You can also use bump map instead for nurling, so you don't need to duplicate the material (there are some cool ways to convert normal to height inside of blender), hope this will help you

Finally someone who covers weapons modelling in blender hope you cover texturing in blender 2 on the Q2 of 2024 we would have 3d brush for texture painting that would be a game changer and a free addon names ucupainter would provide so many great things just for this work i would love this as a tutorial series or course either i would be happy

I have a question though. I tried my first model of a futuristc gun and for the adjustible stock I used a boolean difference to cut the slot for the cylinder of the adjustable stock out from the receiver. This resulted in a to of fubar geometry that I had to fix by hand. Is there a better way to do something like that?

Why does your blender look different? Its darker and the cube is different completely? Is it a plugin, if so what plugin?
You can change this in edit > preferences > themes or something like that

Dude, you want to model AK. But the weapons in the first reference images are AKM. Yes, they look very similar, but when you go into detail, they are slightly different weapons. You probably want to model a TYPE 3 AK, right?
