Common Bearded Dragon Care Mistakes

  • When it comes to the proper care and maintenance of the bearded dragon, opinions vary greatly-especially regarding whether or not you can use sand, or feed dragons insects such as meal worms. However, in the three decades that we have been keeping and breeding these personable dragons, we have learned much and we'd like to share with you what has worked for us time and time again. After we have seen and heard many horror stories about pet stores and the improper reptile husbandry we decided to address these issues in this video. We know there will be those that disagree with us about some of these controversial things, but we will put our husbandry and the health of the dragons that we produce up against any in the country.

    The most important piece of your reptiles habitat.
    The health and well being of your pet depends on having the right environment. Don't trust it to cheap gauges that come in pet store "kits". We have 3 of those side by side and they NEVER give the same readings. We have used the V.E. brand thermostats for years without problems, and how been found accurate when tested.
    Most feeding and other health problems can be avoided when the environmental needs are met.
    This is how we take the guess work out of our dragons environment:

    A water bowl in a cage depends... Usually having one in the cool part of the cage is a good thing (as long as your humidity isn't an issue). Some beardies wold love to just play in the water (They also like baths). During winter it's super dry here (avg 10% humidity) so regular misting and moving the bowl over to the warm end of the enclosure is a must.

    When I bought my Beardie from Petco, or Petsmart, I can't remember which one. He was a little baby, so damn cute! So, I asked the lady to show me everything I need to buy for him. She advised me to buy the starter tank with a very, very, tiny heat bulb. It had to be 10-20 watts, I thought she knew what she was doing, so I bought it. That tiny heat bulb did absolutely nothing! Every time I got him out, he was freezing. I could tell that he was slowly dying, and it was breaking my heart. I then bought him a bigger tank, and the proper lighting; and today, he's a very happy, loving, large, fat Beardie! I love you Smoke! 🦎❤💋

    I got my beardie from Petco and very quickly discovered almost EVERYTHING they had said to do was wrong. So I poured THOUSANDS into a new tank with proper lighting and heat on one side and completely changed his diet. The difference was instant.
    I’ve had him for 5 months now and he LOVES Dubia roaches. I have some set up for breeding and still buy enough to fill his little belly. I try all kinds of foods too. He likes leafy greens and some various worms so I try to give him a variety throughout the day/week. I tend to avoid mealworms due to the fact that sometimes the chitin can make baby beardies a bit constipated, but now that he’s growing I’ve started giving him a couple every now and again. He doesn’t seem a huge fan of fruits so far, but I do keep trying lol.

      @@danabarnhill3465 You shouldn't feed any animal lettuce. It has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. Try greens instead, like turnip greens, dandelion greens (my dragon's favorites), basically if it had the word "greens" in it you should be okay. Always check to see if a fruit or veggie you want to feed your dragons is okay... at all, or just for a sometimes treat, like cherries (pitted), or if they're okay to have every day, like blueberries. I give then a good salad of at least 2 kinds of greens of different texture and a couple types of fruit or berry, like papaya, mango, strawberry with the outer seeds cut or scraped off, never give them anything with seeds large enough you can see. I take raspberries and smoosh then up to get the seeds out and kind of sprinkle the guts on top of the greens like a dressing.
      As for watering, we got a large medicine syringe and fill it warm water mixed with a bit of liquid calcium and just drop the water drop by drop on the end of their, erm... well, we call it their beek because I'm an idiot, but... they'll keep drinking until they're full and then they'll just let it run down their chins until it tickles, which is funny to watch. Never try to stuff the syringe tube it in their mouths. Not only can you hurt their mouths, but you can actually drown your dragon or, at the least, damage their poor little digestive systems.
      I always let my dragons have a turn at walkabout in my home. I have a room with limited furnishings that I let them run around in until they find a dark, cold spot to sleep, then I know they're done. I've a little ramp up to a lizard perch (cat window perch you can get at any pet store and will fit in just about any window unless you have decorative window chair rail type stuff like mine does, then you'll have yourself a DIY project!) And lots of logs and climbing stuff out of hemp rope for them to climb around on.
      I hope I helped you out and/or gave you some ideas to work with. Hope you have a wonderful, love filled life with your beardie!😁💕

      The good thing about beardies is that they're very resilient and hardy lads. In the wild (Australia no less) conditions and food available aren't always gonna be perfect, so naturally they've adapted to make do. Obviously you should try to provide any pet with the best conditions you can realistically manage, but it often takes serious borderline inhumane maltreatment for bearded dragons to show clear issues.

