Pea I wanted you to know what I wrote as a comment to your video with the young ladies from the provinces that you posted 8 months ago. -
In the Bible it talks about the woman being the weaker vessel. For thousands of years that passage has been used to subjugate women. What it actually means though is quite different. Imagine a 3lb metal coffee can and a pure crystal champagne flute. The man is the coffee can, you can put nuts and bolts in it or dirt or oil all sorts of dirty nasty things. When you need it for something else you dump it out and use it for whatever. The woman is the crystal champagne flute which you only put the finest of champagne in. When you finish the champagne you don’t toss it in the dishwasher either. You carefully wash it by hand and then with a clean towel you carefully dry it until it is spotless and sparkles ✨. Then you carefully put it on a high shelf behind a door with a glass front. It’s kept there so nobody but you can touch it and it’s behind the glass fronted door so others can see it but not touch it. The coffee can is used for all the dirty day to day stuff because it can handle it and yes it may get a little beat up or dented here and there but it will continue to do it’s job and function as it always has. The crystal flute is only for the finest things in life and is treated as the most special and valuable thing in your kitchen and your world. It’s not for the day to day grime and dirt of life. That is the true meaning of that passage. I used to teach a class for young men preparing for marriage and that passage as well as Ephesians chapter 5 is what I used the most.
Think about what I wrote, men and apply it to your life. This woman that you call wife who loves you and cares for you, who is going to give you children. This woman who will care for your children and be with you through all of what life is going to throw at you. Do you want her to be your “helpmate” or as a resentful adversary? It’s actually up to you which one she becomes and you would do well to remember that.
      Cheers

I learned the best way to shop in Thailand by accident. I had a Thai female friend with me and the vendors hated her. The vendors would tell me a price and my friend would loose her mind and they would begin arguing. She ALWAYS got the prices lowered for me. It shocked me the first time then it made me laugh after that.

Regarding your question; the Philippines is much easier when it comes to visa matters. For the past 20 years, the rules and regulations have changed at least once per year in Thailand, which can be very annoying. The easiest solution in Thailand is to get an ELITE-visa, which lasts for 10-20 years - and costs 1-2 million Baht...

As a German who is married to a Philippina (since 50 years now!) I love the content of your
videos. A couple of years ago my wife, my sister in law an her son booked a trip to Thailand.
There were good traffic rules in the city of Bangkok. I asked my Philippino nephew if
these rules would work in Manila too. He said „ yes uncle for about 20 seconds“
His way to analyze things tells a lot of the philippino mentality.
Philippino people got a lot of humor and they are able to joke about their flaws.
Not many Asian people are like this!

Hi, I just spent 3 weeks in Thailand about the same time you did Pea. I haven't visited the Philippines yet, possibly my next trip in December. My observation of Thailand is very similar to yours. The country is almost as clean as here in the U.S.. My biggest surprise was that I didn't get sick. I have a weaker stomach and I usually would have a few days on every trip stuck next to the toilet. I ate everywhere and drank everything. I enjoyed eating in the street food stalls the most and I tried numerous of them.
I rented a scooter and roamed Phuket and Chiang Mai. It was extremely fun and most importantly it was safe (I traveled solo). I am a new biker, I never rode more than a few blocks before this. The rode condition was very well kept and I rarely find potholes. Even a beginner biker with almost no experience can safely explore Thailand's back country.
The things that stood out was the honesty. Everybody leaves their motorcycle helmet on the bike unguarded and unsecured. There were a few incidents where I left the keys in the ignition and nothing happened. I would buy stuff and hang them on the scooter on the street and it never got stolen. I actually overpaid a few times and the sellers would correct me. One incident that amazed me the most was when I was in Bangkok, the hotel accidentally overcharged me. The hotel messaged me numerous times but I was already on a plane. The manager got his personal friend in Phuket to drop off the money at my next hotel. I didn't even notice that I was overcharged. The honesty of the Thai people is beyond anything I ever experienced.
I look forward to comparing Thailand to the Philippines soon.

