I feel like I inspired this a bit x3
We had always had, Mac desktops in our house growing up, passed down from my uncle, System7 though to Mac OS 9. However, that was my first laptop, the iBook g4 that was fully mine, that I brought for college with, my educational discount on the educational store. Then I owned, the 2007 MacBook Pro, (that broke after 2 years the logic board went.) Then I had the 2009 MBP, then the 2014 MBP, and I now own the 16 inch 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro. When I was at college, with my iBook G4, times were a lot simpler.
this is really handy, nice work!
love this channel so far
Thankss!!~ ^-^
dude wtf why are your videos so underrated?
Also: You can press Control-Z to access Open Firmware pretty much anywhere in the Preboot Environment, such as the Startup Manager (Option menu) and the screen with the blinking question mark.
omgg thats super useful! Thank you so much for the tip, glad you liked the video btw!
@@WindowsG Thanks! I know a lot more about open firmware, if you want any tips on Open Firmware, USB booting, or alternative PowerPC OSes (e.g. modern debian) let me know (discord)
Can you boot the MacOS9Lives installer from USB? I’m guessing no because the USB drives are writable, and Mac OS 9 really doesn’t like that
@@emmyheart2082 It seems possible with normal OS 9, you should look it up
This is hilarious, 🎉🎉🎉 great video
Love this channel
Any additional revelations on unsupported features? Brightness/sleep/3D ? I just ordered this machine on eBay and eagerly awaiting taking on this project. I have a 128gb mSata sitting around so I’m going to attempt replacing the HD with mSata to IDE adapter.
I read on Macintosh garden somewhere that the brightness controls might be available but inverted?
Really dig your channel!
No se si viene al caso pero hace aproximadamente 2 años, instale O.S 9.2 en un MacMini G4 y es lo mejor que he podido hacer.
Wow, this is super cool! I may have to do this on my iBook to run Pro Tools Free again. I miss that program, hehe.
That is really useful to use Legacy software
many thanks for sharing this!; out of curiosity; would t be possible to boot this OS installer from the USB instead of the cd room drive? like burn the cd contents to the usb
reminds me of the hell of getting w10 64 bit to actually run on a mac 1.1 which was 100% doable but the only way to do it was burning a special w10 server disk since no USB boot and it doesn't like standard windows 10 disks
Oh god I've done that before, I found what worked for me was to actually install it first onto a separate hdd in a different computer than swap it into the mac pro.. i still do that with linux installs and stuff on those 32bit EFI macs
Thanks I’ll give it a shot on my white dwarf
I'm not sure if it is because my iBook is the G4 800... but have you tried the process without messing with NVRAM? I installed from another computer using FireWire Target Mode, then it happily booted from the boot selector screen (option at boot). I installed the 9200 drivers, and at that point, I'd never loaded up open firmware and opengl worked.
Another tip, you can wipe the boot settings by pressing Cmd-Opt-P-R while starting up, instead of loading OF and clearing nvram.
I'll write up what I did, perhaps I'll modify the boot CD to include the Radeon 9200 drivers.
Awesome video! Although one thing that stuck out to me was I have the exact iBook G4 that you have, although I didn’t have to do any of the steps you used in the video. I only burned the Unsupported OS 9 ISO from that Macintosh Garden listing to a CD and typed a few commands into open firmware. After that, it worked flawlessly.
Weirdd, I knew about the Macintosh Garden boot disc but I couldn't get it to burn so I didn't look into it.. what did you burn it in? (as in like, software). Glad you liked the video ^-^
@@WindowsG Of course! And I just used the disc burning software built-in macOS Big Sur on my Mid-2014 MacBook Pro. I did use an Apple USB DVD drive so I don’t know if that made things any different but it did work perfectly with no issues!
In case I don't have a battery and the pram battery is also dead I would def need the custom ROM right?
4:16 interesting disk names....
EPIC VID - can this work on a Titanium G4 ?
Actually you're in luck! All TiBooks are OS9 supported out of the factory so you wont need to do any of this. Just burn and install a regular OS9 CD
@@WindowsG
I tried many times but I could not get the MacOS 9 disk to load, and I have for a little background made it my hobbie restoring Titanium PowerBook over the last few years so I have some experience installing MacOSX but no experience installing MacOS 9
Can you make a video of the process of a single install on MacOS9 and a in the same vide a dual boot setup…
I have burnt my iso Macos9.2.2 install disks as well as original Mac OS 9 disks labeled for Titanium PB’s that came originally with the Tibooks - I though they only worked in dual boot sets ups- I want a dedicated MacOS9 machine in one of my 1gzh ti books
Thanks in advance for your time ! Ps I think your videos are funny as hell !
@@Edward3DFX Not sure if you ever got help but one option, if you have a spare firewire device you don't mind formatting, is to use that device's HDD as a bootable network drive, make a partition and write the disk image to it, i've got an iBook that works as a installation media library now.
❤
Guessing this will also work with PowerBook G4 aluminum
Hello...just found this video awesome. My question: can I do that in a Powerbook G4 12" 2005? Or do you know any video that shows how in that machine. Thanks a lot
you got like a discord server or something? this entire video has been so based
It looks cool, yet my ibook won't turn to open firmware! always coming back to 10.4 yet I tried all the keys I know from where I was using OS9. I could make a partition with 10.4 and 10.5 but I assumed it was because I changed to a recent SSD. I installed OS9.2 on a target mode with my clamshell and OS9 DVD. Yet the computer still can't see start up Disk for OS9 and when using classic it boot until the end then close. I found same tutorial on a written site. But can't get it to boot to firmware, it works with extensions off or bootting from 10.5 to 10.4 before i erased 10.5 to get OS9... I have older macs with OS9 but this one with a bigger SSD I wanted to install old software.. anyway thank you
I did this years ago but I couldn't get external video working so it sits on the shelf.
Oh I watched about 1 minute of the video and thats probably why.
Welp at least I’m not the only person who randomly names flash drives and floppies owo and uwu
Who is Snoopie? :D
My iBook G4 still can work except poorly battery life, running os9 in classic mode
Can I use the original 9.2.2 disc?
No
1:11 Which Cat Video is that? It's so cute?
Yep it is! here's a link, thanks for commenting!~ czcams.com/video/GIn2DyEp4eg/video.html
OS9 Boot Enabler Scrip is now none existent , this setup is not for all imac g4 or ibook g4. if you have ati 9500 you are screwed. need older ibook g4 with ati 9200 specifically
👀
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
CMD./Option/Alt.O/F ?
That is 5 keys!!!!
On windows keyboards the Alt key is also the Option key.
Besides be hella cool, why would you want to do this?
geometry dash musicxxxxx
That's how I'm gonna call all my USB drives from now on and I will add a furry pixel art as drive icon OwO
just install morphos smh
yea if you want to reboot every 30 minutes or pay $80
