Just a man and his guitar, doing what he does best. Enjoy this performance of clarity Tab: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/joh... Video Tutorial: Check out the video response by jwdubs
This is the John Mayer im a fan of and wish i could see again :/ too bad i was so young at the time this album came out or else i would of gone to see him in concert.
the phone ringing at the end is great...it adds realistic touch to the environment...John is just a normal man playing his guitar like all of us do in our rooms, and but he adds his extraordinary lyrics...
For reasons I cannot explain, I simply love how the phone started ringing while he was playing. Although it irrationally makes me wish that I could call him, too. LOL.
Lips lips lips ........ wow ..... his music is love its life its serenity ..... hes wonderful and smart and sexy and charming and brilliant and a genius and so many profound ways its incredible ... john is love ... theres no describing love theres no describing John... I love th whole thing with the phone ringing at the end just made the moment so much better ... feels like ur sitting there right next to him.
Everyone says he's a normal guy, but i'm naming a syndrome after him. John Mayer syndrome. It's when you are so lonely and socially inept that you lock yourself in a room and play guitar on end for years. he just ended up getting really good and becoming famous.
it all depends. If you feel comfortable between index and middle finger, then use that. I always put it between my middle and ring finger. takes practice.
@jwdubs You should make a video! No I don't get what you said, I play it using my first, middle and ring finger already. So I don't get what adjustments you are trying to explain. I play it with middle on low E, first on the A, and Third string on the D.
@ams914 Actually, the chords are just the same, he only changes the place of the chords on the scale. On the chorus, instead of playing the G on the 3rd fret (6th string) ele does it on 10th fret 5th string and this way with all others.
*shakes his head* His dad rented the guitar for him and his brothers, and he started playing because of michael j fox playing johnny b goode in back to the future.
Same for sony put out a 4 track before this with 'my stupid mouth' like 99 ish? Sam goody was giving it away. When I saw him do this on mtv2 it was live back then. You had to stay up and catch certain artists. I couldn't fucking believe it when I heard John Mayer play this. I still cant..
HAHAHA "hello?!" so random. i love this guy(: i hope to play like him one day! although i dont think i could ever get that amazing! but on the bright side..i finally got "stop this train" down(:
yeah the intro is a bit different, basically same 2 chords, different picking pattern. The chorus you see here is the way he originally play "clarity" years ago. Now he does a double hammer-on chord follow by a bar chord.
at 0:38 doesn't seems like he messed up. Yeah sure, he did draw the pick out but the guitar chord is not the one he use for the chorus. The chord for the chorus look completely different at 1:11. So we know for sure there's no problem with the audio. May be the editor messed up with the video clips?
1st of all john mayer DOSENT mess up 2nd hes professional and hes done this for a while so the odds of him messing up are VERY slim. 3rd he can play anything he wants and it still sounds good even if he "messed up" or not 4th what might seem like a mess up to you may be an artist trying something new instead of playing the same thing
Actually at 39 seconds...you can see that he is finger picking and he has his pcik in between his pinkie and ring finger (where he holds it until he needs it) the he shuffles it up to move into the chorus...then it cuts away....while still in the verse.. even though he was moving into the chorus....so it was edited
yea it is. i have a shitty yamaha acoustic that feels like pressing on barbed wire when i try and play this wonderful. i really need a guitar like his and that kind of action
That's what I'm saying, the guy who posted this also linked the tab in the description of the arpeggiated verse, but it doesn't sound the same as the video from what I've played
Takes me back to the early 2000's gotta love the nostalgia vibes
This is the John Mayer im a fan of and wish i could see again :/ too bad i was so young at the time this album came out or else i would of gone to see him in concert.
Jack Venar facts. I was like the only one out of my friends listening to him back then. They didn’t understand me @ at the time. But I didn’t care.
the phone ringing at the end is great...it adds realistic touch to the environment...John is just a normal man playing his guitar like all of us do in our rooms, and but he adds his extraordinary lyrics...
I love this version, its just like all of us 'average joes' jamming in our room.
Everyone wishes average could be that good
you are average like that????
?
His guitar technique. INCREDIBLE
For reasons I cannot explain, I simply love how the phone started ringing while he was playing. Although it irrationally makes me wish that I could call him, too. LOL.
I wish I could find this version as a tab... it's interesting the way he plays the chords here.
Turns around an answers the phone like he didn't just do anything special.
whoever first handed john mayer a guitar deserves the worlds best hug
His grandma
Mayer is a master guitar player. Not really surprising that he's a one-take guy. LOL the phone at the end is priceless.
this dude brings me a whole lot of joy..
one man one guitar, just singing for himself and no worries in mind. That's a quite peaceful moment right there.
Just your casual sunday morning impro jam on your acoustic being Mayer....
God I wish I played like him
This is the best live thing i've seen from him alone like this even though the phone rang
John Mayer is the best.
Holy Crap! Was this recorded as a single shot?... Sounds like it! My respect for this Dude's musicianship is profound!
August 25th in Saratoga, NY....i'm SO there and i cant wait!
Yay! It gives me chills... rarely wonderful!
@elambing It really isn't as hard as it sounds. The beauty of acoustic is even open strings sound amazing !

What is the picking pattern he is using for this version? its way better...
i love this song
I remember seeing this 15 year ago
I love how nonchalant he is.. and how perfectly he ended the song before picking up the phone.
Masterpiece
amazing! someone needs to tab this asap

this was the time in what mayer appears in mtv , now is a wonderfull time!
Lovely! Thanks for posting
I've been looking for this video for like years -_-

@lilbrazilcutie theres a link to a tablature in the video description, and jwdubs' video response shows how to play it very well
awesome!