This article is a real petition and article from a Filipino that sees various problems which is more than Thailand in almost every aspect. And knowledgeable and educated people accept these things. But there are still some Filipinos who are still deaf and blind who cannot see the problems of their own country. But trying to cheer for their own country in the wrong way. The more people come out to support the wrong and random things, the bigger it will go causing the country to lack sustainable development. While Thailand has developed very far We can barely keep up. From modern, large airports, infrastructure systems in every province, the country is clean. People with knowledge and education.
Here are the Philippine problems that prevent foreign tourists from coming to our country:
      1. We do not have a modern infrastructure like Thailand.
      2. We do not have modern transportation, Subways, High-speed trains. Double track, Railway system Monorail
      3. The internet is weak or non-existent.
      4. Power outage (power outage)
      5. The water is weak or lacking or there is no water.
      6. Robbery at NAIA Airport
      7. Accommodation is very expensive.
      8. There are many pickpockets, snatchers, and criminals in the Philippines. At the mall there must be soldiers everywhere with guns.
      9. There are a lot of illegal taxi and tricycle drivers. Extorting money from locals and tourists Overcharging/defrauding foreign tourists
      10. Garbage or rubbish on roads and sidewalks Including in many rivers and canals.
      11. Even on beaches, seas, forests, and mountains, there is garbage..plastic bottles, plastic bags, wrapping paper, and other garbage.
      12. Vendors sell illegal goods on the street/sidewalk. There were merchants in the middle of Badian Valley. San Sai Panglao and the banks of the seas of El Nido and Coron. Dirty and there is a lot of garbage in our environment and nature. Shop in the right place.
      13. Smugglers, street people, and beggars everywhere. especially children that asks for money from foreigners
      14. Our medical and public health systems still lag behind when compared to Thailand.
Then we say "It's more fun or better in the Philippines" ??? It is very embarrassing! Tourism stimulates our local economy as foreigners spend money in our country which helps our local businesses earn more money. Local and national governments must take some steps to address these issues. I want to see Thailand as a good example of development.

Have just seen your Philippines/Thailand comparison video. For someone who is only an occasional visitor, your assessment was excellent. I have lived in Chiang Mai for 15 years and before that was an occasional visitor (from Australia) for 25 years. Thailand is an extremely refined and ultra civilized country. Whereas (to generalise) they may not be particularly deep thinkers, traditional Buddhist civilization over many centuries gives Thais an almost instinctive and cultured philosophical attitude to life. This phenomenon is the same for Thais who happen to be Christian or Muslim. In all my years living here and visiting, have never once seen an instance of road rage, or even people raising their voices after being involved in a road accident. However as you imply, life can be lonely in Thailand if you don't speak the language. And even if a farang does speak Thai, the cultural barrier is immense, despite goodwill on both sides. Interestingly enough, I have found Filipinos who live here to be among the best Thai language speakers, running a close second to the Chinese. I have not been to the Phillipines for more then 30 years. I visited twice in my late 30's and unfortunately was mugged at gunpoint in Manila on the 2nd occasion. Consequently I gained a prejudice and have never been back. However time changes everything, including feelings and perceptions. So in early 2023 am going to give the country another try. Will avoid Manila completely, and change flights for Davao City without leaving the airport. I also want to look at Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete. The first time I visited I also went to Cebu City, which I liked, but no doubt it is greatly changed. Anyway, much as I love Thailand, perhaps it is time for me to change countries. Filipino people are definitely easier for a Western foreigner to interact with. As to why I don't return to Australia, which is really a great place to live: essentially it is a country for young people who are trying to save money or build a career. It is also horrendously expensive, although wages are also very high. In addition, although retired people there who are solvent have a physically comfortable life with all amenities, you always get the sense of being irrelevant. ie count your blessings, stay out of sight, and keep quiet. One advantage of Thai culture is respect for the older generation, and I believe the same applies in the Philippines. Thanks for the video. You are not a Pea, you are a Gem!

I lived in the Philippines for a couple of years with a wonderful nurse I met in Doha, Qatar where we both worked. Decades earlier I was in the Navy my first foreign country was the Philippines and passed through a few times, but did not have much time to get to know the real Philippines. However, I have visited Thailand numerous times for several years, mostly down in the southern islands of Ko Phuket and Ko Samui for a couple of weeks at a time. Also Bangkok a few times to use the top notch medical hospitals for LASIK and a total knee replacement. I agree the language barrier is more in Thailand as most Filipinos I knew, male & female, spoke English very well and my nurse girlfriend spoke really good. Anyway, I was introduced to a former high school teacher and now businesswoman in Thailand via a mutual Thai friend and after Facebook messaging for over a year when I was back in the US, we finally had time to meet up in person. Long story shorter, she was different and more independent than either Filipino or Thai women I have met in the past and we hit it off and we are still together living in Thailand after more that 3 years. She is the youngest and most successful in her family and supports her parents and told me not to worry about me needing to support them up in the Northern province. We met in Bangkok and she surprised me the first day picking me up with her own car as most Thai women do not drive cars. I love both countries and the women are very pretty and feminine and let a man be a man which is a big relief after being married to an American woman for too long. Anyway love watching your videos.

