Ren is giving chinchilla the freedom and space to be her own artist here, but I think that was also true in the last half of chalk outlines.

When you listen to it back knowing how it ends, it all takes on new meaning. It is about his friend, but it could also be about him.
"I've been talking to the dead" could either be a representation of his friend's mental health struggles, or it could be Ren talking to his lost friend.
"There are bruises on the walls" could be from his friend's perspective, but it could also be the trauma experienced by loved ones.
"My sins surround me" could be from his friend's perspective, but it could also be personal guilt at not being able to stop his friend from doing that - survivor's guilt.
I like to think it's intentionally written from both perspectives, because we all know Ren is extremely clever in his writing and it's definitely something he would do. It's very subtle, but it's so damn clever.
Either way it's an absolutely beautiful and tragic song.

I'm no expert on this guy as I've only just discovered him, but it seems his genius and talent soars higher with the help of a brilliant team of people around him from his cinematographer to the other musicians and all those that must help in the videos. Fuck Sony!

Same interpretation. I also interpret the first part of the song until Ren's final verse to be his friend in the lead up to this decision. The cry for got would then be a final desperate prayer and cry for help to which he did not hear an answer. Depression cuts you off from the divine, doesn't it? Even if it is still there, it cannot be felt. I love the way the song gives voice to both, the one giving up and the ones who have to live with the consequences.

Another enjoyable reaction. I read somewhere that Ren's best friend committed suicide. Ren even alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. Someone else stated that two of Ren's friends have committed suicide. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is still my favorite song, in part because I can very much relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago).

Between this and Chalk Outlines, my tears will always shed. It's also really grown on me how animated Chinchilla is on camera, and honestly her in both this and Chalk Outlines I feel like she could be best described as the source of light in a picture to Ren being the object of the picture.

I think Ren lost himself without his friend. Hence "I forgot how to be me." BTW his friend was talking about jumping off a bridge and then disappeared late that night. They assume he did jump. His body was never found.

The pain of losing a friend is something that never goes away. It’s been years now and I still cry at a simple thought of him. I still have videos on my phone of him just so I can hear his voice sometimes. This song hits a spot in my soul very few things can touch. It actually gave me the courage to post a song I wrote called Lessons. I write to help with my own issues and wasn’t planning on ever showing it to anyone but if I can touch a single person the way this song touches me, why wouldn’t I put it out there? Music can be so powerful and it’s a shame to think about how many masterpieces are out there sitting on someone’s computer never to be heard by anyone. I think Ren will inspire a huge wave of new artists to come out of hiding and finally share their words with the people!

Nice reaction, yes this song was about one of Ren's friends commit suicide, jumped from a bridge similar to the one they are recording their performance.
Chinchilla's themes on her songs are a bit different than Ren's, but her collaborations with Ren is a tip of her iceberg from a stand point of her vocal range and varieties she can perform. She is talented AF. I would really enjoy to watch you reacting to one of her solo live performances like "Vero Presents: Chinchilla - Fingers (live) for Hunger TV".

Check out Freckled Angels a song Ren wrote for his best friend he lost. Love his work with Liv Sangster, The Big Push, Sam Tompson and Trick the Fox. I cannot believe how versatile Ren is and he keeps good company! I have been happily lost, never to be found, down the Ren Rabbit hole! ❤️

With my heart issues & autoimmune disease you don't really get the long life a lot dream of but I look forward to a beautiful afterlife. @@TrevandErin I plan on being here for as long as the good Lord allows. Sadly my family was cursed with awful genetics. I am 42 now & already survived a major heart attack (doctor called it a widow maker since people typically don't survive those) at 37. Lost an uncle who had a widow maker heart attack & died at 33. Lost my mom at 59 & lost a few more due to the same thing. I'm not giving up on life, I just try to be realistic. But God is a Mighty God & He can allow me to live well into my 90's. Sorry, my comments are so lengthy at times...I am a talker & tend to share things people don't care to hear/read. My husband said I could talk the ears off of corn 😂 I just can't help myself 😁

Chinchilla is fantastic but she's not stealing the show. It's Ren's song, Ren's arrangement and he's providing the musical accompaniment, on guitar. His singing is incredible and he's deliberately singing in harmony for much of the song. Definitely not putting Chinchilla down, she's incredible, but if you think this performance is all about her, you're not watching and listening to the same performance. :)
