- Hear N’ Aid was recorded on May 20 and 21, 1985, 40 artists from the hard rock music community gathered at A&M Records Studios to participate in the making of a record called "Stars", as part of a the album, Hear 'N Aid. The money raised would be for famine relief efforts in Africa and around the world. Brad Gillis is criminally under rated. I've seen him live, his CONTROL is legendary, there really is no one like him and I feel like he gets over looked because Night Ranger, while all great artists and musicians, wrote a bunch of top 40 stuff and fluff hits and their harder stuff was Bon Jovi lite. I'm not dissing, it's just how I see it.
Just finished watching " Dio: Dreamers Never Die" documentary. Soooo good❤️
I remember being in my car delivering Chinese food and hearing this for the first time on the radio.
I had heard about this and the people involved and when the solos came around I couldn’t figure out who was who,
Except for one guy. “That’s Yngwie”, I said.
And I could definitely tell Brad Gillis whammy technique
I knew Yngwie and Vivian.
I remember the first time I heard Yinwies name on a radio promo...we were like, "Who the Hell is this guy? What an odd name, was he some new crazy Israeli guitar 🎸 God or something? " then we hard him and were blown away. Saw Vivian w Dio at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. New years eve show
Lynch and Yngwie were recognizable almost immediately!!
I was able to pick out George, Brad, and Yngwie.
So many Rock Gods in a single song. Incredible! 🤘
And Ted Nugent
Rock God's...... Hhhmmm.
Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford and Geoff Tate.Who else?
🤘🤘
Shout to every single guitarist on the track, because they all kicked absolute ass ( the most unsung heroes here were Neil Schon, Buck Dharna and Eddie Ojeda who completely rocked) But a special shout out to Dave Murray and Adrian Smith for providing the harmonized guitars that absolutely tied this all together beautifully and melodic.
I dont think Dave Murray and Adrian Smith got enough time. Neil Schons solo was very well composed definitely an unsung hero. Awesome to see all these dudes jamming with each other.
I remember watching this as it premiered on mTV...incredibly fun memories. I'm so glad I grew up during the 80's with this music. All of the musicians on this are huge influences...will never forget them.
Dio. Halford. Tate. Singing on one song. With a guitar solo that goes on for days. Rock n Roll…
Rest in peace Ronnie and Kevin, stars indeed.
Frankie as well
Dave Meniketti, was a huge double threat, stunning voice & guitarist, should have given him a quick guitar solo.
I would have liked to have heard Glenn Tipton, Michael Schenker, and Matthias Jabs take a turn in the solos.
this song inspires me to live and fight daily, that riff makes me tears feeding my spirit.
I hear ya brother...it reminds me of how this music has traveled though and delivered me thru life!
What ?
@@mojopin70 its an inspiration song, passionate one
I am so fortunate to have gotten to know Ronnie personally. W O W!!
Rob H was all in in the chorus
I presume that's him hitting those ungodly high notes. Incredible stuff.
It was either him or Geoff Tate.
@@Rikrik1138 All you can recognise easily during the chorus are Rob and Geoff's high pitched voices. Still unbelievable today !! Same with the guitar players ( It takes you 1 second to spot Yngwie ! ).
They made a small mistake of putting him close to the mic + naturally strong voice + always goes all in. Had to tune him down in the mix and was still the loudest. If you have a good studio headphones, even though this is an old record you can really only hear Rob's scream and Tate's "muddy" voice color. And at the end only Rob then only Tate (I guess they mixed it like that with intention). What a machines.
If you listen closely Rob's voice is easily the most defined/clearest in the chorus
You will never get this much talent from 70s and 80s rock music in one room like this for such a good cause ever again ! Ronnie James Dio ! What a rock icon ! To lead this project ! Rip Ronnie! Thank you for all yr music you gave us ! Shalom
Exactly…well said!
so right 😃👍
Absolutely. Singers, guitarists, musicians... Incredible.
@@chrislebon5927 Man, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when watching the video and the making of footage. Felt so genuine….they were all there to do something for charity. Rob Halford at the console with Dio….Geoff Tate laying down vocals….all the smiles. Dang…what a time that was.
Talent?🤣😂🤣🤡
I remember the first time I saw this for the first time. It introduced me to soooo many artists/bands. Back then, around 06/07 I was just getting into rocknroll/heavy metal/glam metal. But when I heard this, man, the vocals and riffs just floored me.