I spent 3 months in Thailand and 1 month in Palawan and a week in Manila.
I am currently wrestling with this very issue, where to retire in SE Asia, but Thailand edges it for me.
    Accommodation
I would challenge you on this one Pea. IMO like-for-like quality long-term leased accommodation is far cheaper in Thailand this forms a core to your living costs. In Palawan, the big issue is good standard rental accommodation was scarce or expensive. Loose comparables would be twice the price in Palawan, compared to Rayong or Hua Hin, and three to four times that of northern Thailand. In northern Thailand, I rented a 160sqm air-conditioned house for 6000 PHP, 4000THB, £90 or $110 a month. For those wishing to buy a home, Thailand also has many high-quality condominiums and housing developments available for foreign ownership, the developers have already set up lease land arrangements. To my knowledge, Palawan developments do not, in almost every case need to make you own arrangements for land leasing and building property around the existing laws. Oh there are a few condo developments on the outskirts of Puerto but they start at 5m PHP for a min studio, ridiculous vs build cost and comparables for 2.3m PHP in Thailand.
    Language
In Manila much better, but I found the general standard of English comprehension (not the ability to speak English) very poor across shops, hotels, and Malls. Ask a question and wait for the deer in the headlights' response. Example: Me "I would like a large Coke Zero please", Server "We do not have any Po" Me "What other drinks with no sugar do you have?" Server "We have Coke, Fanta, Sprite......" Me: But those all contain sugar, what sugar-free drinks do you have?" Server: Deer in Highlights look, no response. Me: So do you sell water? and so on. I found it frustrating.
I would rather have an expectation staff do not speak English and prepare to speak in their Language or in the case of restaurants ask in Thai for the food or an English menu.
    Manners
I also found queue-jumping Filipinos irritating. A number of times I was stood queuing to be sat in a restaurant or waiting to be served at a pharmacy, shop, or restaurant, Yet many male younger Filipinos (20-40) would walk in, pass me like I was invisible and go and get served. Never experienced that once in Thailand, even with the language barrier, they would always ask.
    Food
The fish is good in both countries was great, but it's accepted that Filipino food is bland compared to Thai. It is also often laced with sugar when it isn't needed. Goods and foods are readily available and plentiful in Thailand.
Interesting Im going to give the Philippines another go for longer before I give up, maybe I was missing something

You are right - those are the two areas where the Philippines beats Thailand ... and I will add one more: the Philippines is more affordable. Now where is Thailand superior? Thailand is a little more developed and it is a wealthier country. - it has been better hospitals, roads, infrastructure, there is less poverty. Thailand is a more liberal country - just ask anyone in the LGBT+ community. But Thailand was never colonized nor ruled by a western power, Philippines was a colony of both Spain and the US. The Thais are very proud.

I got interested in Asian culture when I was a kid having a Cantonese friend whose father was the head chef in the only Asian restaurant in town. I learned a lot of their culture growing up (and this was during the Vietnamese American war) and living in a west Texas oil town (Midland) I became well aware of the effects of what suppression brings about in Asian families. Move forward several years, I move through two larger cities, Houston and El Paso, then joined the Navy, and traved through the Pacific and Indian Oceans visiting countries along the way. Thailand was a neat and exciting country and appeared to have retained more of its original culture and ways, also because they had not to submit to western or Eastern rule to the point that it really impacted the people of the land, changing the beliefs and social norms of the people. One very important part of Thailand is their faiths, especially Buddhism, that many Westerners are totally unfamiliar with, and can confuse and "overshadow" their experience in Thailand. Thailand is still a beautiful country with many, many unforgettable experiences for the traveler.
The Philippines is a different experience, one that left a tremendous mark in my heart, because of the fact that it has been westernized a bit because of being subjugate to Spanish rule for 300 years that converted a majority of the country to Catholicism, the incursion and take over by the Japanese in WWII, and rescue by the Americans, by the efforts of General MacArthur during the world war,, that really changed the Philippines, to be topped off with the fanatical rulership of Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Emelda, that permanently changed almost all of the Philippines.
I think it is so important to learn some of a country's history and political history to start seeing insight into the people who are native to the lands. Religious beliefs should also be a strong priority especially if the beliefs are different than your own. Learning these pillars of understanding along with the foundations of the culture of the people themselves, you can make a visit to a different place a unbelievable experience!

