Years ago I put my Browning pocket knife on my bedside table and racked out for the night. I dreamed I was riding in a raggedy Deuce and a Half and was cleaning my nails as we drove over a bridge with a grate road. In my dream I dropped the knife and it fell through the floor bed then through the grating toward the water below. Gone. The next morning as I I started to work I reached for my knife. It was gone and I never saw it again.
About 30 years ago, I was coming back from a weekend in the field. The guy in the Deuce behind me, had a woman hit the front bumper with her Plymouth SW. Right there, where the front bumper has the bend in it, her car tore that weld loose, and bent the bumper the other way. She was able to drive away> Had I not seen the result and her car, I'd never believe it. (I didn't actually see the incident.) Yes, I STILL want a Deuce. With the turbo, and the multifuel engine. And, the real transmission. "You just shifted from second to fourth." "No, I just shifted from third to fourth. Fifth is up here." steve
That’s what I did this summer , bought AnAmerican truck, bought my Bobbed custom M35A2 From Boyce Equipment, from of Ogden , Utah. I love my truck even had it modified with Dump bed capability. I can load up fire wood , haul sand gravel, or supply’s from Lows. Great for camping excursions .
20 years ago I saw 30 of these standing on reserve parking in Air Force Base I was serving, just sitting on sand under eucalyptus trees. The maintenance guy would start everyone of these trucks and drive forward and backward like 5 meters (like 20 feet) once a week. The guy would bring a paint bucket and would scrap off bad paint and paint with a freaking brush... We still got these in reserve duty. Every time there is a mess going on with reserve being called to duty, you can see these carrying army stuff, which happens too often here in Israel... Here we don't call these trucks deuce and a half, they are called Reo or Reos
I would imagine that tire replacement could be expensive. During WW2 and after the US military paid for research to come up with an engine that would burn any liquid fuel. In the early years of the research it was shown that the engine design would burn powdered coal or flour equally well. The design was finalized in the late 1970s as the TCCS. It would literally burn any liquid fuel, but most successfully diesel or gasoline. Some UPS trucks had a TCCS engines in them. The combustion chamber was actually in the piston rather than the cylinder head. CR was anywhere between 14 to 1 and 16 to 1.
I owned a 2015 Ram 2500 Megacab, then I started to renovate my house and bought a M1028 that had a LQ4 6.0 engine installed. I love it to death, Nothing can Hurt it. I sold My MegaCab 3 weeks ago. A Deuce an 1/2 will have to be next.
Iv got that yr & model as well. Mine has the White under its hood. My pot belly sleeps under it loves the shade. Best of all, this truck doesn't give a dam about your feelings and is not confused about its gender👍!
I just got one for 2k. They thought it was fried, but it just had a hidden kill switch to prevent theft. It has 27k and runs like a top with the LD 463!
I have owned 2 of them. Good trucks. You build up your chest and arms steering that thing around city streets making turns around corners. People do yield to you and stay away from the truck. It is slow but that is okay.

I ran a fleet of 60 of them for a few years. They are pretty tough but to do them right they are a bit maintenance intensive.Parts can be had but you'll work for them.
You need to do the scheduled maintenance and inspections, just like the book says. If you run it 8 hrs a day, you have about 3 hrs of stuff to do every week. Yup. I America everyday. Daily drive my '69 Kaiser Jeep M35A2 w/w. I get free oil from guys at work and from a race track. Not to mention my kids love riding in it, they feel like the baddest kid on the block and I don't blame them, lol.
Finally wanted to ask you, what's your opinion on the multifuel, both the LDT and LDS? And do you still run them or swapped it for something else? I see you in the comments on a ton of videos
@@hummerguy I like the multifuel engines. The LTD/LDS are the same other than a few minor differences, but these are good engines if used correctly. Keeping the rpm's in mind, fresh oil, and constant monitor of the engines temperature, there are very few issues these motors typically have and imo, the stock oil filters being a big one. The IP's can be issue but it's fairly uncommon if taken care of. I don't plan on swapping mine out. If anything, I can rebuild the motor with new gaskets and rod bearings, pistons/rings, and sleeves for under $1500 if I shop around. I don't mind the lack of power many have the reasoning for swapping the motors out for. The main factor being I'm familiar with the multifuel engines and the fact that it can save so much money on fuel with clean wmo, the slow speeds and lack of power imo is well worth it and that's what the deuce is. It's a bad ass underpowered military truck and if something with more umpth is required, then I'd get a 5 ton, but I like the deuce as is, I don't want it to be something it's not if that makes sense, it's all part of the experience I guess, lol.