Saw this 2000?On mtv2. I knew John would be great
in fact this version is so much better because of the whole ouuuouuu...
AGREED!
cool version of the song, also thats a sick shirt
Everyone says he's a normal guy, but i'm naming a syndrome after him. John Mayer syndrome. It's when you are so lonely and socially inept that you lock yourself in a room and play guitar on end for years. he just ended up getting really good and becoming famous.
@elambing yeah thats it for the verse. i haven't bothered for the chorus or bridge
@elambing for the verses yes. chorus and bridge may be different, but i havent looked into it, the verse is the easiest part. try it.
like this version
it all depends. If you feel comfortable between index and middle finger, then use that. I always put it between my middle and ring finger. takes practice.
Peep the pick coming out at :39
brilliant.
Good eye!
@ams914 Play around with hammer-ons.
There's tabs with the pre-chorus stuff. This is the most beautiful performance of Clarity I've heard.
@o0oxMuSicxo0o great, ill put the link in the video description!
John is playing a Martin OM-42. I don't think his signature OM-28JM was produced yet.
it must be fun to be able to play like that XD
@jwdubs You should make a video! No I don't get what you said, I play it using my first, middle and ring finger already. So I don't get what adjustments you are trying to explain. I play it with middle on low E, first on the A, and Third string on the D.
nice
ahah hes got commitment to a song. if the phone rings while im trying to play i drop everything to answer.
@ams914 Actually, the chords are just the same, he only changes the place of the chords on the scale. On the chorus, instead of playing the G on the 3rd fret (6th string) ele does it on 10th fret 5th string and this way with all others.
I WANT THAT SHIRT
@elambing im workin on it
@lefte18 i think it might be his OM-28
gotta love the way the phone ringing was somewhat in sync with the song hahaha in terms of timing and tone..
how adorable.
"hello?" (:
I miss those days.....sad
to lower action on an acoustic, do u turn clockwise or counter-clockwise?
*shakes his head* His dad rented the guitar for him and his brothers, and he started playing because of michael j fox playing johnny b goode in back to the future.
Same for sony put out a 4 track before this with 'my stupid mouth' like 99 ish? Sam goody was giving it away. When I saw him do this on mtv2 it was live back then. You had to stay up and catch certain artists. I couldn't fucking believe it when I heard John Mayer play this. I still cant..
does anyone know what tabs he's playing at 1:00 for the oooos?
dang yea it took me forever to figure out what you guys were talking about...whoever noticed that at first is very observant...lol
he didn't mess up... he meant to say that. he always changed the words during live performances.
what notes is he hammering on, ughhh im trying to figure out how to play this song, its so difficult!!!
HAHAHA "hello?!"
so random.
i love this guy(: i hope to play like him one day!
although i dont think i could ever get that amazing! but on the bright side..i finally got "stop this train" down(:
I hope you're still enjoying you're guitar journey all these years later!
Martin OMJM. His model.
@elambing its not hard. its just a variation of the same chord.
@ams914 I have tabs if you want them..
those fingers..... crazy.
yeah the intro is a bit different, basically same 2 chords, different picking pattern. The chorus you see here is the way he originally play "clarity" years ago. Now he does a double hammer-on chord follow by a bar chord.
This is why I love John! He's a true original.. just wish he could make normal faces!
I bet everybody was like "somebody get this fucking phone"
Precursor to continuum?
i want to learn how to play this :(
at 0:38 doesn't seems like he messed up. Yeah sure, he did draw the pick out but the guitar chord is not the one he use for the chorus. The chord for the chorus look completely different at 1:11.
So we know for sure there's no problem with the audio. May be the editor messed up with the video clips?
@JMBelief1 Yeah I would love them... just pm me. Thanks. Always nice to see it on paper if its available.
@vintagesound29 Your guess is right haha
how u figure?
this looks like the om-28..he now plays with a model called the omjm
1st of all john mayer DOSENT mess up
2nd hes professional and hes done this for a while so the odds of him messing up are VERY slim.
3rd he can play anything he wants and it still sounds good even if he "messed up" or not
4th what might seem like a mess up to you may be an artist trying something new instead of playing the same thing
what kind of Martin is this?

yea it is. i have a shitty yamaha acoustic that feels like pressing on barbed wire when i try and play this wonderful. i really need a guitar like his and that kind of action
sooo lucky!! i was supposed to go =[
but no ride [sleeptrain]
& a beautiful performance ending with a phone call😅
What kind of guitar is Mayer playing?
Between his index and middle fingers...=)
just practice switching constantly..you'll get the hang of it
omg! im inlove with that guy, who's with me?
Nice video. I can almost taste what it feels like to be a voyeur.
jennypennypocket hahaha nice one señorita lol
lol @ the phone ringing
You just need to pick each string instead of plucking the whole chord, I could put up a vid if you guys would like.
I don't think the tab sounds very much like how he plays it here (the part in the beginning). Can someone update the tab or something?
He doesn't give a tutorial on this version of the song.
the beginning is arppegiated in this version, which Zartimus does not explain.
That's what I'm saying, the guy who posted this also linked the tab in the description of the arpeggiated verse, but it doesn't sound the same as the video from what I've played
two guitars? O.o