Paul Shortino(Rough Cutt), Geoff Tate(Queensryche), Meniketti(Y & T) were absolutely insane 🤘🤘
I remember when I forgot to hear it for the first time for the second time.
Seeing Ritchie Blackmore there would have been a great addition. The sad part of this is this music gets so little support now days in the RAP and Pop world, but still many great bands out there.
Bought this back in the day. Great to learn how they did it. So much shredding in this video!!!
Yep. We used to sing "We're Starved!"
Really wish ratt took part in this would have looked to hear Warren and Robbins contributions to solo
Dave n Adrian are the MVP's. So So in the pocket.
Can't believe they didn't have Meniketti taking a solo or three. Dave burned with the best of them, and his vibrato was the best in the business
amen ,, so glad i met Dave,,a gent and just a vy humble person.....
I also am a big fan of Dave Meniketti.
Let's go ahead and do away with the vocal then give these boys a clean slate! Lol
Dave is so awesome and a great guy.
Metal to my Heart, i love all of them and the whole beautiful Project, but..I mean, Malmsteen´s Solo´s just blew me away, as always..i like the look of the guy behind him, left side..he witnessed something one-of-a-kind! Heavy Rock & Metal til Enternity! Love DIO, R.i.P.!!!
The Coke budget for this recording session could have feed a continent for 10 years!
lol I think Carlos is asking Yngwie if he wants to do a line 00:55
Yes, indeed 😂!
Ha ha..cases of Jack Daniels too, I'm sure.
By Coke you mean Coca-Cola, I'm sure...
@@rodrigofonseca6241 of course.....they were very thirsty boys !
Buck Dharma and Rob Halford seem to have outlasted all the rest in so many ways.
No matter how famous -nobody gets out of here alive
Rest In Peace
Captured a great moment in Metal History...Even Michael Mc Clean (Lenny from Laverne & Shirley fame) from Spinal Tap was in on it!
Michael McKean
Wow that's what he did before. I knew the face but could not place it. Damn.
@@Gimmea59Paul Harry Shearer from the Simpsons is next to him
Still can’t believe Chuck McGill of Better Call Saul is in this.
Get to know his body of work, it's worth it
Which one is he ?
@@robbiebarry777 24:03
Looks more like Lenny from Laverne and Shirley.
@@chrisb2535 I’ll have to take a closer look….naaah it can’t be. Hair is too long.
The Solo with THE MOST feeling is played, IMHO at 28:22, and everybody just talks about how fast he plays.
actually it's Schons outro solo but yes Yngwie plays nicely in that section. aways thought so.
At 28:23 it's actually Yngwie.
Of course, this guitar corps. is insane. But, has there ever been such a talented collection of vocalists in one place? Dio, Halford, Tate...maybe the three best to ever do it...and they're just hanging out here.
Insane talent....
Halford , killing it 🔥
And just think of some of the guys from that era who couldn’t make it!
I got rhis record ,i take this in the 80's maybe the 88in the house of my old Friends,⚡🌹✨🍺💫💥,we, are stars then and now , Forever this Is the Power of metal & rock'n'roll, h to erveryone and good year
I miss the 80s so much. Great music, partying, concerts, no computers, what amazing times. No one gave a shit about politics, except for Dee Schnider😝
Agreed. However Dee Snider didn't have much of a choice but he did a GREAT job in front of congress.
Weiss, you're the man. I'm startin' savin' money for your book... meanwhile thank you for these gifts!
The amount of metal/hard Rock talent in that room is just mind blowing!!! \m/
"Long Live To Rock N' Roll" 🤘
arigatou 🇯🇵for giving me such amazing memories STARS⭐️
Rob Halford i love you metal god!!! all legends here!!
Missed those times big time metal was king🤟🏼🤟🏼🥁🇨🇦
From time when people still smiled and had their own opinions.
Simply AMAZING
I have my vinyl of this! Pure Perfection!!
Yngwie malmsteen George Lynch and Rudy made this a fantastic favorite of mine, then and now
czcams.com/video/UHT8V5OIkl4/video.html
Loved this back then..as a older man looking back while it puts a smile on face in retrospect...we were told how much money went to live aide and we are the world...did this sell any to add the charity it was designed for and if so what range?
