side.
baby
@@FriggOff361 It happens to everyone I hope it doesn't happen to you that a relative dies and you cry "like a baby" and then someone comes to make fun of you.
Pine coffins
I really want to Thank you! I built my mother's casket from my great grandfather's barn and her barn. And lined it with her great grandmother's quilts. I am not sure I would gotten it finished in time without your video.
You never know how your can videos really effect people's lives.
From the bottom of my heart, Thank you so much!
This got my eyes watered up. What an incredible piece for you to have built, I can't even imagine working through it. You never know how a comment can effect someone's life! My heart feels warmer and I reflect on how great humanity is capable of being. Thank you
Must have been one of the hardest builds ever, just from your heart. True honor that your friend wanted this from you.
Inexpensive, but priceless. What an honor to be asked to make someone’s final resting place, amazing job.
The most authentic gift. ❤️😭✌️
It’s priceless.
I have been a funeral director for 15 years, and have seen lots of home made caskets. None have been half couch like this. Nice build, beautiful tribute.
❤❤❤
My dad, brothers and I built the casket for my daughter while my mom made the inside. It was a painful time but such a beautiful experience to do something like that. 10 years later and I can still remember it vividly.
I'm a 60 year old construction worker and just watching this filled my eyes with tears
I have always respected seeing how kind you are to others, weather it’s other makers or the people on the streets of Brooklyn. This video adds to that legacy. You are a good man Jimmy, so sorry for your loss.
❤
@@jimmydiresta my humblest condolences to you on losing your dear friend, that’s a pain that nobody should have to feel
@@jimmydiresta I certainly hope they will rest well in the next life knowing that they were loved to the very last 😭😭😭🥹🫡
Your friend can be certain that you are the best kind of friend. Well done, Jimmy ❤
The range of emotions you must have went though on this special build, the honor of of building your friends final resting place, but also the fear and sadness with each piece added. Beautiful job mate.
beautifully put!
Just researching how to build one would no doubt be emotional given the circumstances
What a way to honor and support your friend and do something nice for her at a time in her life when people probably feel most helpless. ❤️
I had a lump in my throat just watching it and I don't even know either of you. Tough build emotionally. You have a big heart man.
Somehow I was finding tears dripping on my keyboard , That was a labor of love .May her God open and embrace her to the pain free side . Amen
I was commissioned some years ago to paint a mural on the inside panels of a casket. Although it was for someone i never met it was the heaviest projects ive ever done. So i can't even imagine doing this for a friend . This was a painfully beautiful video . Hit me right in the feels .
This had to be a very emotional build, I give you made props for being able to build something like this for someone.
Brutal. Thank you for letting all of us in to an obviously very special piece.
“I think a gentleman is someone who holds the comfort of other people above their own. The instinct to do that is inside every good man, I believe” - Anna Kendrick
I Love You Jimmy
That is all ❤
❤❤❤❤
I'm so sorry, Jimmy. I built a box to keep my mother's ashes in- it was one of the easiest, yet hardest projects I've ever made. Thank you for sharing this.
I didn’t want to watch this one. I watched it all the way through thinking that. Couldn’t stop. Sorry for your loss Jimmy. Such a good friend.
Brought tears to my eyes. I built one for my father, a life-long carpenter, who died in June.
What an absolutely amazing way to honour your friend. I can not even begin to imagine the scale of emotion you must have personally gone through while building such a tribute for someone so special to you. I feel your pain in the video, It really came across in the making of such a beautiful casket. It is without a doubt the most heartfelt video I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Jimmy, I am truly sorry for your loss my friend. Love and Respect from North London UK.
She is incredibly lucky to have you as a friend. What an incredibly kind gift. I hope this brought you both some comfort.
Certainly the most moving and heartfelt build video I've had the honor of watching....no, feeling.
Ever.
You are a good person.
I could not stop watching. As I watched I thought, “ How many of these has Jimmy built?” It looked like you had done a bunch. It’s one of the reasons you are one of my top 3 craftsmen to follow. A personal request with such a sad ending at some point and you made a beautiful resting place for a friend. There will be a special place for you in Makers’ Heaven.
What an honor. Your friend is truly resting in peace. Good on you, brother and sorry for your loss.
My condolences Jimmy and my prayers.
What a thing to do for a friend. Hats off to you for taking it on, such a responsibility but as ever, this looks stunning and I’m sure was more about love than anything else.
Hard for me to watch, such a mixture of emotions & yet powerful & positive in the endless love of creation & help that is humanity. Thank you for sharing!
What a beautiful thing you created for your friend, I would have been crying the whole time I was working on it.
I’m speechless. What an amazing gift of friendship.
