    About the emoting with his eyes comment - Tim mentioned at one point it's tricky being a comedian when you're stuck behind a piano. You can't rely on hand and body movements (as much, obviously he still does a little bit) so he has to really rely on his facial expressions for the comedy. He said that's also a reason he wears the guyliner - so his eyes are easier to read.

      Tim's portrayal as Judas at the end breaks me every time, you can see the pain and tears in his eyes so vividly. Say what you like about Tim but he is a showman and a true performer, he's such an underrated actor. Both seasons of Upright broke me as well, he knows how to make people feel deep empathy for the characters he portrays.

    Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the biggest musicals in the history of musicals. It's also quite secular, with the divinity of the Jesus character left to the audience's imagination.

      I mean, it's not as if christains agree on Jesus' divinity. It's still hotly debated among theologians and there is no agreement among all the christian sects either.

    Jesus CHRIST Superstar (one of my favorite rock operas.) Nobody (so far) can beat Carl Anderson on this song (IMO) but Tim did an amazing job. I have seen his performance in the death scene - he was absolutely incredible. I LOVE his voice and the acting was incredible.

    Tim Minchin performing Superstar is also excellent! This is my favorite version of this show! The updated modern flair they've created (similar to the Occupy Wall Street protests in the early 2000s) was an excellent choice, I feel. And Tim's rendition of Judas is my FAVORITE so far!

    Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS) isn't a musical, it's a rock opera. The difference is a musical is typically humorous or sentimental and has spoken dialogue. An opera is a drama that is sung straight through without spoken dialogue. There is no spoken dialogue in JCS and it is sung straight through in 90 minutes. The music is composed in an 8-beat rock rhythm, performed with rock instruments, and sung in an operatic and rock vocal style, classifying this iconic production as a rock opera. It was originally released as a concept album, and when the movie was released it was very controversial. I still have the original "Brown Album" released in 1970...I know all the words because I've been singing this since I was nine 😄Once this amazing rock opera gets in your head, it never leaves! There was definitely costuming...the casual, modern clothing is intentional. The costuming, set, and dance interpretation are different in each performance, but the costuming is always casual and modern. The songs are always the same, because that's the story as told through the eyes of Judas. The sympathy for Judas you picked up on is also an intentional part of the story.

    No, you were right, this particular show is from 2013 I think! If you want more from Tim as Judas I recommend the songs: Dammed for all Time and Superstar. And the casting is actually perfect, the show is not technically religious, when it was made in the 70s religious people didn't like it very much because it paints Jesus as a human and Judas as a relatable character. The John Legend version is from 2018 and while he is fine, the guy that play Judas there is my favorite since the original movie.

    Context - Jesus Christ Superstar is specifically "the last week of Jesus' life AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF JUDAS". It's almost always set in modern times. The definitive version of this track is almost certainly the one from the original soundtrack album from 1970 here: czcams.com/video/H3vtAjHvhHA/video.html

    Broadway musicals have always been very edgy in themes and concepts. This one was originally performed in the 70s as a rock opera and shocked everyone.
    Having an internationally known atheist play Judas was perfect casting.
    Tim has written words and music for 2 Broadway and West End musicals himself "Matilda" based on the Roahl Dahl book that the Danny DeVito movie was made from (Tim's version is quite different from that) and Groundhog Day adapted from the movie.

    • @jackwhitbread4583
      @jackwhitbread4583 Před 2 měsíci

      Tim's version is different because it follows the book much more than the Danny De vito one did, the movie based on stage play is also infinitely more heartbreaking and it gets me every single time I've watched it.

    I siltill own the original soundtrack for Jesus Christ, Superstar on vinyl from when I purchased it in the early 70"s. An absolutely amazing musical with incredible songs throughout, it made me appreciate musical theater at a time when me and my no-nothing pubescent friends were all into rock and very little else. Of course, when I discovered this video of Tim performing as Judas some time ago, I was ecstatic to hear it. I'm happy to see you react to it.

    Leonard Cohen who wrote Jesus Christ Superstar set the musical in the modern world. His goal was not to do just another retelling of the biblical story, but to use it as a vehicle to illustrate the ongoing struggle between those who labor for peace and freedom and their oppressors. It was written in 1970, so it was at the height of the Vietnam war. There were constant anti-war demonstrations. The Kent State Massacre happened that year where U.S. soldiers fired on student demonstrators on a college campus. So, it greatly resembled the Roman occupation of Palestine during the first century. The Jesus character is very like MLK or Malcolm X, and both of them were idolized by their followers and eventually murdered for their words. It's probably one of the most thoughtful musical plays of the 20th century. Everyone should see it, if they get the chance.

    The musical has aged pretty well imo. The part of Jesus was originally sung by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, crafting the part after his voice and unfortunately making every subsequent Jesus a pale copy. You should check out the original version of Gethsemane, it's around YT somewhere (just make sure it's Gillan)

    The whole point of JCS is that Judas might be right but he's also still wrong. Ultimately it doesn't matter if Jesus is God or not - it's the fact that he represents hope and for whatever reason Judas has lost his hope.
    Tim's performance of Superstar near the end is insanely fun.

    • @jackwhitbread4583
      @jackwhitbread4583 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Not the way I see it, I see Judas as the good guy. You really should try reading the bible because there are many many instances in the New Testament where Jesus is deeply problematic and deeply abusive. Anyone who tells slaves the must obey their masters, even the cruel ones is not a good guy. Jesus got too big for his boots and his demise was his own fault.

    • @alphaomega2117
      @alphaomega2117 Před 2 měsíci

      @@jackwhitbread4583 If you want problematic then nothing beats old Testament God - "hmmm people are annoying me - time for another Genocide - I think I'll send the Angel of Death to kill babies this time!"
      I was talking about the show itself - Jesus represents hope and Judas the loss of it - whether Judas is right about things or not is sort of irrelevant as his decisions aren't based on doing the right thing but rather on the fear of what will happen if they keep doing what they are doing. He could simply walk away but he wont do that instead he chooses a far darker path fulfilling his own destiny by fully embracing his own hopelessness.
      It's kept obscure as to whether Jesus is the Messiah or not - and it sort of doesn't matter in the context of the show. What he represents is the hope for something better and Judus chooses to betray that hope out of fear and a bit of jealousy.
      So whilst Judas might be right about them setting a dangerous course with their actions he's totally wrong in setting a far more dangerous one with his betrayal. His logic is deeply flawed. His realisation of that leads to his death. He's a tragic anti-hero who could of been great but chose mediocrity and failure because of his fear. Had he not his fate may not have been different - we will never know but like I said for all the things he is right about he is ultimately wrong.

    The original, 70's Rock Opera Jesus Christ Superstar is excellent! That and Godspell. It speaks to the younger crowd telling the story leading up to the betrayal of and Crucifixion of Jesus. Minchin sings well, but doesn't act too well. Nice to hear at least. Thanks!