Singers and songs, will never change it alone, we are calling you, calllliiiiiiing yooooooooooooouhhhh.
Brad Gillis played the best guitar solo
He definitely mastered the whammy trill so that it just makes his solos so recognizable.
For us, it touched you knowing the fact that some of the most incredible talent here, gave their skill set for charity. That and those who gave and no longer with us. Right here it’s documented they gave for their fellow man selflessly. 🎧
@6:58 Neal Schon looking at Yngwie's strat. Awesome.
And to think how many of these talented guys are not with us anymore.....RIP All
I used to own this doc on VHS. Thank you for preserving it here!
wow - 31:55 is just so incredibly sad in hindsight.
dont know how i missed this happening back then. first i heard of it
I would love to hear complete versions with each singer individually from beginning to end!
Graham Bonnet world have been a great add
There was only one interesting thing about this song, Yngwie Malmsteen, when the solos started i said to myself that no matter who is playing, they all sounds the same till Yngwie entered, he was already in 1985 better than all the rest, actually he was the only one that i could recognize instantly, he was and still is on a league of his own, the song itself is a generic Dio song that had an added value because the great vocalists who were singing besides Ronnie James Dio and the lead guitar parts of Yngwie Malmsteen, another good thing about this video are the photos of the artists that reminds me that they and i myself were once young, God bless!!!
Brilliant
Unless I missed it?... where the heck was there mentioning of Vinny Appice!?..... his drumming is instantly recognized in this song, and he's awesome!
This is so great!!
Shame Eddie VH wasn't in on this... ❤
Awesome. What a time this was. Wish there was more footage of this day. I could watch an hour of just laying down vocal tracks. Who sang a few lines, but they weren’t used? Vince? I’m sure having Vince on there would have brought more sales…Motley was huge in 1986(when this was finally released). Would love to see that.
I think anybody who knows would know why Vince didn't get a shot
@@naz7t He pulled out and got replaced by Geoff Tate from Queensryche, which was a far better choice anyway.
@@wordragon You know that as fact? I’m always looking for cool backstory stuff on this. Thanks!
It’s likely that Vince was only there on the day the chorus “gang” vocal was done. This project was done over multiple sessions at different studios. And honestly, with all the great singers, who would wanna hear Vince? His voice is puny compared to the rest.
Axl Rose would have been a great addition, though
Sama ŚMIETANKA NAJLEPSZYCH METALOWYCH CHŁOPAKÓW !!!!!!!! SUPER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song kinda resembles "Burning Heart" by Survivor from Rocky IV. Also 1985. The main riff that is. Same key too.
Inspiration overload.
When Lynch plays, it’s obviously him.
Dio ! Geoff Tate Quiet riot monster voices what a f!!!!!! Lady Gaga eat your heart out!!!
I miss the 80s
EPIC!
All fantastic players, but the one that really surprised me was Neal Schon.
Spinal Tap for the win.
I remember having the 12" and the video that we are watching now!! Fucking classic
George Lynch - living guitar God
Imagine Rudolph Schenker in that reunion.....
PODEROZA CANCION DE METAL ICONICA
DE LEGENDA PARA SIEMPRE INMORTAL
HISTORICA!
The only one missing is Ozzy, but he and Dio were major competitors
U think if they could of put their differences away…cus this was for a cause…❤️🔥🤘❤️🔥
LOS DIOSES DEL ROCK NUNCA MUEREN,
The gods of rock never die.
I have the vinyl record and the VHS tape of the sessions
Yup! This really needs a visual and audio upgrade. Thought there were rumors of that happening. 🤞🏻
In the end, Ronnie had the last laugh because his rejection from participating in these aid events led him to create his own aid tribute and it surpassed the other by so much! Payback is a bitch! 😈 I miss Ronnie so much! None like him.
Yes, Ronnie really was a very unique man and singer, he has also helped other charity projects since then and now there is the Stand up and shout cancer fund in his name.
@@Stefan- Brilliant!
Iron Maiden on the twin guitar melodies. Up the Irons!
Yngwie is lightyears ahead of the others..
For widdly stuff yeah, ( I loved Yngwie back in the day ) It was a great guitar record.
Duke Fame was there too!
Chris Holmes & Uncle Ted LOL
Hell yeah!!!