I have never been to either country but have done some research and watched a ton of vids my conclusion is that they are two very different countries - Philippines is more Americanized and easier for an American to retire to the people are nice but the food is not great, good Hospitals in the cities, but definitely your experiencing the island life which is everything is slow - On the other hand Thai is very Asian and definitely more geared for foreigners who are looking for that and can live outside there comfort zones. They have some of the best food in the World, and they have Great Hospitals, and a better infrastructure, people though not near as friendly as Philippines - Now as I said I have never been to these countries this is just my personal thoughts from watching shows on CZcams - I do plan on visiting both countries in the very near future as I have lived in other countries and laugh at those articles that say "Best Place To Retire" I am like have you ever visited my country...lol ..

Just so you know, it is better to find your place through different methods than hiring an agent for a search for accommodations. Their salary is one month's rent so they are not motivated to show the good deals. As far as restaurants go, there are scads of great Thai restaurants where wonderful meals can be had for as little as 5-10 USD. I notice you passed on mentioning a qualitative review of the cuisines. Having resided in both places I have to vote for Thailand. No disrespect to the Philippines or Filipinos. I love both countries, the cultures, and people. The reason why I say The Kingdom is due to a more clean an d organized society. I say the word DISCIPLINE which in my humble Western opinion and attitude is lacking in your country. This is no reflection in you or your countrymen. I've learn so much about myself living in the Philippines. I choose Thailand because of the clean hospitals as I'm growing older and will need quality health care. I've been to so-called the TOP hospitals in your country in Mindanao, Cebu, and Luzon. It's was scary what I observed. Some will say I'm being "racist" or "anti-Filipino." Far from that. Secondly, the food in Thailand makes my taste buds orgasim. Thirdly, I'm a beach/ocean guy. The fishing, scuba diving, and beach crawls in Thailand are the best!

  • @shitou75
    @shitou75 Před 2 lety +10

I'm going to give a perhaps non-consensus opinion on the difficulty of becoming practically functional or even fluent in Thai vs. Tagalog or Visayan for a western native English speaker such as myself. I find Thai to be much easier to pick up than Tagalog because the words are much shorter, and there is minimal grammar in Thai. The tones you find in Thai but not Filipino languages can be your friend or your foe. Let me explain.
Westerners are not used to applying a tone on each syllable to distinguish meaning. But once you get used to it, you start appreciating how simple sentences are. Thai has 5 tones. In your early days, you need to practice them a lot. But once you become very familiar with them and understand how each syllable needs to be produced with one of the five, you can learn how to produce and understand everyday phrases and sentences since they tend to be very succinct and don't involve changing verbs tenses, etc.
I struggle to remember long words with long strings of syllables. Tagalog has a lot of this, probably because tone choices cannot be used to add to the meaning of each sound. So for me, Tagalog is very difficult; after years, I still don't get it.
But another tonal language - Mandarin Chinese - was relatively easy for me to pick up because it's similar to Thai in that it has tones (4 for Mandarin), short words/phrases, and very little grammar.
So for those who assume Thai is impossible for a westerner to learn well, consider that this belief may be partially a myth, maybe due to the perceived mystery of the far east.
But if the humor bond is key the way it seems to be for Pea, well, that's something that would be extremely difficult for guys like us to learn in either Thai or Tagalog. But in the Philippines, many locals also know western/Anglo humor in English, thanks to their exposure to our movies and contact with Anglos. You just won't get this with most Thais.

Hi, I recently came back from a trip to Thailand. I was there about 2 months. Your experiences mirrored many of mine. I met a many nice people but communication was extremely difficult. App translators were little help. I visited the provinces of the north and communication plummeted from bad to zero. I also got a strong feeling of a barrier between myself and Thai people. They were always very polite....just somewhat distant.
The infrastructure in Hua Hin where I spent some of my time was very good. I did find the cost of living as compared to the USA was about 60 percent less, which was great. I generally ate my meals at street vendors as it was cost effective and the food was great! Once noticeable issue I had was that many of the Thai people I conversed with seemed to stereotype me as "The Rich Farang" and while untrue, it made me uncomfortable and on guard.
I would like to next visit the Philippines this year as a comparison. I hear many great things about your country and would like to experience it first hand. I am looking for a retirement home for at least 6 months out of each year. You country is on my list to explore. Thank you Pea for your videos, you do an excellent job and they are very informative. Both populations are friendly and accepting as long as you don’t act like an ass. Everyone wants a better life and wants a little of our money. Difference is that Thais are extremely provincial and have no desire to leave Thailand for the most part. Filipinos on the other hand , especially if you’re American have the immediate eyeball on the green card potential you show. Either way it will cost you money (as with any woman anywhere) but a lot less than a western marriage and subsequent divorce fiasco lol