Jimmy, I’m a cancer survivor and carpentry enthusiast. Early in my chemo treatments I had enough energy to build a small box to hold the essential oils I used to overcome chemo-induced nausea, which I still use today. This video brought back profound memories of the peace I felt 7 years ago, working with those 1x4 trim boards, wondering what was going to be next for me and more importantly, my wife.
Later in chemo I was lower on energy and stumbled upon Dirty Money, which introduced me to you, and I streamed in excess while I laid on the couch.
Your creativity and spirit are a wonderful gift. Thank you for selflessly sharing both.
What an honor, privilege and a beautiful act of love for a friend. I’ve no doubt that her family is greatly moved by this.
Honestly how many people in the planet are asked to do this and can actually emotionally do it? Amazing build.
Our deepest condolences at the passing of your friend. You have honored her in such a special way. She was surely blessed to have a friend like you. 🤎
The last furniture project that my father and I made together was his casket. We built it about 5 or 6 years before he died an we stored it in a crate in the garage. My daughter and I upholstered it a day or two before the viewing. We built quality furniture for the whole house, family and friends. His casket was quality furniture on par with the best that a person can buy. We were proud to show what we built together. It wasn't hard for us to it build together. It was very hard to uncrate, upholster and deliver to the funeral home.
Your work never ceases to amaze me, but your friendship and kindness are just unmatched. We all only have so much time on this earth, and the race is not won by what material things we leave behind, it's won by the memories and impact we left on those around us. I'm proud to call you my friend, and I'm sure she was too. Sorry for your loss brother. Keep on keeping on!
We are best measured by the gifts given that can never be repaid. This reminds me of one of the first builds I saw by the Samurai Carpenter when he made an urn for a lost child. Some of his best work and, like yours, shows what craft can truly be about.
My condolences on your loss. Such a beautiful way to honor your friend.
This the first time a making vídeo of Jimmy got me in tears, You are a real friend Jimmy 🙏
Very nice. Sorry for the loss of your friend
What a friend you are to your loved one. May god bless you.
You are such a good person, any of your friends are lucky to know you. I don't usually write comments, but this viedeo touched me to the core. Well done.
I'm sorry for your loss, Jimmy. The casket is beautiful. She'd be proud.
Bro...beautiful work, labor of love...I think somebody's cuttin' onions in here 😢...gotta go man...
What a lovely thing to do for your friend ! I'm a wood worker and I've always wanted to build kids caskets and give them to needy families. You've inspired me to do so. May God richly bless you brother.
Thank you for sharing.
This is an astounding and heartbreaking work of art. A lot of us could learn a lot from you - not just about woodworking but also about being such a good and thoughtful friend.
Love the use of everyday bought stuff. Makes me feel like it’s something I might be able to make. Make On my Friend your Brother from another mother Maker 238.
Absolutely NO words. Lump in my throat, and watery eyes with an overflow of thoughts of just how precious life is, Jimmy. Perhaps the MOST moving "content" I've ever watched, and honestly supersedes the term "content" because it encapsulates our end. Urns, Coffins or Sea Burials we all just stop one day. We all do. Thank you for sharing Jimmy Diresta.
My uncle, father, cousin, and I built my grandmother's casket. I know the sense of honor and the unique grief that this act brings. My heart aches for and with you.
I made my dads urn a couple of years ago. We did woodworking together and I made it from a burl that we collected together. It was so meaningful and helped me so much.
I am sorry for your loss but I hope you find solace through this process.
Thanks for sharing your story… What a cool way to honor your dad. May he rest in peace, and comfort to you. 🥲
Jimmy, you sir are the real deal and what we all search for in a friend !
What a extremly hard thing it must been for you to do. Before I read your comment I was thinking, man that's some cheap materials for a casket... But is was her will. Priceless.
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you felt some catharsis from this build. Giving your friend a nice resting place is a really great thing to do for them.
Clever maker ideas mixed with tough emotions when the personalization began. Thanks for sharing.
Sad but a beautiful gesture at the same time. Thoughts for her family and friends.
What a beautiful tribute to your friend and her family. I'm sure it was a daunting task, but in the end, I'm sure it felt good to be able to honor her request. She's lucky to have such a good friend.
I had a lump in my throat while watching the video. Respect for your great work and for sharing it with us.😢😢
You're a good man Jimmy. Love you brother.
The last gift of a friend for his friend who takes the last walk on earth. God bless you brother and your friend.
Hugs Jimmy. This couldn’t have been easy.
As hard as that may be take honor and pride that your friend trusted you to give them the final gift
What a beautiful way to honor your friend, beautiful friendship, beautiful story. You're amazing Jimmy
This is one of the best things I've seen you do, a simple inexpensive casket, as requested, put together with more style than if it where made of marble and gold. You are a good friend.
