I love it so much that I almost listen to it every day, I also performed it when I was in 11th grade playing judas. I have played jesus in different plays of the passion of the christ for 15 years, and no, I still don't believe in any God! The emotional toll it took on Jesus a man who is fully man and God at the same time with all the anxietys and problems we all have as humans to know that he will die. JEEEZ. I like the way they portray Judas as not just evil but rather as a doubter who because of his doubt does something evil it really makes it so you can see yourself in Judas if you ever had doubts (like I used to). They also humanize Jesus showing him having the same problems we do but over comes them all and I just find it so inspiring.

    It was brilliant decision by the director to film the Garden scene from above looking down at Jesus from the viewpoint of God. It not only emphasizes the point that Jesus is engaging in a dialogue but it also makes Jesus appear small and vulnerable.

    This story is so beautiful. Really makes you see and understand the humanity of the people involved in this, which makes their sacrifice all the more meaningful. I feel like the creators of Jesus Christ Superstar understood the message of Jesus way better than many modern-day christians and even members of the Catholic Church. And Judas, who has been portrayed as evil throughout history, makes so much more sense as a person in this representation of him than in all the tales I was taught in the 10 years that I spent in a Catholic school. Really JCSS is an outstanding piece of art and it's a shame that some people think (our thought in the past) that this play/movie was wrong for the way on which it told the story of the last days of Jesus Christ.

    I used to be a dancer and our recital theme one year was "Happy Birthday Broadway". I was digging for broadway songs that spoke to me and found Gethsemane. I did my solo to it but by a different artist and I had to hold back tears while performing because it hit on such a spiritual level but as a dancer you have to tap into your emotions so it was a struggle but beautiful performance. The next year was a struggle too lol. "At The Movies" was that theme and I chose "Who Wants To Live Forever" by Queen from Highlander. Man dancing is such an emotional experience when you're telling a story through your body movements and facial expressions. Don't know where i was going with all that but there you go😂

    Have you noticed that when Judas sings at the beginning of the movie the scenario is similar to when Jesus sings in despair and doubt after the last supper? One with sun and arid terrain, the other at night and between rocks that he is climbing... this movie is full of symbolism. Another example is when Judas, after he dies, sings, he appears as a rock star while Jesus is never seen again.

    A was directed by Norman Jewison, a brilliant director who also directed Fiddler On The Roof before this. In fact, it was on the set of Fiddler that this idea was presented to him. Barry Dennen, who sings the part of Pilate on both the original record and in this movie and was also playing a role in Fiddler, presented the album to Norm and Jewison loved the idea of a movie from the album.
    He took the idea to Universal who green lit the movie and the rest is history. Norm is the reason this movie is such a work of art. Norm cast both Neeley and Anderson as the roles of Judas and Jesus. What a great casting choice. I spoke to Ted once he told me that he wasn’t even in the running for the part since there were bigger names already being considered, but he took Norm out to lunch one day and was able to convince him he was the right choice. Norm style is imprinted all over the direction, his shot choices and use of crane shots are beautiful. This wouldn’t be the same without Norm and would have never happened.

    "LIsten, Jesus, to the warning I give...." from 3 miles away.... ;) Anderson and Neeley both are amazing singers. I don't know if you're familiar with the custom, but the part at the start of Gethsemane where Jesus asks "will no one wait with me?" is actually from the Bible, and there are some Catholic churches where you can sign up to be the designated "waiter," the person who waits with Jesus. Each person picks the hour of the day, and day of the week, that works best for them, but the chapel is never empty. Whatever hour it is, someone is waiting.

I suffered a spinal cord injury, and am a singer. The first time I was able to really belt out a song again was in the shower, to Gethsamane. When I get overwhelmed, I listen to it and sing it loud. I'm no Jesus by any means, but it makes me feel better. It's really cool to see your pops bringing this type of music to the channel. Cheers from Texas, y'all!

      I have heard "believers" say that the power and beauty of this show must have been inspired by God. And it was, in a way- inspired by the story, of God, at least-and it is undeniably powerful, if read uncritically. But the basic story is so illogical that you must wonder how it ever became so popular (God has a son with a girl who was was not asked for her consent, and the son is is also God but at the same time isn't really God, and he knows it but doesn't know it, meaning he isn't perfect and all knowing after all, so that this God-son-man can die to redeem humans of the sins they have committed because their God-given natures cause them to sin- and so God permits his son to be horribly tortured and murdered (what a Dad!), but then makes it all right by resurrecting him so that God can forgive humanity for the unforgivable sin of being human, so that they can go on living, and sinning, just like before, and, well- I get lost right around there. But as for the "divine inspiration" behind this wonderful show, I find it infinitely more amazing to believe that it was all done by human beings- very talented human beings- who not only didn't need divine intervention, but would have turned it down if offered. One of the greatest of all the evils wrought by religion upon this world was the insistence that human beings count for so very, very little, and that only God can do great things- so man gets blamed for everything bad, but God gets all the credit for everything good. No wonder the human race has been such a paranoid mess for all these years...

    They call it a musical while my opinion is that it`s a rock opera.....and I love it...... saw it with school when it was out and I was 12...... so 50 years ago (well almost) What an event that was, and it sparked the love for rock, symphonic rock and metal...... and next June we go to see a Dutch version in the theaters...... can`t wait.

    I watch your channel from time to time, but found you while searching for the TV special with John Legend to watch tonight. I love Tim Minchin as Judas version one can find on CZcams as well. Saw the movie in the theater as a 9 year old. I always enjoy the different interpretations. For instance, the light making the cross at the crucifixion of Legend's production is gorgeous if you haven't seen it.