A few points about language in Thailand. Except for the remote countryside you are going to pretty easily be able to meet your basic needs of day-to-day living here even if you don’t speak the language. There are expats living all over Thailand and particularly in the cities. There are expat groups everywhere where you can meet and speak English with people from all over the world. Women? There are Thai women that speak English either rudimentary or fluently but you have a much smaller pool to choose from within the general population. You just have to figure out how to find them. You won’t have woman coming up to you and speaking English the first day. When you do have a gf/wife she will speak English (because that is who you chose) and she will be a great help as a translator when needed. I’ve never met an expat couple in Thailand where the woman didn’t speak English. I’m not sure how a Filipina partner in Thailand helps you if neither of you speak Thai. Also, you won't being going to a government office to verify that she is not married. You will be aware daily though that the people around you are speaking another language and most of the signage is in a different alphabet. Learning a little Thai is possible for most people but there is no need to be fluent.

What a great unbiased summary Pea. I would say language really is the main obstacle for most foreigners to get to know Thais. English classes at school, for many Thais, are like medicine. So it’s no surprise if they would avoid having anything to do with it if not necessary. That’s why when the Thais know you are not local, only few will have the courage to start a conversation. But believe me, most Thais will try to treat foreigners as best as can in most situations. It’s been embedded in the belief system to take good care of your guests (sometimes even better than to their fellow Thais :).

Hi Pea, as someone who has been married to a Thai lady for 17 years, I'd think you have a very good understanding of Thailand and the system, better than most men casually travelling there. I agree that Thailand is a little more expensive place to reside but has better infrastructure and quality of most services. The once thing that you didn't bring up is the concept of 'face' and saving face. It's huge for the Thais, they have a very hard time saying, 'I don't know' or 'sorry I was mistaken', to them, that can lead to a loss face. I'm not an expert on the PI, so I don't know if the PI has equivalent, but that combined with the language barrier can lead to some interesting situations for Thai/Western interactions. The other thing that really contrasts Thai and PI is each country's most prominent religion, with Buddhism in Thailand and Catholicism in the PI, both are great religions, but they shape a lot of each country's society. And is probably a topic best left alone.
Enjoyed the video and it looked like you enjoyed your trip. Thanks.

Pea thank you for this series and especially the (mostly) unbiased wrap up in this video. I am one of those considering either Thailand or PI. The lack of age gap relationships in Thailand is of no concern as I do not want a LAG relationship. The cleanliness, traffic (and following road rules plus driving on the correct side of the road) and infrastructure are all positves in Thailand but the language barrier is a big one. I could easily survive in PI but I am aware that even with Thailands advantages the language barrier will be a big one. One concern re PI is the changes that have been made to the SRRV by the new president and wondering what other changes may be coming that will deter foreigners living there. Thanks again for your wonderful comparison between these two retirement destinations. God Bless.

regarding age gap, if i was going to philippines i would choose a girl in her 20s. In thailand i would have no problem with a girl in her 40s (i'm in my 50s), because in thailand they really maintain their body and looks into older age. Not so much in the philippines. Regarding the language, thai is not as hard to learn as you might think. I've tried mandarin and vietnamese but i consider those languages virtually impossible to learn, at least for me. But i'm enjoying learning thai and i'm confident i will be reasonably fluent one day.

Everyone has different lifestyle tastes. Therefore, we dare not compare or suggest with little information or knowledge. It would be an insult to the intelligence of others or our guests.

Not to worry about comparison of our country to yours because the number alone of foreigners in Thailand speaks of how much better it is than the Philippines and also Filipina Pea spoke a lot of positives of Thailand. For the Philippines, it's usually just the English spoken in the Philippines and the wide age-gap being a thing in provinces in the Philippines and most of the rest goes to Thailand. At the end of the day, it is the foreigners' choice where to go.

