That made a great looking knife. Very nice to donate the sale as well. Full time smith is a 24 hour a day job. I'm retired but, I sure wish I had done it better and opened my own shop. I worked at making paper for the last 28 years. My Dad was a fulltime smith and advised me to get a job instead. I would've traded all that money for the time with him.

I watched this when it first came out but hadn't made any wrought san mai blades at that point. Am finishing forging one today, and this was a nice reminder of how it can be done. Thanks!

FYI 450°F is getting kinda close to the point where you start to see tempered martinsite embrittlement in some steels, you might want to do some testing with lower tempering temperures to see if you can get enough toughness at a lower temperature like 430°F.

That turned out really well. I find it kind of amazing the etched patterns you get from wrought. Awesome job John! Keep em coming. Oh and congrats on the change in full time careers.

Good for you. God Bless You. Our veterans deserve every chance they get. I just found your channel BTW. I watch John over at Black Bear Forge a lot. I remember you from Forge in Fire, I think. Well that was all over the place. Oh look, a squirrel.

Nice work Mr. John. Really nice recovery from the forging difficulties. Really a good testament to the smithy skills you've got. I'm glad you could share this, as I and others gained a valuable insight into how to recover over a difficult situation. Glad to see you able to help our Vets also. Alot of these folks need help and bureaucracy is slow and tedious.
    🙏 blessed days sirSir

Wrought iron from puddle oven is hard to weld on steel cause of the melting point difference.

Wow John! That's a "sharp" looking piece! I was wondering if the difference between the materials would be tangible when it came to drilling... Good to know that I was thinking on the right track. Congratulations on the busyness of the business! I'm so happy for you my friend!

SanMai is a bitch, and yes I've ground out thick spots on one side and then went back to the forge to get it straight again. Keeping that core centered is a real pain in the ass! Good stuff, great video as always. Good luck going full time!
