  • Hey all.....SO, I wanted to start a series where I watch and react to my favorite scenes from a musical, movie, or play. The first up is Jesus Christ Superstar (2000 film)! Out of all the shows that I have done, this one was the definitely the most unique. I absolutely loved our concept for the show, but sadly, we had to cancel because of stinky COVID (boooooo). However, we do have this extremely entertaining filmed version to watch instead, because HEY, if I can't be doing theater right now, I sure as heck am going to watch it. Anywho, like and subscribe if you enjoy and leave a comment of what I should do next...

"Are they about to kiss?" Is a solid mood for every adaptation of this musical, because they have such deep love for each other and they hurt each other in these upcoming scenes. I love this musical so much

You should see the 1973 movie of this song. It's unapologetically 70s, equally hilarious and great.
    Also, just subbed!

This is what is sometimes referred to jokingly as the “Gay Bar Version”. Judging it as a movie alone, I prefer this version over the 1973 version, but I think the soundtrack and vocal performances are better on the 1973 version, except for a few tracks like the Herods Song.

Soul Dreamer I totally get that. There’s a lot more vibrancy to this version but something so nostalgic and special about the 1973 version ❤️

I discovered the musical only recently and watched the 2018 version first, then the 1973, and then this one, and at first I totally hated it, but the more I started listening I fell in love with it and now this Judas is like my favorite because of how emotional he is.
Idk, despite not quite reaching the notes (and I usually haaate that) he legit made me cry during this scene, he's the only one that made me cry, and I had already seen the scene two times already in two other different versions.

Yo. Little late but I saw this when I was a kid and it randomly popped in my head and I think it’s really interesting. I think it’s suppose to be from Judas prospective which is really interesting and the songs kinda slap. If you do do more reactions of this could you do Pilates trial? I’d love to hear your thoughts on his voice

It's really too bad your first experience with this epic Rock Opera was with this train wreck. It really felt like a college auditorium set than an actual movie set. The 1973 version is so much better as it actually has several real locations and not just one room with different set pieces for each scene.

I definitely liked some parts of this version, but for me nothing compares to the 1973 one. This one certainly provides some amusement though, like when it feels like Jesus and Judas are playing tag around the table 😂

You keep on saying the word extra. I think theater actors need to be a little over the top on order for the audience to see them in the back row. Hence, a little bit of over-exaggeration is needed to express this. As long as the actors make different choices and not always stick with the same form of manipulation (the methodology and ways about achieving what my character wants), then that's what really matters. Besides, I think overacting is very common in college, but as you work on your craft, you begin to realize if you should act more subtle like film or bigger than life like that of the stage.
Unfortunately, many of us don't really get the chance to act after college. Yes, there's always community theater and going to audition at a CC. However, the sad reality of the working world is,the centrifugal force which breaks us apart.
However, if you do live in a city where there is a local film market, every once in awhile you might get the chance to be an extra or get a supporting role. Lol. I had a line in a fan film Highlander Dark Places, (which used to be a 40 minute short called Dark Beginnings). Yes. I was so "extra," but I had fun.
In fact, if you want to see my c- acting, I still have a video on the bottom of The Crucible which I did for Acting for Film and Television and even another short I was in for another drama class.

Gotta say the 1973 versions of Jesus and Judas both are spectacular. It’s the only version I think of as the “real” Jesus Christ Superstar!

I saw Tim Minchin at the Sydney performance & it was fantastic. I've also seen the videos of the concert/arena style version with John Farnham as Jesus and a cast full of wonderful Aussie musicians. I The version with Glenn Carter & Jérôme Pradon, etc, was a rock musical theatrical version performed in a theatre, then filmed. I've also heard the Ian Gillan version. I enjoy them all , they seen to be representative of their times.I think that the acting required in theatre is different to films so this version might look overdone up close & personal rather than seen at a distance in a theatre. I don't know much about the technical side of music & singing, but I enjoyed this version as much as the others.

The chalice is so huge, the acting is so dramatic, it's so extra, because this is a recording of a stage show, not a movie. I saw this version of the stage show live, this is the same cast and scenery, props, costumes etc, but recorded without the audience for DVD. If you want the actual movie Then watch the 70's version. PS, this is actually my favorite version. But so many hate it. You talk about your version was modernizing it, genderbenind it. You realize that's exactly what this version tried to do and every hated it (except me)

    • @donnam5891