My impression of both are exact opposites. The infrastructure is more advanced in Thailand with some really beautiful and affordable beachfront condos and... the nightlife is certainly a busy scene in Thailand. That being said, the Philippine women seem much more demure and beautiful. Plus it seems to me the Philippines has a much more structured moral code then Thailand, which I like. My knowledge of the Philippines is more centered around Dumaguete and Valencia. People seem way more down to earth as opposed to Manila or Cebu. Thailand improves every year, being cleaner with each year and with better infrastructure. It's a work in progress, of course, and Pea's comment about Philippines being a generation behind, is probably pretty accurate. Yes, the fact that there is a VA clinic in Manila is a HUGE factor to me (and other US military vets) looking at the Philippines for retirement. Also, with the US military reopening several bases in PI I'll have access to medical care there as well (and commissary and exchange access too).
I found the same thing to be true about Thai women: They look at you MUCH more analytically then I remember Filipina women do. Even if they choose you (I had a friend who married one) they are even more "stingy" with affection.
That clean thing is (I believe) from the Buddhist influence in the country. Most Buddhists I know are very conscious of cleanliness. They aren't afraid to get dirty, but when they can, they prefer to be clean. IT also might influence the "quiet" factor, as well as the lack of homeless and stray animals. Buddhists believe in taking care of those in need, and I suspect that carries over to animals (most Buddhists are vegetarian) and the homeless.

In the Philippines, every one moves slower, until they're in a vehicle, then speed is all that matters, everyone is polite and considerate, until in a vehicle. I thought about Thailand for a VERY short time, then You Tube recommended one of your videos and after watching it, Thailand was a distant memory and my sights turned to the Philippines. Glad you're back safe, and hope you enjoyed your vacation, even if it was a "working" vacation. Financial support should NOT be EXPECTED, it should be given because you WANT to, their parents chose to make their children and in doing so THEY CHOSE to take on all responsibilities for that child, including financial. Her family may ACT like they welcome you to the family, but I really don't think the foreigner is truly accepted as family, so why give away your hard EARNED money, relationships come and go for whatever reason, are they going to return any money you've given if things don't work out with their daughter, of course not, and I don't think a foreigner is going to ask for it either. As you pointed out in your video with the Province ladies, a wife's duties and responsibilities are to her HUSBAND, I still find it funny how quickly the ladies changed their mind about putting family 1st when you brought up what the Bible says. If you want to fix littering problems, give people more places to put their trash, more trash cans is what's needed, it would also add jobs because you need people to empty those trash cans.

I really like all your vids Ms. Pea, but this one was particularly good. You're honesty, ability to discern and relate the nuances, the subtle differences in the two cultures is very impressive. I think you are getting better and better at this, and how hard you work at it is really paying off, well done.
For me , the two salient points in this discourse are the language, and the innocent naivete aspects. I, like you, need to be able to relate to my partner in a deep and meaningful way, to get to know her needs, wants fears and desires. And to be able to talk about the complicated aspects of life, like why we're here, how the universe works, and the deeply complicated nature of relationships.
As for the innocent naivete thing - to me, that is something to be cherished and protected. The philopena who eventually chooses me will find that one can retain that friendliness, that trust and optimism; and still grow to be worldly and cognizant about how life works. She just needs to be nurtured, encouraged, protected, and valued as a person, and she will grow and still not lose that innocent child within her.
You have related (in past vids) that I will still face hurdles with my philopena partner, such as jealousy, insecurity, perhaps lack of motivation and drive, and difficulty in communicating, sharing deeply of herself, whereas Thai women might be more wordily, mature, emotionally stable and realistic.
Well, for me, I'll take that innocent, screwed up philopena, every time. If I do my job right as a partner, in a couple of years she will come to trust me, to trust in and value herself, and will flower into a healthy, vibrant, and dedicated lifelong partner.

