Baku doesn't have a balance, at least from my perspective. Turns out his move to Aston Martin was an inspired one.
Yeah, I second that. People say that McLaren lost 4th to Alpine because of DR, but I disagree. The McLaren was quite slow by the end of the season and in the races I always saw the Alpines having a pace advantage over the McLarens.

To be fair to Mike, he had nothing to do with the car as Technical Director. When James Allison was still Technical Director in 2019 he came on Beyond the Grid and talked about how he doesn’t actually have any role as a car designer in that position, his job is just to manage people and resource.
This was like the inverse of what happened at Jedda with Piastri not having a big enough gain with drs to get the overtake done on Hamilton becuase Merc ran monza spec wing
This is quite wrong actually. In Jeddah merc was only fast in slow corners. Lewis himself was 0.6 seconds slower than Max in high speed corners. Mclaren also was faster than Mercedes on the straights. The reason Lewis was holding Piastri back is all the last corner. Lewis always gained on Piastri at the final corn e which leads to the long straight. (If you can’t remember the corner is the one where Max crashed). Piastri would gain a lot on Lewis right until the corner entry (bc of the drs- where Max and Charles played drs Chicken) and Lewis would gain up to 3 tenths on that corner only leaving Piastri with a lot of work to do.
Fun fact, the Alpine was quickest at Baku 2023 free practice. Wouldn't have been interesting if Ocon didn't encounter a safety car incident because he had to drive as long as possible with the Hard compound, before changing to Soft before the last lap and the incident with the FIA photographers standing on pits.
I'm not so sure if the top speed on the straights during qualifying is a good indicator for how slippery the rear wing is, since all those top speeds were achieved with the rear wing open in a DRS zone.
It does, Lewis was always gaining time through the corner exit but he starts to bleed time after just a few meters of straight. That Alpine just goes hard while the Merc is busy bouncing itself into the shadow realm.
@@ALPHABYTE94 I think they just have a very aerodynamically efficient car, I don't see how they can make their car quicker in a straight line without getting caught. ferrari's mega engine got banned and the fia learned to look out for that and they cant modify their engine to make it more powerful
Their biggest issue in 2022 was aerodynamic drag, especially from the wings because they had to neuter the floor to stop the porpoising. This year they are not bad on the straights but they lack downforce, which is an even worse problem. And this stems from how difficult the setup window is for this car concept. At certain tracks they have to run very aggressive wing camber to be somewhat competitive in the corners, but at the cost of top speed. Then if they trim the wings they have a competitive top speed but they suck ass in the corners.
