  • @CrossOutBryce
    @CrossOutBryce Před 2 lety +7

    Love the back and forth on this rewatch, especially Nick and Carboni!
    Can't say I agree with the majority on this one though. The characterization in SM2 is just on point. Tim keeps saying Raimi movies are 60's Spider-Man, saying the struggle Peter goes through day to day as overexaggerated, but here, he's dealing with so many relatable struggles, especially for those in their 20s, when he's just trying to do the right thing and find a way to keep moving forward.
    Whenever he does something dumb or neglects responsibilities & relationships (you guys pointed out the stupid shit he'd do), Peter then has to deal with that huge pile of consequences from his stupid ass actions. It's the one character trait that's been consistent through all of the mainline comics, the PS4 game, and it's what this movie is ALL ABOUT.
    A major reason people don't put these new MCU movies above this one isn't because of the action, the acting, or the villains. It's because this core trait of Spider-Man -- having to deal with responsibility and serious, lasting consequences of his actions -- isn't really there in the new movies (again, hoping NWH proves me wrong!).
    To each their own though! Excited to hear what y'all gotta say on Franco in SM3 😂

  • @DoingOK
    @DoingOK Před 2 lety +15

    I wish I had a better understanding of what Spider-Man is to Tim. Being overwhelmed and down on his luck is pretty core to the character imo. MCU spidey is way too happy go lucky for me and I don’t like that his quips are just him being a wide eyed kid and saying the same stuff he’d say outside of the suit.

    • @AlexLove631
      @AlexLove631 Před 2 lety +6

      Exactly. Spidey is full of sadness and anger. In pretty much every iteration of the comics, it’s like that. My issue with MCU Spidey is that he feels dumbed-down, especially the overall tone.
      Far From Home was the biggest offender in that sense. His supporting cast aren’t even characters with arcs. For example, I understood what they were going for with Ned’s “relationship” to Betty, but the execution was piss-poor and felt like something from the Disney channel.

    • @jizzledoops6789
      @jizzledoops6789 Před 2 lety +5

      The Raimi side characters have arcs but they're all terrible lol. Except May, really.

    • @AlexLove631
      @AlexLove631 Před 2 lety +4

      @@jizzledoops6789 May is fantastic, but I’d argue the others have great arcs as well. In the first movie, MJ breaks the cycle of abuse she’s experienced with men (like her father and her romantic relationships) when she realizes her worth and falls for Peter, a man who actually respects her and treats her well.
      I also believe Harry has a pretty good arc that is nailed in Spider-Man 3.

    • @thedefinitionisthis
      @thedefinitionisthis Před 2 lety +4

      Being overwhelmed and down on his luck is part of Spidey…. But it’s just that it’s never robbed Peter of any form of personality or confidence, the way it had with the Raimi movies. Peter has always been able to take things in stride and still have personality, even a sense of humor. Even when things REALLY suck, and he does want to quit being Spider-Man, he still has a personality, and is somewhat defiant. One of the things I personally love about SpiderMan is his sense of humor, his quick wit and non-stop one liners. That’s what make him so fun and engaging to watch. It always bugged me that the Raimi movies never injected that kind of personality to Spidey, because they elected to make Peter SUCH a push-over, and someone so inherently introverted, and unable to speak for himself. We all appreciate a lovable loser, but I think that choice really hurt the SpiderMan persona in the Raimi movies, because in the suit, he lacked any personality or sense of fun. And if he did make quips, they weren’t really clever;, they just came off awkward, because we know this version himself is awkward. Sorry, but I’ll take Holland’s version over him. At least there, it’s acknowledged that he talks too much. And yes, he still says stuff he’d say outside of his suit; that’s always been the case. Regardless of whether he has the mask on or off, he was gonna be himself. Probably the only thing he would actively do In suit, that he wouldn’t so openly out of it, is mouth of to JJ lol. To go back to Raimi’s Peter saying things in the suit, that he would out of it is a negative for me, because outside of the suit, Peter Parker is spineless and just isn’t personable; and unfortunately that translates to his Spider-Man persona. That’s just my take, and probably where Tim falls too. I just can’t imagine Tobey’s version of Spidey pulling of the one-liners and dialogue we get from the character in the comics and cartoons. Holland and even Garfield fit those moods better. I totally understand where Carboni is coming from, but I'm also glad he acknowledged that the movie might've "over-done it" a bit with this movie.

    • @DoingOK
      @DoingOK Před 2 lety

      @@thedefinitionisthis to be clear, I don’t personally feel that any Spidey movie has nailed the character 100%. Toby’s spidey definitely was missing the humor and charisma. Tom’s misses the weight of the world on his shoulders aspect to me. Also, I always felt the mask allowed Peter to let loose and make jokes that he wouldn’t have the confidence to say without it on. The mask and humor were a combined defense mechanism.

    I love how long these episodes are. Keep it coming!!! Lol but yea, Spidey 2 is still an elite comic book film that transcends the genre.
    As I’ve stated before, the filmmaking done by Sam Raimi and his team on these movies (even Spidey 3, which isn’t nearly as bad as some say) is on another level. The absolute craftsmanship is insane, and sours my experience with other Spidey movies.
    The characterization, the writing, the score, the blending of CGI and practical, and cinematography are legitimately great. Sam’s movies feel like proper films. They’re honest, human, and full of style. Stuff like that is what MCU Spidey is mostly missing for me (I liked Homecoming a lot tho). These feel like event films in a way I don’t think live action Spidey has felt since then.

      I fear that the No Way Home review will be really short like Endgame. Those straight-out-of-the-theater reviews are so much shorter.

    Haven't finished the episode yet, but in defense of Pete trying poetry on MJ: Peter may be a scientific genius, but when it comes to juggling a love life he's a complete idiot. Can't recall in the comics, but I feel like I remember various moments in the 90s show and Spectacular Spider-Man where he screws the pooch. Yeah reading poetry in a time where poetry is irrelevant makes the moment one of the worst scenes of Peter trying to salvage a relationship. (Still love it though, I found it kind of endearing, like "Bad strategy Pete, but I appreciate the effort".

    I kinda wished they had mentioned that Sam Raimi was one of the guys with the backpack that smacked Peter in the head.

    2:04:54 -- Wouldn't it be hilarious if he just kept a stack of them on his person to leave places?
    Also, whose handwriting was better, Peter Parker's note to J.J. in Spider-Man 2, or Bruce Wayne's note to The Penguin in Batman Returns? Could you imagine having your ENTIRE FUCKING COVER BLOWN because you went to KINKOS?

    All this rewatch is teaching me is that we need Evil Dead in Review so Tim can understand why these movies are so weird

    Loving this series, always enjoy Anthony stopping by, any chance you guys could normalize the audio a bit as part of how you publish? You all have various energy and when the conversation explodes it can be jarring/require quick volume adjustments. I think it will help fans who watch/listen in the evening with sleeping spouses and children.
    CZcams should just have an option for this on all platforms - but unfortunately they leave it up to the creators.

    MJ in the Raimi movies is a better character than MJ in the MCU

    Im sorry but Spider-Man 2 is the greatest Spider-Man movie. Yes, we're watching a movie and frankly, the last scene between MJ and Peter is the Casablanca moment of superhero movies.
    After X-Men Days of Future Past, Spider-Man 2 is the greatest CBM ever made. Sorry, Dark Knight fans.