Hello Pea. You did a nice job of understanding the barriers that foreigners run into when it comes to doing anything in Thailand. The language issues were number one for me when I lived there, and it's probably why I always saw my foreign friends hook up with a Thai woman very quickly once they arrived. Thai people are very warm and welcoming once you understand their culture and can speak some of their language. The foreign guys I saw who were successful learned to speak at least basic Thai if they wanted to achieve basic tasks (transportation and ordering food mostly). Anything beyond that required a better command of Thai or the intervention of a native Thai person. Yes, you're right on the money when it comes to the awful translation software. Even Google is pitiful at best. (edited). Most doctors and some dentists can speak basic English, at least enough to get you some medical care. Great video as always! Edit: The Tuk-Tuk drivers involved in the jewelry scams are working with the Thai mafia. Scary stuff that can end badly. Best to avoid those and only take a Tuk-Tuk if you know that person. As far as discounts go, the Thai people consider it a game. If you can play the game "Oh that is such a beautiful scarf. I would love to pay the asking price for it, but if I did so, my husband would never speak to me again. Is there some way I can pay you a little less money and also save my marriage?" It's said with a joke and from a light heart. They know your husband wouldn't divorce you over 10 Baht (30 cents or so), and they appreciate that you understand the culture and the spirit of bargaining. I've travelled a lot in Thailand and I do find the food prices there a lot cheaper than in the Philippines. I was shocked to see that some of the food items were the same as here in Sweden. If you eat where the locals eat in Thailand it is dirt cheap. I paid, on my last trip no more than $3 a meal.

Hi Pea, Thousands of Filipinos live in Thailand. My Filipina wife and I do actually live in Thailand and we both love it. Nicer, more friendly people in Thailand I'd say. So very much cleaner and well maintained. The fiber connection in my unit is about 7 times faster for one about 25% the cost of Philippines. I would never retire in Philippines or Thailand. Both places are just wrong for that (for me). You are right. There is no better country. But there is a cleaner choice. You cannot compare condo prices with Philippines because of the vast difference in quality. Anyways, just my 2 cents worth. If Philippines works best for you - that's what you should do. BTW: our "helper" is also from the Philippines. Just our preference.

I think it would’ve been fascinating. She may have been TNT, I really do not know. But I do not believe it would be terribly difficult to bring in a helper under a work visa. My attorney in Thailand works magic. But, he is not exactly cheap.

I lived two years in the Philippines on the island of Siquijor and two years in Thailand. You can live cheaply in both countries, but in Thailand you will get a much better standard for the same money. Many people are able to find interesting houses or apartments in the Philippines at a reasonable price. It is definitely easier to find in Thailand. What distinguishes the Philippines versus Thailand is mainly the immigrants. In Thailand there are many young people 20-30-40 years old who emigrate with their families from foreign countries and live in Thailand as expats. There are very few young people in the Philippines and the vast majority of expats are 60+. However, this does not mean that there are only older people in the Philippines. I myself have several friends who are my age i.e. 30 years old. After living in the Philippines and Thailand for two years, I can definitely say in which country I lived better and what are the pros and cons. I have a Filipina girlfriend and it was very difficult to get her to go abroad. It is not impossible but you always have to expect that she will get an offload. However, the problem is not immigration. The biggest problem is that Filipina women are often poor by choice. Even if they get the chance to go to a better country, they will still miss all the Filipino culture. The Philippines is a country where everyone gossips about someone else. This is especially evident in the small provinces.
I noticed that many people write that Thailand is a fake smile, etc. You are fools if you think that every Filipino loves foreigners. Most adore because we just have the cash. I'm not saying that every Filipina is a gold digger because that's not the case, but the questions "what do you do for a living?" "where do you work?" are probably not without reason. Once you get a Filipina out of poverty count on the fact that her family will be jealous and your monthly expenses will grow because once you run out of food, once someone is sick and it goes on and on. Of course, in that case, don't agree to send money. I am sending 7,000 pesos for a "Filipino family" and only because her sisters are going to college.
Filipinas and Thais are nice women but finding one who will honestly love you is very difficult. My girlfriend's sister personally doesn't hate foreigners, and in the case where I did a test for them and pretended that I didn't have 7,000 pesos for the month when I was in Thailand, my sister called my girlfriend and said "TELL ME TO BUY YOU A TICKET AND RETURN" So they don't really love us that much anyway. Well, but let's get back to the specifics of why I think Thailand is better, even though there are many great places, mountains, beaches, etc. in the Philippines.
Above all, Thailand gives me a sense of freedom, because I know I can always find an apartment for the price I'm looking for wherever I go. Here in the Philippines if you look on AIRBNB some people are wishing for 20,000 pesos for some bungalow or other messy rooms. In Thailand for that much you rent a condo with a swimming pool gym and sauna. Many people say there is no language barrier in the Philippines. THIS IS THE BIGGEST NONSENSE. Of course, the official language is English and all company paperwork is in this language, but the bureaucracy that prevails in this country is a deterrent in starting any business. Most people speak English, but only basic English. Older people don't speak English at all, or they break like in Thailand. Younger people in the Philippines speak English More and more Thais are starting to speak English, and I think that will eventually change in Thailand.
My dream was to go to Boracay, but after seeing the prices I just gave up. Therefore, Thailand in terms of opportunities with me definitely wins. I don't want to judge Thai women because I never had a relationship with a Thai woman, but my friends who have Thai wives definitely praise them. The problem in the Philippines is that if you're going to have a girlfriend from an island, they're usually such simple people that you're going to have a hard time getting that girl anywhere abroad.
In conclusion, for me Thailand definitely wins and I will list in points why.
    1. better infrastructure (cheap housing prices even 2 times lower than in the Philippines).
    2. better food (in the Philippines they put out lids with food first thing in the morning and no one heats it up, are they lazy enough?)
    3. safety (Thailand is definitely safer than the Philippines and has less crime)
    4. lack of Brownouts (I used to think it was just a problem for small islands, but even in dumaguete they have problems with lack of electricity. In a normal country they would do it in two years and the problem would be gone.
    5. More stable government (There is incredible corruption in the Philippines which means that if you pay, you get everything faster, etc.
    6. more interesting places (bankgok is beautiful, of course not everyone will like it, but then I would recommend going to manila where kids are out in the streets gluing themselves to the glass just to give you a few pennies)
    7. more interesting culture (apart from the old churches in the Philippines there is nothing else to see)
    8. and the most important point. HEALTH CARE. Honestly, I don't know how people over 60 can live in a country that won't even take care of your safety. There are no good hospitals in the small islands, the closest one to any reasonable hospital is on cebu (4 hours away by ferry). Count on the fact that if you don't have cash in the Philippines, no one will even touch you with a finger and lifesaving without money in the Philippines simply doesn't exist. In Thailand, health care is at a very high level.
All this makes me choose Thailand and not the Philippines. Unfortunately, I need many other things besides beautiful beaches, and I gave the Philippines a chance several times. I was disappointed once again and decided that Thailand is the place for me.

