They do kinda look like scale now that I look at it! It's actually just the nodes along the stems. Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with scale on this plant 🤞

Hm, did the cuttings have a node? Sometimes when it's just a leaf it can die off. Also using dull scissors to make the cut can sometimes damage the end and keep the cutting from up-taking water easily.