Hey, wait....Samurai's Mom? Well of course I'd agree with someone with that handle! 🥷
i can pin point when buck solos. very unique for this line up.Also: dio took a chance on a relatively unknown in Paul Shortino and boy did he deliver! Congrats on a powerful delivery Paul Shortino!!!
His wife managed Rough Cutt, so I'm pretty sure Dio knew he was getting a star. Still cool to include Paul tho, I agree.
THANK YOU! I was going to point him out since his name hadn't come up (yet). Love his voice & still have 1 Rough Cutt album & 1 CD. Dio, Halford & Shortino truly stand out here. And, yeah...Tate as well, but he was such a dick that (much like Malmsteen) it takes his talent down a notch. But yeah. Paul Shortino's voice. Awesome.
@Machu Pikachu Oh yeah.... totally forgot Wendy managed them!!! It makes sense they're included with the likes of bands who were much bigger & known worldwide. Rough Cutt deserved more, but it was fun while it lasted. Ah, the 80s....
@@imninjasmom total truth. Haha now you have me picturing Tate, Malmsteen and Carmine Appice in a band together. I wonder how long THAT would last...
@@machupikachu1085 hopefully long enough to find a bassist. Hmmmm......
I’m glad they used Nikki six’s bass line for this ..
Why wasn't EVH on this gig?
Larga vida al rock
I always ondered why the was no van halen, kiss, def leppard, no one from deep purple, rush, no one from black sabbath, apart from ronnie james dio, no scorpions, zz top ect. They all couldn't have been on tour.
Scheduling. I’m sure they reached out to tons of artists. Dio had beef with Sabbath so that wasn’t happening. Same with Purple because of Blackmore. Also, this was a “metal” project, and some artists were scared to be associated with heavy metal, so that might have had something to do with it. But the bottom line is, “hey, we’ve got the studio booked on these days. Can you make it?” Some could, some couldn’t.
Awesome solos Awesome song yngwie rules blackmore on speed just kiddin
HOW in the world did Rob Halfords part not make the finAL CUT? he WAS amazing
Being the working class Brit that he is, he didn't want to show off too much. He's class personified.
Classic project, just a big shame there were no females 🤘💀🤘
So many greats coulda been in these sessions: Ozzy, Lemmy, Van Halen, Metallica, AC/DC, Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, David Coverdale
Kevin DuBrow surprised!
Heavy Metal royalty!
Yngwie scared the other guitarists. He was the boss in those days.
Yeah, the boss. Assaulting girlfriends and smashing priceless Strats.
Unless EVH was there.
Ya then Lynch picked up the guitar
Yep. And i heard George Lynch saying that.
@@tonysimmons5729 yes.
Still Amazing after all these years. But I do still find it strange that Craig Goldy & Vivian Campbell were both there...
I almost forgot about that. Viv's replacement
Craig had not replaced him yet, he was in Guiffria at the time
He was originally in Rough Cutt, after Jake E Lee. All the Rough Cutt guys are there, as Wendy was managing them, and RJD was guiding them. Very 7 degrees of separation. Amir from Rough Cutt was one of two finalists for the Ozzy gig after Jake left. Zakk was the other. LOL.
80's glam metal was brutal!!
An editor's nightmare! 😱
this was all started with a jock and a mick...👍👍👍
Dio has the best voice, of all times. So powerful and magic. All other singers sound like little girls
Anyone know why Eddie Van Halen isn't part of this? It seems like he would have been one of the first guitarists called. Haven't seen anything regarding this.
Best part 23:37 trust me
Love to see this HAPPEN AGAIN?? ROCK ISN'T DEAD!! IT'S BEEN SURPRESSED???? It hasn't been done in DECADES??? THE WORLD HASN'T CHANGED IN FACT IT'S WORSE?? ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA????
I wonder why Eddie Van Halen was not involved with this project at that time
neither was Blackmore, Queen, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne.... etc.
@@roathripperyou're right. It never dawned on me until now but for some reason, I thought Bon Jovi was involved. Richie Sambora was a great guitarist too. It's possible that they were a part of ' we are the world' . I realized that a production like this, can't include everyone but they could have done " part 2", with the groups that weren't included the first time. As far as Van Halen, I thought I saw someone in the choir that looked like David Lee Roth but again I was mistaken.
I wish they would put out a Remixed Super Deluxe box set of this
Yes! I just said that. I could watch hours from this day. It really was incredible that all these guys showed up for this…amazing.