I find it very refreshing to hear a Filipina recognize that things are done more efficiently or better than in the Philippines, in other countries besides the USA. You seemed to be very honest in your comparisons and I found the vlog very informative. I think if English was widely spoken in Thailand, they would take away much of the tourism and expats living there, from the Philippines. The biggest attraction of the Philippines over the other countries is the wide use of English.

Hi Pea, thanks for your observations, I'm sure I mentioned a couple of the things you said before you went 🙂 The language is certainly one of the negatives for Thailand however I wouldn't see that as too huge a barrier as if I moved there I'd want to learn the language, in the Philippines I'd be looking to learn some of the local language there as well.
I think the 2 main point that suggest the Philippines may be the better location for me relate to visa and pensions. The visa situation is much better for long term stay in the Philippines as Thailand is only looking to make it easier for you to retire there if you're rich as they're clearly after your money. Since the main part of my retirement fund will be from my social security that also points to the Philippines as the better choice - the UK government freeze your state pension at the amount when you claim it if you are living abroad, there are a few countries that are exceptions to this rule and still allow you the annual increases in the amount - the Philippines is one of these countries however Thailand is not.
I'm looking forward to finally being able to make it to the Philippines towards the end of this year so that I can see things there for myself. It's fantastic to be able to follow a channel like yours and get a great deal of useful info however it's important to get a feel of a place for yourself too.

Well said Andrew. The pension freeze is something many Brits don't even know or think of, until its too late & they're already settled in Thailand.
A way around it, but probably not permanent is keep a UK property/address, as if living in the UK. Have your pension paid as normal into your UK bank & transfer into a Thai bank or cash machine withdrawal.
Not sure how long an individual would get away with it, but it seems its what some British expats in Thailand do.

The retirement visa/extensions are similar in cost to the Philippines SRRV. What Thailand doesn’t have is the ability to stay 3 years in the country on tourist visas/extensions. They consider tourists to be tourists and not long stay expats.

The other thing you will notice is if you stay quiet like a thai they will assume you are thai, my wife was not charged a skin tax like I was at a couple places. Sorry to say you are wrong about VA services for Americans in the Philippines. The only ones that qualify are veterans with service connected disabilities. I am retired Military with no disabilities either service connected or otherwise so VA will not provide any services to me.
