Otay Mtn: Border Fire 58 06222024 (UPDATE)

INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 6-22-24 3:12 pm
LOCATION: Otay Mtn Wilderness Area
AREA/CITY: San Diego County
DETAILS:
An unknown cause of fire broke out on the mountain’s west side. At 4:50 p.m., the fire had burned approximately 100 acres and was 0% contained. Calfire firefighters and aircraft are battling the fire as it climbs the mountain.
Five helicopters, two fixed-wing prop planes, and two large jets were brought in. The Jets are from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. They have been dumping fire retardant along the west side of the fire to stop it from possibly heading toward the State Prison and County jails.
The terrain is rough, with steep uphills and deep canyons. No injuries have been reported at this time. There are several endangered species of plants and animals in the wilderness area.
UPDATE: The fire burned 138 acres.

Maybe, but we don't know yet. There are a gazillion ways people start fires. May not have been set by a human at all.
Inappropriately demonizing immigrants is worse than doing nothing at all, as it can mask or inhibit mitigation of other causes. Let the investigators do their jobs, feed the data up the chain; then hope the polies take appropriate, _informed_ action.

Luckily the lake is right at the foot of the mountains. The helicopters would dip down, scoop the water then climb and circle around to drop it. They are very proficient at this and have it down to a science

Great video Doug! I saw it from a little further away. Not to crazy about breathing in all that smoke & ash. Gonna be a long hot summer once July / August rolls around. Do you know if the FF helicopters get their water from the Otay reservoir?

The Skycrane’s make great drops. The US needs to manufacture new firefighting aircraft. The super scoopers are 40 years old. I know CalFire is outfitting C-130’s but there has to be something better.

Maybe a piece of glass from a beer bottle, busted decades ago and left behind, finally caught the sun just so.
Maybe someone discharged a firearm, the bullet struck a rock, and the resulting spark lit things off.
Maybe a wimpy immigrant, feeling cold in the 69F temps last night, lit a fire in hopes of rescue from hypothermia. Nah, that's just ridiculous. More likely that Russia's satellite death-ray laser lit up the country-side in retaliation for DJT's guilty verdict in NY!
