I think they are retconned as mutated Namekians?
He's technically a demon even if Kami is a namekian.. why you may ask? Because Piccolo was the embodiment and the incarnation of evil itself of Kami, that's makes him pretty much a demon.
People have to remember or learn that OG DB is more mythical lore instead of science fiction lore. It's much closer to Sun Wukong in Journey to the West. DBZ may have shifted towards alien warrior but that doesn't really change the roots of the franchise.
The Sun Wukong lore is more interesting to me anyway. Once it shifted to alien warrior narrative it became the All Saiyan All the Time Bonanza with an assembly line of transformations and flashy energy attacks being spammed out instead of martial arts prowess.
They're still demons today
Tbf, even in current dragon ball, I think it’s a mistake to think of deities as being different species than regular folks. Like the gods of destruction were just mortals that trained into being deities and gained deity powers like hakai. This is this same thing, just on a smaller scale (and u see towards the end of dragon ball that “god of earth” is a job that anyone really could have). So there’s nothing wrong with being both a Namekian and earth’s Demon King

Launch really is a great character, it's crazy that she's barely in DBZ and even crazier that he wasn't brought back for Super (since they brought back a lot of folks for that).

Piccolo's minions are basically just another type of Namekian. There's the Dragon clan, Warrior clan, and Demon clan.
Ehh I don’t think so… at this point they’re just demons and Piccolo essentially gets retconned come Z or rather _what_ (species) Piccolo & Kami are basically gets retconned. Where it now seems that whole aspect of their species got erased once they became aliens/Namekians opposed to being “demons”. So until we see a canon story where Namekians are shown to have this same ability we see King Piccolo do here in OB DragonBall, then as far as I’m concerned it’s not something they can do.
Namekians and saiyans aren't a thing, not until DBZ. At this point in time Piccolo is the Demon King (much like later - Dabura).
Actually Toriyama once said he first thought of Namekians and Saiyans in the following tournament arc.
Now you know what Krillin meant in DBZA when he said something along the lines of "He basically Tambourined me" or "He almost Tambourined me"... something to the effect. It was a notable line that I didn't point out at the time because you hadn't seen Dragon Ball yet.
I love Lunch, especially Blond Lunch and I still do't understand why Toriama toss her away like that.

She didn't really have a role anymore like most of side characters that got phased out. Her being comedic violent person doesn't exactly work if Vegeta or Piccolo will just knock her to the moon.
At this point King Piccolo and his minions are portrayed as demons. In DBZa Piccolo often laments not being a demon anymore.
Namekians weren't really a thing yet. That said, Piccolo is still a demon because he was the concentrated evil of the originial namekian, while kami was the concentrated good. Kami wasn't born a god but became one, same with piccolo.
There’s a line from a DBZA episode where Krillin says, “he basically Tambourine’d me” Now you get the reference!
Piccolo's minions are retconned later as "mutated Namekians." So they are Namekians but weird, monsterish ones.
I liked them more as Demons.
@@Sunaki1000 I think the demon narrative is better as well. The franchise, in general, is more appealing to me when it was more rooted in Sun Wukong in Journey to the West than when the story changed to alien warrior science fiction.
The Reason Piccolo's minions aren't namekians is because King Piccolo isn't technically a namekian. Since he is the embodiment of evil cast out from Kami, he counts as a demon in the dragon ball world. Because he came from a namekian he has the same traits and abilities but because he is a demon they are a dark and twisted version. This is why his children aren't namekians they are demons birthed in the same way namekians are.
Now the Piccolo saga!! Hell Yeah!!
Launch is not in DBZ just because Toriyama forget about her.
Piccolo is a member of the demon Clan, Dragon Ball Z doesn't change this. Aliens can be demons in Dragon Ball. Piccolo is literally God's evil manifested.
Few things were thought of ahead of time. Dragon Ball was a long improv game of Toriyama playing "and then this happened".
It does a great job of connecting the beginning, middle and end of a story together when you start at the beginning, but if you start in the middle and then go back to the beginning you start to ask questions he didn't think of while making the story.
Pilaf gang has caused so much trouble, it's good they finally started henching for the Z fighters.
We should've known Pilaf and his boys were behind this. Who else would be so STUPID as to let Piccolo out of the jar?
King Piccolo truly is one of the all time best villains in anime. He lives to his title of Demon King.
AniMelon, I agree with you. Launch is one of the cooler characters in the Dragon Ball universe. She's a courageous tough lady with a heart of gold, and her strange alter ego combo makes her character just that more interesting. If they made a show featuring Launch as the main character, I most likely would watch it.
The Lore Drops in the episode are amazing.
I would argue that it wasn’t that he liked the evil way as much as he probably saw that being good didn’t matter and all that mattered was absolute power. That power and want for it probably corrupted him further
when i learned about her after my first time watching DB i was so angry she was basically erased from the series like she never existed and is still to this day treated as such they brought back alot of characters in super from dragonball but just keep ignoring her. hell they even brought some random trash crane student before they even tried to bring launch back its annoys me
King Piccolo's is the personification of Kami’s inner dark side, or evilness he expelled from his soul in order to ascend as Kami-sama, the God Guardian of Earth. That's why King Piccolo can give birth demons as his minions.
Tamborine and King Piccolo's other sons are mutant Namekians
The weird thing is, Piccolo needed Pilaf to learn about the Dragonballs.