@@toddk1377 Yea I pretty much agree, the only thing I've thought about is swapping my LDT out for a LDS since some of them are rated at 200hp and 440 Ft Ibs compared to the LDT 130hp and 330 Ft Ibs, Im not really sure what's all difference, all I really know is about the pistons being bigger and I think the crank. I got all spin on filters on mine, I have yet to turn the fuel up any, I kind of want to turn it up a little, I don't really know if it's going to make a huge difference in terms of making power, the max RPM I go to is usually around 2,000-2,100
@@hummerguy Turning the fuel up can make a difference, enough difference to pull hills and such a lot easier, but you have to run a pyrometer if you do, the heat can exceed 1300°F and if so, you'll start damaging the pistons, melting one or more of those is no fun, lol, I've done it once when the head blew on mine long long time ago. One thing that helps though without fuel adjustment, if you can aquire it, run some jet fuel. That stuff is more powerful than diesel. A good blend of wmo with gas and diesel can do similar if the blend is right, but jet fuel is clear so it's very dry, I did a 50-50 blend of wmo to jet fuel and my truck had some power, lol. I burned 330 gallons of that stuff with no problems. It's just hard to get unless you know the right people.
@@toddk1377 Im currently running a pyrometer, I tend to stay around 500-600F when Im trying to get through traffic. Has anyone ever installed an intercooler to keep the temperature down even more with the fuel turned up? Seems like it'll probably be more possible with a different turbo I guess. I never thought of running jet fuel, that'll be pretty interesting, I was thinking about possibly running WVO with diesel 50-50. Cold weather isn't really a concern where Im at either so gelling of the WVO wouldn't be much of an issue
Gotta love Big Boy trucks!! When I get mine, my kick is going to be bugging F450 owners...."Hey those are nice little mall pick ups.Is that yours or your wife's?" LMAO
I spent some time years ago driving and living in the M109 Van version. Fuel and maintenance can be a problem, along with making sure the Prop Shaft is in the right way around. Geoff Who is too old to do his own maintenance.
Looking at about $8k now for a good one. Tires, well check Steel Soldiers and govt surplus. I got my truck for $12k and it had the MRAP rims and tires.
You should take that rig on Trooper Tyree's October 2022 Great Smoky Mountains Convoy. See HISTORY in MOTION magazine 'Events' listing of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.
yea i gave up on finding a Deuce i could afford but a 1973 f600 6x6 fell into my lap for $700 found a 6.9 idi to swop in to replace the 330 and its unstoppable 10 tons on road 5 tons off road i just threw a up a living box on the back and if i put my foot to the floor i can see 65 mph 70 if i have a good tailwind the 6.9 seems to run out of steam at 3000 rpm but if i keep steady at 55 i can manage 13-15 mpg .... sept colorado i get like 8
I almost cannot comprehend how insane this vehicle must have been in the 40s when it was new. It’s capabilities are so far beyond anything anyone else had that calling it the best VEHICLE of the Second World War is an understatement, and vehicle includes aircraft and ships. The carrying capacity of the M35 combined with the reliability and rather advanced (for the 40s) design meant that one of these trucks could carry 5 tons of materiel when on roads or if carrying fuel then by weight alone up to 1500 gallons of gasoline. I cannot imagine how much more of a nightmare American Second World War logistics would have been if we had used a lesser vehicle. Especially considering the fact that everything the US used needed to be moved around the whole US (although this was mostly by train for long distances) loaded onto a ship and shipped to theater then unloaded and moved to depots and from depots to frontline. If all those steps took twice as many vehicles that’s twice the fuel consumption, twice the maintenance, twice the replacement parts, twice the number of vehicle crews, twice the traffic, twice the unloading time, and even twice the amount of space taken up on ships to move logistics vehicles to theater meaning that space is not being taken up by materiel possibly slowing down logistics even more (although we had a LOT of liberty ships so that might not have really slowed things down at all).
Douglas Hughes Here in NJ I registered and insured mine QQ with antique insurance. The company I use allows 3K of travel per year. Or for a bit more cash I can up the mileage. And it's covered any time, not just shows or parades.
Also, he didn't mention, you drive your new car off the lot, it depreciates in value. These trucks if you keep them in good condition, only appreciate in value.
First drove an M35 back in the 80's. Returning it to the motor pool after an exercise; the first 90 turn I came to, I wildly underestimated the turning ability of an M35 and just barely avoided jumping the curb and driving across the finely manicured lawn of base HQ. Very embarrasing for a young officer!
I admire your honesty and choice of vehicles! Would be ideal for running through climate protesters! I'm surprised insurance is so cheap; but I do understand your explanation.
This is like an alternative to what I've been wanting. They're soviet union trucks. Old, still run, and slightly industructable from what I know of. Some of them were built in the 60s. They only burn diesel though. Guess that's the only down part. I can see some logging attachments on it. But those are hard to find for me. I don't know why
Outside of the former Soviet Bloc & parts of the third-world, former Soviet equipment isn't that abundant. The Soviets generally kept things in mothballs until they were completely unusable, or sold it to sympathetic countries/causes. However, as you indirectly pointed out, the former Soviet trucks/truck designs were/are popular with logging and other off-the-beaten-path jobs in that part of the world, and some almost certainly were written off/transferred/sold to the relevant entities. And if you do manage to find one, make sure it isn't dry-rotted to hell and back. I've heard some absolute horror stories about buying Soviet milsurp, only to find the rubber had 3 or 4 decades of dry-rot, with the metal in not much better shape.
