The History of Mounts in Game - WCmini Facts

  • Heres a few things about how mounts use to work in their first forms. Each race got to ride their own racial mount, and had to buy special training to ride those mounts. Like Dwarfs needed to learn Ram riding to ride ram mounts, or Orcs needing wolf riding to ride wolfs. You could then purchase riding of other racial mounts if you managed to get exalted reputation with those races in patch 1.2. The original levels for mounts were level 40 for the 60% mount, and level 60 for the epic mounts, or the 100% speed mounts. When you bought a mount, You could use it as long as you were high enough level. And you used the mount from your bag. Mounts required a 3 second cast time to mount up, and dismounted you if you entered combat or touch water. Also the mounts themselves were expensive. Being able to actually buy the mounts at level if it was your first character and not an alt was pretty rare. The level 40 60% speed mount costed 100g, and the level 60 100% speed mount costed 1000gold. To adjust for inflation, getting 1000 gold in vanilla wow was almost like farming 500k gold in legion. If you were to compare the amount of time and effort it took to get that much gold to today. It was pretty common for people to just, not be able to afford one.

    i still remember how it felt when i was running scarlet monastery on my first character and one of my party members traded me 100g when i mentioned in chat that i still couldn’t afford the lvl 40 mount. I think i was lvl 43 or 44 at the time, and it was one of those moments that really hooked me for the long run

      When I hit level 40 on my first character I didn't know how much mounts cost, so I didn't have anywhere near enough gold saved up. I started farming random mobs for gold, and before I hit level 41 I found a Staff of Jordan which I sold on the AH for 400g. All of my friends who had to farm for days/weeks to save enough gold for mounts were pissed.

    • @METerrell
      @METerrell Před 5 lety +4

      That's what I was thinking - what about the flying carpet added in BC for tailors. Then two different carpets in Wrath of the Lich King, though those were just variations in color - a sort of pink/purple that you trained for initially and then the frosty blue color that you had to buy the pattern for and took special mats to craft.
      Wrath also introduced the first mount you crafted for two people, but only on ground in the motorcycles. And the Stonedrake is harder to make than he indicates. You have to look for a special scroll in archaeology (still required) that only had a small chance of being in the urn artifact you found and it takes a while for the urn to be one of your artifacts. And its a BOP recipe, so there's no chance of you finding it on one of your toons that isn't trained in alchemy and mailing it to the one you have that is an alchemist and also no selling it on auction.

    I remember finally getting my cold weather flying in wrath on my Druid
    And then flying as high as it would let me, and turning off flight form. Then remounting right before hitting the ground.
    I don't know why, but it was highly amusing to me. Then again, I'm someone who finds healing to be fun, so maybe something's just off with me. Maybe it's the absolute power of deciding whether someone lived or died, and at any time, I could just choose to not remount.
    Or something equally philosophical.

Also played on an RPPVP server and learned that you could actually switch to bear form like, a few feet from the ground while falling, and maul unsuspecting Alli players to death, heard it was quite "a thing" for a while. I think it was called "druid bombing".

      @basillah7650 Před 5 lety +5

      Wrong, It required you to fly out to the barrens so not 5 seconds and if you were undead you had to wait for the zep to take you to org then travel from there if you did not get the flight paths from leveling on eastern kingdoms then you have to run to the quest giver in the barrens because you had no mount yet so it would take over 20 minutes or more so not 5 seconds.

    You forgot to mention that if you couldn't affort cold weather flying in wrath, you could actually get a special mount that could only fly 60%, no matter what skill you had, and you could actually mount this while running/falling etc :) They added this because a lot of people got stuck before Icecrown and Storm Peaks, because you could barely enter the main zone without flying, so there was no real convenient way to farm the gold either.

    Costed is a synonym for 'valued', 'budgeted for', 'accounted for'.

    Mounts actually started out BOE in vanilla and where changed to BOP when they added armor. You could reduce the cost of your mount in vanilla by having PvP rank 3 and/or honored reputation with your faction. Rank 3 PvP and honored would reduce the cost of your mount by a combined 20%, 10% for each. In vanilla if you got to rank 11 you could also get a 100% PvP mount for very cheap. TBC had 310% mounts, ashes of alar was 310% and well as the gladiator mounts being 310%. There use to be items that you could equip before Wrath that would increase your mounted speed like the "carrot on a stick" trinket or the "riding crop" trinket. There was also enchants that you could get to your boots and gloves that would increase your riding skill. Paladins also got an aura in TBC that increased mount speed.

    • @Lennji
      @Lennji Před 6 lety

      Dr. Florence Thats a bad comparison. You can use ground mounts, but not being able to use flying mounts is a different problem. Let me dumb it down for you. If you had a zone A and you could only use items X but not items Y, people with items Y will get upset because they could use them before. Plus you could say blizzard encourages you to buy / support them with buying a flying mount from their in-game shop. So when you buy an item you expect it to be fully functional, use all of its features, not half of them.

    • @florencep2209
      @florencep2209 Před 6 lety +2

      Top
      That‘s incorrect, it‘s a valid comparison, since enabling flying mounts basically means no one is going to use their ground mounts. You know that‘s true, don‘t come at me with „b-b-but the COULD still use them“. They‘d no longer be the fastest traveling option, and that‘s what matters.
      Secondly, if a flying mount is not allowed in certain areas, it is not „less functional“ all of a sudden. You can‘t mount inside, does that make all of your mounts less functional? Of course not.
      Flying mounts make things a lot faster, but they ruin the exploration experience and world interaction. Flying should not be allowed in zones that were not designed with flying in mind, at least not while they‘re currently relevant.

    The main parts of Pathfinder that are bullshit are the rep requirements. Remove those and remove Suramar from Legion Loremaster (or get rid of all the rep-gating so you can finish the storyline without being knee-capped by Rep gates).
    And it'd be fine.
    Rep has no business being involved with flying. Between Loremaster and Explorer you saw literally EVERYTHING in the zone. That's all Blizzard said they wanted, so that's all that should be required.
    (and no sneaky bullshit like needing to be exalted with a faction to finish their storyline which can only be done by grinding World Quests for a few weeks because each rep level only gives you a couple quests to do and most of the world quests are locked until you complete other parts of the story).
    Draenors was complete bullshit though. They actually scrapped several daily quests that were supposed to make the rep requirements a tad bit more palatable and just said fuck it, let'em grind mobs for it and run ONE daily quest per day for a Month or two. CHA'CHING.

      I started playing just before TBC came out and stopped playing in the middle of WOTLK. Bought a month subscription two weeks ago to try the game again.
      Game has competely changed. Nobody talks to each other, instances are not fun anymore at low level because you get spawned in the instance and everybody keeps quiet. It only takes about 5 min to clear an instance as well. You don't need tactics anymore.
      I always loved that pets had special abilities so each pet was different. It was also kinda cool to feed your pet.
      The talent tree is completely gone. You just get abilities and every 15 levels or so you can choose a talent that doesn't affect gameplay all that much.
      And I don't know what else. It is just a totally different game from when I played compared to now.

    I didn't get my first mount until I was 47, but I was a druid so I have travel form so it wasn't so bad.
    Not sure how long I spent at 60 with a 60% mount, however.
    Then TBC it took weeks for me to save up 5000g for my first epic flying, only a few hundred gold a day if I actually grinded anything. Had one miner guildmate who would make 600g a day just selling gems and im like whoa what.