It's cause Kami created the Dragon Balls after they split; Kami mentions in DBZ that creating the Dragon Balls was something that he just kinda did some day, like it just came to him like second nature, no conscious memories

Namekians and saiyans were not a thing until the saiyan saga was starting 😂 Toriyama initially based this off of “journey to the west” so Dragon Ball was more fantasy influenced!
When “Z” was starting he decided to pivot to science-fi and retconned gokus origin
I think he had some vague idea of it in the 23rd Tournament as he had Piccolo and Kami talk in a strange language. A decent setup for the next arc.

Also, Roshi's wig for Jackie Chun, was like Master Mutaito's 😂

I guess they said Devil instead of demon because they thought devil sounded cooler, and they never thought while writing these for television on Toonami that someday years from a 'streaming service' would include a translation note showing the whole world that they're using the wrong word.

3:39 the distinction between devil and demon doesn’t really exist Japanese with 魔 or ma/mazoku referring to any malevolent spirit so devil and demon are both defensible translations piccolo himself is referred to as 大魔王 or diamao meaning great demon king which is more in line with the western concept of a devil

Krillin got kill with one kick, goku did not have a chance against Tambourine and namekians are uncharted in terms of their clan and abilities, king piccolo is the second namek to give birth to creatures with the first one is guru who is the eldest namek who gave birth to all nameks, when their home was in danger of climate change, kami was one of the few nameks who got sent to another world as kami was the nameless namek who got sent to earth with nobody to come get him and wait for there until he got taller ans left, he end up on the lookout and remain there until he split into two beings one became kami who took the position as guardian of earth after the previous one deem him worthy of the title and some point later on he created the power of the dragon balls using his magic while the being became the demon king piccolo who had a mean streak and appetite for genocide due to the exposure of conflict and evilness becoming intoxicated by it. king piccolo is a poko priest a namek clan who can give birth to minions to create misery and create total chaos since King piccolo is evil and they're based off of reptiles, hideous monsters, demons dragons etc.