Thank you for sharing.
I can't comment what someone has already commented.
Oh Jimmy.
If I was a any kind of a craftsman my tears would have been all over that build.
And I would have done many retakes to try and hide it.
That is probably the most magnificent project you'll have ever built.
I know that it had to be hard to build something like this for someone you care about. This is truly a labor of love and respect. My condolences on your loss.
All of will make that journey, you took away a huge expense and a lot of stress for her and her family. Sent her off with care and style appropriately. What a gift in life to be able to lessen the burden of death.
Deepest Respect and sympathy sorry for your loss
It's hurtful, just to imagine that someone ask you to make them a casket, like a cold shower. You did what she wanted, a last wish and a honor. Bless her, you, both family's and friends.
It is a beautiful proof of friendship and love.
What an amazing gesture of love for your friend. Your sharing of this private moment will inspire others to build such a project for their loved ones, as well. Paying it forward was never so well expressed.
Ditto to all the well written comments, most are well written, better than I could have ever came up with, my condolences to you sir!
Beautiful. Sorry for your loss, Jimmy.
We should all be so lucky to have this wonderful gift from a loved one. Thanks for sharing Jim
I hope I never learn anything else about you, Mr Diresto, because nothing can ever live up to the respect and awe I have for you and your craft.
That must have been so hard to build. Sorry for your loss, Jimmy.
A True labor of Love....Respect, Love and Friendship
Damn, that was heavy to watch. Complete double edged sword of emotions. Simple yet beautiful, possibly a reflection of your friend.
One of the many(,many, many) things my pet rats taught me was how therapeutic building a simple box can be. To go a step further- so is digging a hole.
Sympathies.
JD one Man Army. Perfection in every detail. Chapeau bas.
I love what you do Jimmy, NEVER QUIT!!
Much love from Michigan.
Cant imagine the emotions. Looking back wish I had the opportunity to do this for my father. Condolences on your loss.
Sad but beautiful, nice tribute Jimmy!
You are an incredible friend, Jimmy. Such a beautiful build and tribute ♥
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
I could not imagine doing a project like this...but i could not think of a better way to honor you friend with such a project. Great job Jimmy. prayers for you and your friends family.
Brother, watching this made me extremely sad and happy at the same time. What a wonderful gift to give your friend, and what extraordinary courage she had to ask for it.
Four years ago my stepfather passed away... I was asked to make the urn for his memorial and it was a manic two days of cutting and gluing segmented cherry and purple heart (his favorite woods) and it tore at my heart every moment. I can only imagine you were feeling the same, I'm so sorry for your loss, but its a glorious resting place to take pride in being asked to build.
Jeepers me I’d a lump in my throat at the end.
What an honour to gift a wish from a friend, I’m sure this was a very difficult build Jimmy but one that meant so much more on a personal level ❤
No better way to honor a friend by building a beautiful final resting place. Well done, Jimmy. We are here with you.
This video made this world weary man tear up. Beautiful job, so much love and respect put into the final work. This must have been very difficult, and I thank you for sharing this build as many people might not want to, being so personal of a story.
👊🏼 Damn Dude ..
I made both my Folks cremation burial boxes back in 99’ and 02’ ….
They wanted “simple” and because of the cost of the funeral industry stuff.
The personal time spent making this was part of the acceptance process .
Thanks for Sharing Your Skills BrotherMan.🙏🏼👊🏼
Your making the pillow was very touching. I bet that was hard to do. God bless you.
Well done, Jimmy. 😢 What a beautiful build and beautiful video. I can only imagine the emotions you had to go through with this one. May your friend Rest In Peace. ❤
It must be hard but satisfying to honor a friend in such a way ,,,God bless you
A true labor of love and honor.
Good on you, Jimmy, for making that for a friend. I have had the privilege of making a couple of cremation urns; one for a friend, and one for my mom. There are a lot of emotions wrapped up in a project like that.
Thanks for sharing this.
I, another motherless son, offer my condolences to you on the loss of your mom. Mine went to the next place in 2017
@@pacificcoastpiper3949 Thank you. And may God grant you comfort. Nothing can fill the holes left when we lose someone dear to us, but in time, we can take comfort in the good memories.
If I give more than 1 thumbs up , that will be 50,000 and more . That is the great honour to do that for your friend. I have tears in my eyes, thinking of your emotions at the building those. Your friend can well rest in peace in such a casket. Condolence from germany
You are a man of true heart Jimmy. This is a beautiful build. An awesome tribute to your good friend.
Condolences to the family and blessings to you Jimmy as you mourn the loss of your friend and show great kindness to her family in this time of loss. You are a class act sir.