The best vehicle in the service. When it came to dependability the deuce and a half was always ready.
Forget living in the forest.....this Deuce and a Half just gave me all the wood I need!
most american video i've ever seen that didn't involve guns.

Cant’t have everything!
The truck is his weapon
They did have a few quick clips of them shooting guns in the credits at the very end tho.
Time to mount .50 cal machine gun on it ;)
Definitely on my bucket list to own one of these one day
When I was in the Army about 48 years ago we went everywhere in the back of a deuce and a half. Cool truck fun to drive.
The most fun military truck to drive was the m915 with its 16-speed transmission and 400 HP Cummins engine once you drive that nothing can compare

@@hummerguy
Turning the fuel up can make a difference, enough difference to pull hills and such a lot easier, but you have to run a pyrometer if you do, the heat can exceed 1300°F and if so, you'll start damaging the pistons, melting one or more of those is no fun, lol, I've done it once when the head blew on mine long long time ago.
I will have one someday
The game snowrunner brought me here. God bless America!🇺🇸
Question, how did snowrunner bring you here? I never could find a M35a2 mod, the closest I found was the 5 ton
@@hummerguy I'm not sure if it's the M35 model you speak of, I just have a couple of Deuce 1/2 on the game. So that's why it brought me to this video.
@@johnnie2388 Oh, do you have those on xbox?
@@hummerguy yes, I played it on Xbox series s. It was quite addicting for a while.
muito top esse caminhao o veterano REO em Maceio tinha desse modelo aqui no Exercito em Alagoas
Really want to get a deuce but it feels wrong to drive one without serving in the military tbh even if its not in service anymore
Mate i like your video and i like your attitude
Yeah, make sure you get a water tank trailer or a M105 cargo trailer then practice backing up 8 hours a day
Learned to drive stick on one of these bad boys. Could fumble the clutch into first and it wouldn't kill.
My man
Gotta love Big Boy trucks!!
Be really nice to find one in good working order for a couple thousand. I'm just wondering what the tires will cost . Yikes
Shawn Fox
Tires are surplus. I got a full set for $99. Got them from Eastern Surplus last summer. Cost me $250 to have them mounted
Looking at about $8k now for a good one. Tires, well check Steel Soldiers and govt surplus. I got my truck for $12k and it had the MRAP rims and tires.
I like this M35A2 a lot. After owning it, is it ok driving in the street?
I had 2 of these in the late 90s fixed them and sold
I like this guy
You should take that rig on Trooper Tyree's October 2022 Great Smoky Mountains Convoy. See HISTORY in MOTION magazine 'Events' listing of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.
I wish I could afford to buy one, I'd run it till there was nothing left to run, then fix it back up, and run it some more...
SUPER COOL TRUCK!!!!
Just bought one!
I want that t-shirt. 😈
beautiful truck
I own one by myself. A M109A3 Shop Van. It's a cool truck, but if you search a powerful engine, you choose better some other...
I need it now
yea i gave up on finding a Deuce i could afford
but a 1973 f600 6x6 fell into my lap for $700 found a 6.9 idi to swop in to replace the 330 and its unstoppable 10 tons on road 5 tons off road i just threw a up a living box on the back and if i put my foot to the floor i can see 65 mph 70 if i have a good tailwind
the 6.9 seems to run out of steam at 3000 rpm but if i keep steady at 55 i can manage 13-15 mpg .... sept colorado i get like 8
Where's it cuz I have the Moby "shut up and take my money"😂
If all those steps took twice as many vehicles that’s twice the fuel consumption, twice the maintenance, twice the replacement parts, twice the number of vehicle crews, twice the traffic, twice the unloading time, and even twice the amount of space taken up on ships to move logistics vehicles to theater meaning that space is not being taken up by materiel possibly slowing down logistics even more (although we had a LOT of liberty ships so that might not have really slowed things down at all).
the M35 came out in 1953. Last batch built for air force in 1987. I have owned a 1971 and a 1987.
I want one!!! Where can I find one!!??
Outstanding
Just sold an extra vehicle that I owned and I have to buy one of these can you direct me as to where to go. Thank you and God bless America
Imagine if this had a screaming jimmy, it would haul
Needed in UK for "Merge In Turn" junctions.
He makes a compelling argument
Nice! But where does one buy parts for it though? Still sweet
Murica! Nice hat too.
How do you insure it? In CT a private passenger policy only allows a GVW of 10,000 pounds. Do you get commercial insurance or???
Douglas Hughes
Here in NJ I registered and insured mine QQ with antique insurance.
I've heard some absolute horror stories about buying Soviet milsurp, only to find the rubber had 3 or 4 decades of dry-rot, with the metal in not much better shape.
yup unfortunately we didnt get urals like the 375 . they do seem to perform better .