Because that's the Kanji symbol for Devil. It's Piccolo Daimao's mark which goes alongside the Kanji that Kami uses, which is God. The "direct translation" of the English script is a bit "generalized". What that mark "specifically" is is "half" of the Kanji for Akuma (悪魔), which is "devil" (that half of the 悪魔 Kanji (魔) specifically being pronounced as "Ma"). Oni (鬼) would be a more proper translation for just specifically "a demon", which has a different Kanji than the one for Akuma.
The "members" of Piccolo's forces themselves are the Mazoku Clan (which translates to Demon Clan 魔族 (which if I remember has a joke later on with some kids trying to write the name of the clan but end up misspelling it which is a joke you'll only understand if you know Kanji)).
"They're not Namekians".
They're his children. Namekians and Piccolo being an alien weren't a thing at this point. They were just demons in this saga and partly the one afterwards. The alien stuff only gets thought up shortly before Z starts (though the American dub makes it really irritating to listen to to me in the saga after this since they start talking about aliens a few times in the English version when that's something nobody should even know about yet).
If you want a "canonical" explanation for why Piccolo's Children look like that it's due to him only being half of a Namekian or his pure evil demon influence warping his offspring. In Dragon Ball Online (which takes place like a hundred years after the series is over), Namekians that start having Offspring near where Piccolo Daimao's "breeding grounds" used to be have their offspring turn out like the demons shown here due to Piccolo's influence still infesting the area and in turn influencing those that have settled there.
For Goku, him being an alien (as well as aliens in general) weren't really thought of as part of the story until partway through the saga after this one. Him being an alien was tossed around as an idea by Oolong during the first saga but that was obviously just random ideas being thrown around instead of it actually being decided on as an origin back then.
Goku cried 3 times in the entire Dragon Ball Series and Krillin dying The First time was the 2nd time he cried

Lots to unpack in this episode. The alien aspects I think weren't on Toriyama's mind until the next arc, and even then those weren't revealed until the Saiyan arc. As far as this point in the story goes, Piccolo and his minions are demons, nothing more, nothing less. Goku is at a big disadvantage against Tambourine right now; not only did he kill one of the Top 5 strongest fighters at this point, but as Roshi said, Goku's still tired from his fight with Tenshinhan, which happened at most a couple hours ago, and he even refused to eat anything waiting for Krillin.
They kinda were. I mean right after Goku turned into a Great Ape for the first time Oolong said he's probably an alien.
@@xyenia0122 That was just a one-off joke about how durable Goku is, and knowing Toriyama I doubt he had that one line in mind when thinking "hey, wouldn't it be surprising if Goku and Piccolo were actually aliens?"

Launch deserved to be in DBZ. MasakoX was a visionary to pair her with Raditz in his what if.
Also, I learned recently that Mutaito was voiced by Phil Parsons, the same voice actor of Nappa and I can’t unhear it now. Funnily enough that Nappa is the one that told Piccolo that he was a Namekian.

The kanji 魔 on it's own has *many* different meanings; the dub goes for "devil" while the accompanying subs go for "demon"

We could say that king piccolo is an actual demon being the evil half of God and all, his son Ma Jr.(demon Jr.) "our piccolo" was born both as an extension of king piccolo's life and an actual namekian not a demon, funny how everytime Toriyama says "f*ck it, they are this now" we could naturally add it to the lore as if it was always part of it
I swear rewatching you all these episodes is great and so much more with someone who loves it and watching it for the first time😊

All that alien garbage did exist until Z. Toriyama intended to end dragonball after the next tournament when Goku fights Jr(piccolo). He was pressured by Shounen Jump to continue. Then he jumped several sharks with all that alien bs and the fights becoming boring laser shows.

The concept of launch and her introduction is a little bit weird but I really like her too. It is so sad that she only appears in filler scenes during Z and doesnt appear in super at all. She is not really relevant to the story as she cant really fight or support the Z warriors in any other way but toriyama could have maybe written more about her being interested in tien

Not to be a dub hater, but damn... this really killed/downplayed the impact of the things happening in this episode. Goku's rage and desperation was totally lost in translation. If there is any episode you guys should give a rewatch in japanese/an alternative dub then this is the one.

Why did he go super sayian when killin died
Out of universe it just was'nt a thing yet, but in universe my thought is that Goku did'nt really know how to control his rage and anger. Here he rushes to Tambrouine blindly completely consumed by grief, however when Frieza kills Krillian you can see him struggling to not make the same mistake. Instead trying to get a hold of it and push for what he needed to get the job done.
