    Step 3 - "work with someone" has had the biggest impact on my productivity. Have you tried that?

      Great idea! I have for bigger tasks that involve lots of collaboration, but I haven’t tried it for smaller tasks.
      I work with people over Teams a lot. I’m going to try this for smaller tasks by sending an “Accountability message” to a colleague who is loosely aligned with the task (e.g. engineer for a feature I’m writing document for) to say I’m starting on a task and then send them a follow up message 25 minutes later to update them on the progress: finished, more work needed, etc.

      In programming the version of that is Pair Programming where only one person can touch the work and the other talk. So can share learning and also talking more than acting often solves things quicker

    If I’m procrastinating on deep work, I do something I call Game Time.
    4 quarters of work, roughly 1 hour each. 5 min planning + 45 min working + 10 min review.
    Planning is writing down smaller tasks that add up to 45 minutes, the first of which is a very easy low-friction “kick off” task to get started.
    Working is timed using a playlist. 45 minutes of music + 5 minutes of silence track + applause track. The 5 minutes of silence helps me come to a natural stopping point, noticing the music stopped. The applause gets my attention if I don’t notice the music stopped, and celebrates I got a little extra work done.
    Reviewing is writing down what went well, what didn’t go well, what I need to focus on next. The extra time is used to take a break and move around.
    Each quarter gets scored, with a total score for today’s game. Sometimes I only get one quarter in, sometimes all 4, it just depends on what’s doing on, but I force myself to get at least one done.

    1. Define the task. Break it down to small chunk.
    2. Set a timer. Work or study for 30 mins. Write a task list. 25 mins on and 5 mins off.
    3. Do it with somebody else. Ex. Study group.
    4. Keep score as "men keep points." How many tasks did you do? Celebrate your milestones.
    Thanks for the info!

  • @JesseHelton
    @JesseHelton Před měsícem +24

    For my work:
    - I start with a mental blob of “I need to do X”
    - I write down “X” on a piece of paper
    - Under “X”, I write a list of what that means
    - Once an item on the list is a task that needs to get done, “Y”, then I create a separate list for “Y”
    Very quickly, I seem to get to a small and simple task that I can do right now.
    Sometimes, the task to do is to research something or try something in order to answer a question.
    Once I am done doing whatever that task is, I go back to the list. I either keep breaking down the list or I keep moving onto the next thing I already wrote down.
    In the end, I end up finishing whatever it was without really thinking about doing it or not doing it. I’m just like, “oh, I’m done. Cool!”
    Then, I move onto the next thing.
    In summary:
    1 - Write down what you need to do
    2 - Break it down further
    3 - When you get to an item that you “just have to do”, do it
    4 - go back to your list and repeat

    Hey, do you think that using a simple journal for all your work and education like taking notes is better than a system in notion or obsidian let's say. If it is can this be made in an app like notion and obsidian or it will get me distracted and I will want to make it more fancy and bs like that. If you don't mind, where do you recomend to save all of my notes and things i've taken as notes to be safe?

    • @jaydwilliams
      @jaydwilliams  Před měsícem +1

      I’ve always found it harder to use notion or obsidian because of the distractions. The big benefit of using them is it makes it easier to review notes later. I’ve tried both and I find that I’m more likely to take better notes and review them later if they are hand written. I’d try the hand written if you aren’t used to doing them, and I’d also try notion and see which one you like better

    I want to say something, as the only straight A student (at this stage), surrounded by mostly C-D students. I think that what I do is not good. That I prioritize grades too much, which means I have lack of relationships, for example. I feel like I make a mistake by being a nerd, studying things that actually will be pretty unuseful later in life. At the same time, it’s a challenge for me, I push myself to see what I can do, what is my maximum level. So, being with people that study less, I feel superior (which I’m not very proud about, because it is ego and so on, but it motivates me. I like being better than others). However, there are some people whom I want to show my effort, so they think or say that I’m brave. In conclusion, I like being better, but not being called a nerd.

      Adina, do you have any opportunities to surround yourself with others who are aiming for high grades? There’s a saying that a person is a reflection of the five people with whom they spend the most time.

    • @adina_bakery_
      @adina_bakery_ Před 18 dny

      @@username00009 it would be hard, but maybe I would find somebody. However, do I really need it? That is the question... Because people are happy without huge marks, people are happy without knowing calculus or physical chemistry. I wonder..
