    Never let a shipper dictate how you secure your load. Just agree while you're there, then when you leave, stop and do what's required by DOT and make you feel comfortable. If DOT sees that you only have one piece of securement on each piece, you're screwed. Not to mention if that one strap breaks, you're career is in jeopardy. Be safe my friend

  • @happypappy6371
    @happypappy6371 Pƙed 27 dny +10

    The ductwork was twisting on the trailer due to only one strap. Each stack should have two straps. Remember, you are in charge of that truck, not the shipper. if they don't want to do it as you know it needs to be done, refuse the load. When something happens on the highway and DOT is there with their ticket book, the shipper is not going to run out and say, "We told her to do it that way."

      How did I rush securement? I secured it how they demanded. Or else I was damaging the load. Yall are easy to say what to do when you aren’t in others shoes. I should’ve had it offloaded there was no other way. And no I couldn’t strap it from the middle bars either. I would’ve just lost a week of work and costed the company. But I made it. Move on.

  • @marktaylor6837
    @marktaylor6837 Pƙed 27 dny +21

    My two cents:
    I have an idea for strapping that ductwork if you ever have to do another load of them.
    Hook the strap on the side of your trailer as normal and throw the strap up over the first side/wall. Bring the thrown end diagonally down through the ductwork to the other side of the trailer attachment point. Only take up the slack on the first one. Repeat the same thing from the other side of the trailer. Alternately tighten each one until they're tight. You need to alternate a couple of times to insure that you don't shift the load off center. The diagonal strapping technique will cancel the shifting each way. I realize you'll need twice as many straps but it will be worth the peace of mind.
    Another two cents:
    Get yourself a length of light rope that will reach over the top of your load to the ground on the other side. Somehow attach something akin to a softball to the end of the rope. Now you can throw the ball (or whatever) over your load with the light rope trailing behind. Now tie-off the light rope to the end of your strap and pull it up over your load from the other side. Should work in theory.
    Now if I can just figure out how to change my smartphone ringtone to you saying, "You Ate My Chicken", that would make my day!
    I admire your work ethic Becca. You stay safe out there little one.
    All the best from Massachusetts!

    • @markhunter3263
      @markhunter3263 Pƙed 27 dny +2

      @@chadpflanz8745 I don’t think regular dunnage would have cut it. Looking at the load, you’d need 10 ft wide pieces, which I’ve never seen anybody carrying around on the back of their truck. Looks like the shipper tried using regular 8 foot wide pieces in conjunction with smaller pieces because they didn’t have anything wide enough. Which was why they kept falling off like she was saying.

    @darylthisdelle7702 Pƙed 27 dny +8

    One strap on each bundle was just an accident waiting to happen. You got lucky with that load, BRB. But then that’s all ya need sometimes is a little luck. I bet you learned a few things on that load. You know your in trouble when an office worker is trying to tell you how to do your job. It’s a bit different rolling down the highway at 65 at 40 ton than sitting in front of a key board and you just broke your nail, poor thing. Been there done that and got the T-Shirt. Some loads just can’t get off quick enough. Great video, shows how shippers put drivers lives in harms way. If that would have fallen off, guess who’s at fault. Anywho BRB, have a great and a safe day, happy trails to you, D..

    22:30 _"BTW It’s a ticket for leaving oversize load signs on when no longer having permitted load!!!"_
    Many years ago I was about half way through a multi-day, multi-stop delivery. I had just started climbing a mountain in SC toward the NC lane. I’m in about the highest gear I can run and still navigate the winding two-lane road pulling a 48’ box. The line of cars behind me was getting longer. Then I met an oversize escort coming down the mountain with a banner on his front bumper. I slowed down all the way down to second gear in anticipation of meeting a bigger truck. Now the line of cars following behind me was rapidly growing.
    After driving about a mile in second gear without meeting a truck, I got on the radio and asked “Is there an oversize load coming down the mountain?” No reply, and I never met a truck. The escort was just driving off-duty still displaying his oversize banner.
    After slowing down, I’m stuck in 2nd gear for the rest of the climb. There wasn’t anywhere to pull over until beyond the summit. When I finally was able to pull over, about thirty cars drove past and several displayed their displeasure with my slow driving.
    To that escort driver still displaying his banner, thanks a lot buddy! You caused frustration for a lot of other drivers, and made me look like the idiot.

    Becca you got very lucky on that one. DOT requirements are 1 strap 5ft or less and 2 straps for 10 ft. On a full load you would need 5 straps for 40 ft. Definitely needed two 2 three straps on each unit. Dont let shipper tell you otherwise. They said one strap because the are worried about bending the units. Would recommned corner protectors also. Here is a little trick to help you. I will try to explain but sometimes you have to see too understand. Maybe ill make a video. LOL. Pull out as much strap as you think youll need. Roll the strap just like you were doing. About 6 ft from trailer take the roll in your hand and fold it forward over your extra strap. Grab the extra strap and let it and the strap you rolled up and let it fall back. You want to make large loop with the rolled up strap at the bottom. This will create a sling. Now you can really get some momentum with the strap and it takes all the stress off your shoulders. Also works great when it is very w indy. Stay safe.
    PS there are several videos on you tube to help ya.

    I run lowboy,some times My loads are tall. I got like a 50" foot rope like 3/8" inch, tied a hook on one end for a weight, through the rope with hook on it over the load, secure it to strap & pull rope back with strap, much easier than trying to throw the straps.

    That was a wobbly load, sandals driving not good. God bless Safe driving. I really admire your ability to do flat bed loads. Maybe consider Referrer loads.

    I would've strapped the inside support bars so it couldn't move.

    Should have just tossed the straps straight up and down on either side, to pull straight down to eliminate the shifting of the load

    Hey Becca how are you? I saw you last Friday May 17th, you were going east bound as I was going westbound on I-80 in Omaha Nebraska and I did call you on the CB radio but I couldn’t get no answer from you. Yeah it looks like that the shipper that you got the load from did you wrong 😑 but I’m glad you made it to your destination safely. Take care and have a good weekend.

    Try tying a rope to a tennis ball(or something else throwable with a little weight to it) on one end and the free end around your strap hook that needs to be thrown over. Make sure the rope is long enough(like 25-50 feet from home depot) so that theres slack when u throw the ball over. Then u can pull the whole strap over the top no problem and straighten it after its over. I used to do that when hauling railroad ties that were too wide and tall for me to climb on.

    Was that parking lot really uneven?
    The cab of your truck was really rocking.
    Inspect your shocks and cab airbags.