    Never seen The FrontRoom until today. I am now subscribed and full bell ringing notifications. One of my all time fav films JCSS.
    My two fav songs also.
    Firstly, I really enjoyed observing you both watching this. Your relationship is so adorable.
    Kai was very discerning in his observations and his thoughts on the subject matter. I esp liked his take on the Gethsemane song - how Jesus walked away from those He came to save in order to make His way to God for the strength He needed to go through with it. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
    His human frailty, like us, He needed to be made ready. He is teaching us only by going to the Father, God, can we be strengthened to take this journey as a disciple of Jesus. We could NEVER do it in our own strength without His Holy Spirit.
    In the Bible He went away three times for an hour to pray (for three hours in total ) and it says that He sweat drops of blood (Luke 22:44) because He was made flesh - Almighty God having to become a human man in order to fulfil His destiny. Be the saviour of humanity - IF, we choose to follow Him.
    It’s important to remember, Tim Rice was not and is not a believer. It amazes me how he can write such lyric and not be a believer.
    The lyrics he wrote ‘what I started, what You started, I didn’t start it.’
    Are his own thoughts and not Biblically accurate. As
    Jesus Himself, chose to be the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world. He and God are ONE. Here is scripture:
    “Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne.”
    ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬
    It really surprised me that you two are not Christians. Hope you both decide to accept Jesus’ as Lord one day. By far the best decision I ever made.
    Lastly, in the beginning I really laughed at the way his dad corrected himself when he started to sing with Judas - I did laugh. I do that too.
    Love you both. Apologies this was such a long post.
    I had a lot to say 🙏🏼❤️‍🔥😂

    I love the fact that he makes the commitment to die before he has the visions of his future depictions. That says to me he committed to the plan with no assurance that it would be worth it, and the visions were sent to help firm up the commitment, not make him commit in the first place. Also the constant climb as he searches for his answers but stops climbing as soon as he has them. A more Human Jesus is always more compelling then a more Divine Jesus. This is a Jesus that CAN walk away but CHOOSES not to. A Devine Jesus would never walk away because it was pre-ordained. There would be no free choice. Jesus choosing to sacrifice himself actually is a sacrifice because he is giving up his life when he didn't actually have to.

    • @ginnieplato2871
      @ginnieplato2871 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Interesting-I have heard/read analysis of the “real” story of Jesus (me being a fan of history and spiritual study rather than religious myself) that a miracle-performingJesus could have saved himself by escaping if he wanted to, but chose to sacrifice himself for a larger purpose. “Gethsemane” lyrics are beyond beautiful

    • @viwererschoice4454
      @viwererschoice4454 Před 3 měsíci

      @ginnieplato2871 Exactly! He absolutely COULD have saved himself, but he had to sacrifice himself as the "Scrificial Lamb of God" because he took our guilt for the Original Sin unto himself. That is why when they say "If you believe in Jesus, you are Saved". According to scripture (IIRC) it is only through him that we only carry the guilt of our own actions and not those of Adam. So Jesus committing that Sacrifice was a purely Selfless act, as he had no grantee that his life would have worth until God sent that vision in Gethsemane.

    I was 18 in the summer of 1973 and was enthralled by this movie. So much so that I actually went to the drive-in movie theater by myself at least three times to watch it. I have seen it many more times since. One of my all-time favorites. And I love Heaven on their minds. I am not a subscriber to any organized religion then, or now. For me, its a spiritual perspective rather than a religious one. I believe Judas was not a bad man, but was driven by social and political imperative rather than religious, much like the Christians of today. He followed Jesus in his shadow instead of his footsteps. Jesus came to this place to deliver a message and is an ascended master, much like Buddha and muhammad, among others. Thank you for this.

    Hi just found you guys.❤ Dad i totally agree with your love and passion for this album. I grew up with this my big Brother and i considered this our church visit. listened to it every year..still do and I'm not religious at all...actually turned agnostic at a young age but i Love every thing about this album incredible singers.. The words. Man..still cry when they beat Jesus .grew to love Pontius Pilate part big time.❤ i laughed hard when you told your son 'there's no talking at all I this movie' and he responded like 'yeah i think it's weird in musicals how they just break into song'' 😂 All i could think of is Monty Python Holy Grail...lol.. The castle scene when the sickly-looking son keeps wanting to break into song and the Father keeps stopping him ..hilarious. It's Python right. Anyway sorry so long love your reactions.😊p.s. the nuns and priests in the catholic school i attended consider this 'bad' ??? With all respect to Ted Neeley who was really great in the movie, but one has to hear Ian Gillan's performance on the JCS album. Gillan (of the Deep Purple fame) was the original Jesus, the vocal parts were written for him specifically.. and his intepretation shapes the role to this day. He was a vocal powerhouse on the JCS album already, though his vocal peak came a few years later (as witnessed on Deep Purple Made In Japan).

    Hello guys, I’ve just stumbled across your video as was looking at JCS stuff. I’m going to see it at the theatre, live, soon (third time in about 20 yrs). My partner and I are going, he has never seen it, or the movie (I know, right?). We’re in our 50s, I was brought up catholic and, like you, I no longer consider myself as religious, but this movie is right up there for me… the music, the lyrics, the performances… just wow! It’s a work of genius… I must have been seven or eight when I first saw this and I used to think Gethsemane was the really long, “boring” song but it’s my outright favourite for all the same reasons you said. Closely followed by Heaven On Their Minds. Ted and Carl are meant for these roles, Ted is still singing this song… never fails to move me. Btw, you have raised a wonderful young man, he “got” these songs right away. Greetings from Scotland ❤