      Dragons usually can't see still water, that's why many people don't see their dragons drink out of water bowls. As the video says, spraying the vegetables and regular baths keep them well hydrated. Two mains signs of dehydration are yellow urates (the white bit in the poo) or very wrinkled skin. If there is a bit of clear liquid on your beardies poo then that'd a good sign of hydration (as long as the whole poo isn't liquid)

    As someone who works at a chain pet store, the struggle to maintain an ideal reptile environment without prompting the uninformed public to call the DOA is a real frustration. Everyone who deals with the reptiles in our store knows their stuff (the department manager wouldn’t allow otherwise,) so we’re left explaining to customers why their setup shouldn’t exactly match ours. We’re lucky that our current management has given us the green light to change the company-mandated substrate and lighting guidelines as we see fit to meet the actual needs of the animals in our care.

    You're absolutely right about humidity and water bowls you do not need and you should not put a water bowl in your bearded dragons vivarium, a shallow bath once a week is enough to give them any extra moisture they might need apart from what they are getting from their food, you gotta remember where these dragons come from

    • @paytonplace2430
      @paytonplace2430 Před měsícem

      I keep a shallow, maybe inch deep, of water slightly from the middle towards the cool side of Clay’s enclosure. He likes to take a dip every now and then and an occasional very small sip while he’s in it. I also mist after he has his protein or when I see him with his mouth slightly open on his basking spot. The humidity stays at around 20% but does jump up into the “tropical” range after misting. So, I don’t think there is an issue with a small water dish as long as you monitor the humidity. With that said, I would remove the water dish if I was not able to keep the humidity down; I believe keeping humidity low is much more important than allowing him to take his little dips. Luckily, I’m able to do both.

    As a pet store animal caretaker, I am very adamant about proper care with my animals, reptiles especially. You’ve made a lot of good points! Not all pet stores are like this, as he makes very clear in this video particularly. But there are quite a few that are like this. If you see a pet shop that you were hoping to purchase an animal from, if it’s known that that particular animal is more solitary, do not purchase one if it is housed with multiple. My bearded dragon personally is a rescue and came from a horrible breeder who housed many together. If you wish to use a water dish, put it in the coldest part of the tank, and make sure its a smaller one. Less water=less humidity.

      Cold Blood Creations I’m a relatively new Beardie “Grandma”. (My Mom thought it was a great idea to buy my son a dragon for his 8th Birthday. (While this is great for some kids, my son is on the spectrum and afraid to touch his dragon. But he’s learning!) I have been helping my son care for “Jeff” for 3 years now, and so far, so good! I’m learning something new about these critters every day. I was just recently told not to have sand in Jeff’s enclosure. I was blown away! What do you suggest I put on the floor of the glass breeder tank? Thanks for any and all help you can offer! (Like many others, I bought the sand and have changed it out several times in the last 3 years. I thought these pet store people knew what they were talking about! Who knew?!?) Keep up the great work, and keep those videos coming!

    I’m a merchandiser ops specialist at petco and it honestly pisses me off when they use sand/ calcium sand but corporate gives us a planogram and we have to use the sand and I have reptiles at home and I’m honest with my customers and tell them what to use and not to use. We use reptile water dishes and keep it very low and keep the humidity 20-30% humidity and we do not use heat pads on the bottom and make sure the breeders we work with we make sure if we are gonna house two or three baby bearded dragons they are from the same litter most of my employees are reptile ppl at heart so we bend the rules to make sure they are appropriately fed, housed and taken care of. Also the information these customers get and tell me is ridiculous it’s about the same as what this video said and I always strive to give them the best and accurate info. I had a customer say their Beardie is “aggressive” and about a month old and I asked if their Beardie hisses and puffs their beard when they aren’t around and run at the glass and they said yes. I told them their Beardie isn’t a asshole he’s just seeing his reflection and thinks it’s another dragon and that stresses them out a lot. Have a background and cover the sides. I use a pepper towel and make sure the glass isn’t squeaky clean so it isn’t so reflective. Also bearded dragons don’t want to be handled and picked up all the time. For me I just place my hand in his terrarium and if he crawls on my hand then I’ll take him out but if he runs away or doesn’t crawl on my hand I leave him alone. Imagine being played with or picked up all the time and someone invading your space when you just aren’t in the mood. It would irritate you too

      Put crickets in their own little tank, a space to hide, water pillow, some fruit and you will have a food source that will last a few days. we can keep 3 dozen large crickets alive for around a week with this method and 3 dozen is about what our guy eats in 3 days

    • @consideritshipped
      @consideritshipped Před 4 lety

      If you have a supplier in your area mid sized Dubia roaches are a good staple for bearded dragons. They can't climb smooth surfaces and will live for two weeks easily (with a piece or two of a fruit). They are not jumpers (like crickets) or flyers and you can keep a couple in the enclosure with the dragon without them dying. My beardie loves them.

    I can't thank you enough for such valuable info. I'm a first time dragon mom of three and I quickly learned that feeding cricket wasn't my cup of tea. I never understood why some people refused to feed meal worms because of their exoskeleton when super worms and crickets too have a hard covering. No more water bowls from now on. Thanks
